Our verdict
AJ Bell is the default recommendation for a UK investor who wants low charges but is not willing to accept a worse experience to get them. The percentage custody charge on shares is capped hard — GBP 42 a year in the Dealing account and ISA, GBP 120 in the SIPP — which means a large share and ETF portfolio costs a fraction of what it does at Hargreaves Lansdown, while GBP 1.50 fund dealing and free regular investing keep the running costs of a fund portfolio down too. The support operation is genuinely good, covering seven days a week by phone and live chat, and being FTSE 250 listed means audited, published financials that any client can inspect. The weaknesses are real but narrow. The custody charge on funds is 0.25% uncapped up to GBP 250,000, so a GBP 200,000 fund portfolio still pays GBP 500 a year where a flat-fee platform charges under GBP 100. The 0.75% entry tier on foreign exchange is high, and six markets — Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa — are phone-only with a GBP 10,000 minimum, which quietly makes AJ Bell an Anglo-American and European platform in practice. There are no options, futures, fractional shares, direct crypto or demo account. For a UK portfolio of shares, ETFs, investment trusts and funds inside an ISA or SIPP, it is very hard to fault.
Best for
- Cost-conscious UK investors
- Share and ETF portfolios in an ISA
- SIPP and drawdown savers
- Investment trust investors
- Investors who want low fees with real support
Less suitable for
- Large fund-only portfolios above GBP 150,000
- Frequent traders in Asian or Australian markets
- Derivatives and leveraged traders
- Anyone wanting fractional shares or direct crypto
Pros & cons
Pros
8- Custody charge on shares, ETFs and investment trusts capped at GBP 3.50 a month in the Dealing account and ISA, and GBP 10 a month in the SIPP — GBP 42 and GBP 120 a year respectively
- GBP 1.50 online fund dealing is among the cheapest on any UK platform, and regular monthly investing is free from GBP 25
- Share dealing at GBP 5.00, falling to GBP 3.50 in any month following one with 10 or more share deals
- Listed on the London Stock Exchange under AJB as a FTSE 250 constituent, with published audited accounts and FCA regulation
- Which? Recommended Provider for eight consecutive years, 2019 to 2026 — the only investment provider to achieve that run
- Seven-day customer support: phone 08:00–19:00 on weekdays and 10:00–14:00 at weekends, plus live chat and secure message
- Free transfers in and out, free withdrawals, free cash holding with interest paid, and no inactivity fee
- 24 international markets and a deep menu — over 4,000 funds, over 3,500 ETFs, over 400 investment trusts, bonds, gilts, ETCs and warrants
Cons
6- The 0.25% custody charge on funds is uncapped up to GBP 250,000, so a GBP 200,000 fund portfolio pays GBP 500 a year where a flat-fee platform charges under GBP 100
- Foreign exchange starts at 0.75% on the first GBP 10,000 of a trade, with a further 0.5% taken when overseas dividends are converted into sterling
- Six of the 24 international markets — Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa — are telephone-only with a GBP 10,000 minimum order, which effectively puts them out of reach for most retail portfolios
- No options, futures, spread betting, CFDs, direct crypto or fractional shares, and no demo account to test the platform first
- In-house research is thinner than Hargreaves Lansdown's: a favourite-funds list and Shares Magazine content rather than a full analyst desk with written coverage of individual holdings
- Sterling is the only cash currency, so a round trip in a US share crosses the FX spread twice with no way to hold dollars between trades

Full review: AJ Bell
This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.
Fees: what AJ Bell actually costs
AJ Bell's schedule is built around one idea: charge a percentage, then cap it hard on the things that can grow large.
Custody charge, billed monthly from available cash:
- Funds: 0.25% on the first GBP 250,000, 0.10% from GBP 250,000 to GBP 500,000, and nothing above GBP 500,000
- Shares, ETFs, investment trusts, bonds and gilts: 0.25% capped at GBP 3.50 a month in the Dealing account and Stocks and Shares ISA — GBP 42 a year — and capped at GBP 10 a month in the SIPP, GBP 120 a year
That cap is the headline. A GBP 300,000 portfolio of ETFs and investment trusts inside an ISA costs GBP 42 a year in custody. The same portfolio at a 0.35% uncapped-on-funds competitor would cost several hundred. It is also why the fund side is the weak spot: 0.25% uncapped to GBP 250,000 means a GBP 200,000 fund portfolio pays GBP 500 a year, and a flat-fee rival will beat that comfortably.
