Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

Our verdict
Bitpanda has built the product a German or Austrian investor actually wants — crypto, real shares, ETFs, gold and a savings plan on one login, in German, with a Vienna-regulated entity behind it and an app rated 4.70 from 55,000 ratings. The tax question is where it separates from Coinbase and Kraken outright: Bitpanda states that for users based in Austria or Germany it manages tax handling on Real Securities in line with local rules, which for most investors means the Kapitalertragsteuer or Abgeltungsteuer is dealt with rather than left as a Steuererklärung problem. Neither Coinbase nor Kraken offers that, and neither sells real shares to EEA retail at all. The cost of this convenience is price and depth. The broker product's premium is opaque by design — Bitpanda names 0.99% for Bitcoin but concedes the per-trade fee ranges from 0.00% to 2.49%, and silver and platinum carry a 2.5% buy premium that a physical dealer would struggle to justify. Fusion fixes the crypto side with a published 0.25%-to-0.02% ladder and real charting, but it is a second product you have to know to switch on. And Bitpanda is privately held with no listing, no banking licence and no compensation scheme on the crypto side. Buy it for the DACH-native breadth and the tax handling; do not buy it expecting the cheapest execution.
Best for
- German and Austrian investors wanting crypto and shares in one place
- Investors who want tax handled automatically
- Beginners and savings-plan investors
- Precious metals buyers
- DACH mobile-first users
Less suitable for
- Cost-sensitive high-volume traders who stay on the standard product
- Derivatives, forex and options traders
- US residents, who cannot open an account
- Investors who need deep research and screening tools
Pros & cons
Pros
8- Tax on Real Securities is handled by Bitpanda for customers based in Austria and Germany — the single most valuable feature for a DACH investor
- Real share ownership: more than 7,500 stocks and 2,500 ETFs and ETCs at a fixed EUR 1 per trade, executed on the Quotrix exchange with dividends, splits and corporate actions passed through
- Four separate Austrian and German licences — MiCAR CASP with the FMA and with BaFin, a WAG 2018 investment-firm licence, and an e-money institution with PSD2 permissions
- Securities business is covered by the Austrian investor compensation scheme (AeW), which pays 90% of an eligible claim up to EUR 20,000
- Free EUR SEPA deposits and withdrawals, and ten fiat currencies supported including CHF, PLN, CZK and HUF
- Bitpanda Fusion gives a published fee ladder from 0.25% to 0.02%, aggregated liquidity from 12+ venues, over 2,000 pairs and native TradingView charting on the same balance
- One of the highest-rated investing apps in the DACH region — 4.70 from roughly 55,000 German App Store ratings
- Precious metals with no storage or custody fee, VAT-free, physically stored and insured, with gold at a 0.5% buy premium
Cons
7- The standard broker product hides its cost in the price: Bitpanda quotes a 0.99% premium on Bitcoin but admits the per-trade fee spans 0.00% to 2.49%, so you cannot predict what a given order will cost before opening the summary screen
- Silver and platinum carry a 2.5% buy premium and a 2% sell premium — a 4.5% round trip before any price movement
- Cheap crypto trading requires knowing that Fusion exists and switching to it; the default surface is the expensive one
- Privately held with no stock-market listing and no banking licence, so there is far less public financial disclosure than at Nasdaq-listed Coinbase
- The Austrian FMA fined Bitpanda GmbH EUR 70,000 in 2026 for breaching MiCAR Articles 7 and 8 on whitepaper and marketing-communication duties — the regulator’s first MiCAR sanction, and a disclosure obligation rather than a client-money failure
- No forex, no listed options, no exchange-traded futures and no bond market — leveraged exposure comes only from margin trading and leverage tokens
- Margin trading on stocks at up to 20x, with four-hourly borrowing fees and documented negative-equity repayment rules, is an aggressive product to place inside an app aimed largely at beginners

| Stocks (per order) | €1 | Real Securities on Bitpanda carry a fixed fee per order, charged in the currency used for payment: EUR 1 when paying in euro, otherwise USD 1, GBP 1, CHF 1, HUF 400, PLN 4, RON 5, CZK 20, SEK 10 or DKK 10. These are actual shares held in a securities custody account — not derivatives — executed on the Quotrix exchange, tradable Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 23:00. The older commission-free, spread-only model for fractional stock derivatives has been replaced by this schedule. |

2026 · FMA€70,000
The Austrian FMA imposed a final penalty on Bitpanda GmbH for breaching Articles 7 and 8 of MiCAR: a whitepaper was not submitted to the authority 20 working days in advance, a marketing communication was issued without the corresponding whitepaper having been published, and mandatory disclosures were missing. It is the FMA's first MiCAR sanction, made public on 14 August 2026, and concerns disclosure duties rather than client money or custody.

Bitpanda offers up to 10x leverage on more than 120 crypto assets and markets margin trading on stocks and ETFs at up to 20x — it describes the latter as the first stocks-and-ETFs margin product in Europe. Borrowing fees accrue every four hours and reduce the margin level; Bitpanda's own documentation covers repayments and negative equity, so a losing margin position can leave a balance owing. Leverage tokens (2x long, 1x short and similar) provide a separate, non-margin route to leveraged exposure.

Fees: what Bitpanda actually costs
Bitpanda runs two very different price models, and most users only ever meet the expensive one.
The standard broker product builds its cost into the quoted price. Bitpanda states the premium for buying and selling Bitcoin is 0.99%, and that all premiums for crypto and digital assets are already included in the real-time prices shown, so the amount on the confirmation screen is what you get. It also concedes that the trade fee now itemised in the trade summary ranges from 0.