Dealing charges:
- Online share deals: GBP 5.00, or GBP 3.50 in any month following one in which you placed 10 or more share deals
- Online fund deals: GBP 1.50
- Regular monthly investing: free, from GBP 25 a month
- Telephone dealing: GBP 25
- Dividend reinvestment: GBP 1.50 per reinvestment
Foreign exchange is tiered on the sterling consideration after conversion: 0.75% on the first GBP 10,000, 0.50% on the next GBP 10,000, and 0.25% above GBP 20,000, with a separate 0.5% applied when overseas dividends or corporate action proceeds are converted into sterling. The tiering is more generous than Hargreaves Lansdown's 0.99% entry band but well behind a multi-currency broker.
What is free is a long list: account opening, transfers in, transfers out, withdrawals, holding cash (which earns interest), and drawdown withdrawals from the SIPP. There is no inactivity fee. Government levies — 0.5% UK stamp duty, the PTM levy, and overseas transaction taxes — are passed through at cost, and new issues carry 0.10% capped at GBP 25.
Safety and regulation
AJ Bell plc is a London Stock Exchange listed company trading under the ticker AJB and a constituent of the FTSE 250. That is the single most useful safety signal available on a retail platform: the group publishes audited annual and interim accounts, reports assets under administration and customer numbers every six months, and is scrutinised by equity analysts and institutional shareholders continuously. Anyone can read the balance sheet before opening an account.
The retail platform is operated through FCA-authorised subsidiaries of the group — principally AJ Bell Securities Limited (FCA firm reference 155593) for stockbroking and custody and AJ Bell Management Limited (firm reference 211468) for the pension and ISA wrappers — with the group's registered office at 4 Exchange Quay, Salford Quays, Manchester M5 3EE. Client money is held in segregated accounts under the FCA's client money rules and investments are held in nominee, ring-fenced from the firm's own assets.
Eligible clients are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to GBP 85,000 per person per firm. As always, this protects against firm failure or a shortfall in client assets. It does not protect against a fund or share falling in value, and it does not extend to the failure of an underlying fund manager.
The business has been operating since 1995, was founded in Manchester by Andy Bell and Nicholas Littlefair, floated in November 2018 at a valuation of around GBP 675 million, and now serves more than 762,000 customers with roughly 1,500 employees. There are no material regulatory enforcement actions against the retail platform that we have identified — an unusually clean record for a firm of this size and age, and one of the reasons the safety score sits above the sector average.
The Which? Recommended Provider designation, held for eight consecutive years from 2019 to 2026, is not a regulatory measure, but it does reflect sustained customer-survey performance on transparency and service that no other UK investment provider has matched.
Platform and mobile app
AJ Bell's design philosophy is the opposite of a trading terminal: get the job done, get out of the way, do not charge for features nobody uses.
The website handles everything — dealing, research, valuations, performance, contributions, transfers, tax reporting, and the full wrapper administration for the Dealing account, ISA, Lifetime ISA, Junior ISA and SIPP. It is quick, stable and unfussy. What it does not offer is depth: charting is basic, there are no advanced or conditional order types beyond limits and stops, there is no depth of book, no multi-monitor layout and no API. A day trader will find it inadequate; a long-term investor will find it entirely sufficient and easier to navigate than most rivals.
The mobile app is genuinely good. Biometric login, live prices, dealing across every account type including the SIPP, watchlists, valuations and contribution management are all there, with parity to the website close enough that most clients never open a desktop browser. It is one of the better-rated UK investing apps and a large part of why the mobile score sits above the platform score.
Dodl is a separate product rather than a simplified view: an app-first service aimed at first-time investors, with a deliberately short investment menu and its own low percentage charge. It shares the group's infrastructure and protections but is a distinct account with distinct pricing — worth knowing about if you are comparing "AJ Bell" prices you saw quoted somewhere else.
Investcentre is the adviser platform. If a financial adviser has put you on AJ Bell, you are on Investcentre, not the retail platform, and the charges are different.
The honest platform verdict: AJ Bell has built the least annoying execution-only platform in the UK. It wins no awards for innovation and needs none.
Markets and products
The investment menu is broad within a firm boundary: long-only, no derivatives.
What you can hold: over 4,000 funds, over 3,500 ETFs, over 400 investment trusts, UK shares from the main market and AIM, international shares, corporate and government bonds, UK gilts, exchange-traded commodities, and warrants and covered warrants. That is a wider fund and ETF selection than most UK competitors publish, and the investment trust coverage in particular is strong — a meaningful point for income investors, since trusts can smooth dividends in a way open-ended funds cannot.
International access covers 24 markets, including the United States, Canada, Japan, and the major European venues — France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland — plus Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.
The caveat matters more than the headline. Most European stocks are available online as CDIs, and US and Canadian dealing is straightforward online. But Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa are telephone-only and carry a GBP 10,000 minimum order. In practice that reduces AJ Bell's Asia-Pacific access to something only larger portfolios can use, and it should be read as a constraint rather than a feature when comparing the "24 markets" claim against a broker offering genuine online global routing.
What you cannot hold: exchange-traded options, futures, spread bets, CFDs, spot forex, direct cryptocurrency or fractional shares. There is no demo account. Commodity exposure runs through ETCs and funds only.
For a UK investor assembling an ISA or SIPP from funds, trusts, ETFs, gilts and developed-market shares, the coverage is complete. For anyone whose plan includes derivatives, Asian single stocks in modest size, or sub-GBP 100 positions in expensive US shares, it is not.
Account opening and funding
Opening is online, takes roughly ten to fifteen minutes, and needs a National Insurance number, UK address history and UK bank details. Identity checks are electronic in most cases and accounts are usually usable the same day. There is no headline minimum to open a Dealing account, though regular investing requires GBP 25 a month and the phone-only international markets carry a GBP 10,000 minimum order.
Eligibility is UK-resident. ISAs and Lifetime ISAs require UK tax residency by statute, and US persons are not accepted.
Funding is by debit card, which credits effectively instantly, or bank transfer and Direct Debit, typically same day to two business days. Direct Debit powers the free regular investing service, which is the cheapest way to build a position on the platform: no dealing charge at all, on funds or shares, from GBP 25 a month.
Withdrawals return to a nominated UK bank account in the client's own name, are free, and normally arrive within one to three business days. SIPP drawdown withdrawals are also free — not universal on UK pension platforms, several of which still charge per payment or per year in drawdown.
Transfers are free in both directions. Bringing an ISA or SIPP in costs nothing, and leaving costs nothing either, including in-specie transfers of holdings. Combined with the absence of an inactivity fee, that means an AJ Bell account left idle with a small cash balance costs effectively nothing to keep open — a genuinely useful property when you are testing a platform or consolidating gradually.
Cash is held in sterling only. Overseas trades convert at the point of dealing, so a buy-and-sell round trip in a US share crosses the FX spread twice with no option to park the dollars in between. For anyone trading international shares regularly, that is the cost line to model, not the GBP 5.00 commission.
Research and education
Research is the area where AJ Bell's low pricing is visible, and it is a fair trade rather than a failure.
Clients get fund and share factsheets, performance data, screening tools, consensus analyst data, dividend information and portfolio valuation tools free with the account. The group also owns AJ Bell Media, publisher of Shares magazine, which supplies a steady stream of UK-focused market commentary, company analysis and investment ideas — genuinely useful content produced by financial journalists rather than by a marketing team.
There is a curated favourite funds list for investors who do not want to screen 4,000 options themselves, along with ready-made portfolios for those who want the allocation decision made too. Both are competently constructed and openly presented as starting points.
What is missing relative to Hargreaves Lansdown is a dedicated in-house analyst desk producing written coverage of individual funds and FTSE companies. AJ Bell aggregates and curates; HL researches and writes. If your process depends on reading a platform's own view on a specific holding before you buy it, that gap is real. If you do your own work or follow external research, it is irrelevant — and you are saving hundreds of pounds a year for the privilege.
Education is solid and beginner-oriented: guides to ISAs, pensions, drawdown, tax allowances and getting started, plus regular podcasts and webinars. It is written plainly and does not read as a sales funnel. Dodl exists partly as the education answer — a simpler product for people who find the main platform's choice overwhelming.
The overall picture is a platform that gives you the tools and the data and expects you to bring the conviction.
Customer support
Support is the reason AJ Bell has kept the Which? Recommended Provider badge for eight straight years while running some of the lowest charges in the market, and it is the least appreciated part of the proposition.
The contact centre is UK-based and reachable on 03455 432 600, Monday to Friday 08:00–19:00 and at weekends 10:00–14:00. Weekend cover is unusual on a UK investment platform — most competitors close on Friday evening — and it matters for the people who actually do their financial admin at the weekend. There is also live web chat during business hours, secure messaging from inside the account, and a set of dedicated email addresses routed by task: new accounts, onboarding, transfers in, transfers out, contributions, withdrawals and cash applications.
That routing is more useful than it sounds. The slow, painful jobs on a UK platform are pension and ISA transfers, and having a dedicated queue for transfers in and another for transfers out means those cases do not sit behind general dealing enquiries.
Service is English-only and UK-only, which is a scope decision rather than a gap for a domestic platform. There is no 24/7 cover and no out-of-hours dealing desk — international phone-only markets in Asia-Pacific therefore have to be traded during UK office hours, which is an additional practical constraint on those six markets.
Public sentiment is consistently strong. AJ Bell scores near the top of the UK platform sector on the main review sites, with the recurring positive themes being value for money and responsiveness, and the recurring negative themes being occasional transfer delays and the fund custody charge on larger balances. That is a healthy complaint profile: the criticisms are about pricing structure and process timing, not about competence.
Frequently asked questions
Custody is 0.25% a year. On funds that is uncapped up to GBP 250,000 (then 0.10% to GBP 500,000, free above). On shares, ETFs and investment trusts it is capped at GBP 3.50 a month — GBP 42 a year. Dealing is GBP 5.00 per online share trade (GBP 3.50 if you placed 10 or more share deals last month), GBP 1.50 per fund trade, and free for regular monthly investing. A GBP 50,000 ETF portfolio with six trades a year costs about GBP 72 all in; the same money in funds costs GBP 125 in custody plus dealing.
Almost always. Custody is 0.25% against HL's 0.35%, and the cap on shares is GBP 3.50 a month in the Dealing account and ISA against GBP 12.50 at HL. Dealing is GBP 5.00 against GBP 6.95, and fund dealing is GBP 1.50 against GBP 1.95. On a GBP 100,000 fund portfolio the annual custody charge is GBP 250 at AJ Bell and GBP 350 at HL. HL only wins on research depth and app polish, not on price.
GBP 5.00 in commission (GBP 3.50 for frequent dealers) plus a tiered foreign exchange charge: 0.75% on the first GBP 10,000 of the sterling consideration, 0.50% on the next GBP 10,000, and 0.25% above GBP 20,000. Overseas dividends converted into sterling carry a separate 0.5% charge. Cash is held in sterling only, so a buy-and-sell round trip crosses the spread twice. On a GBP 3,000 US purchase the FX cost is about GBP 22.50 against GBP 5.00 of commission.
AJ Bell offers 24 international markets, but not all of them online. The US, Canada and the major European venues are available online, with most European stocks dealt as CDIs. Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa are telephone-only and carry a GBP 10,000 minimum order, which puts them out of reach for most retail position sizes. Treat AJ Bell as an online UK, US, Canadian and European platform with phone access to Asia-Pacific for larger orders.
No. Transfers in and out are free, including in-specie transfers of holdings to another platform. Withdrawals are free, holding cash is free and earns interest, and there is no inactivity fee. SIPP drawdown withdrawals are also free, which is not universal among UK pension platforms. The custody charge continues while you hold investments, so an account holding only a small cash balance costs effectively nothing to keep open.
No. AJ Bell is a long-only investment platform with no exchange-traded options, futures, spread betting, CFDs, spot forex, direct cryptocurrency or fractional shares, and no demo account. Commodity exposure is available only through exchange-traded commodities and funds. If derivatives or direct crypto are part of your plan, you will need a separate account with a broker that offers them.
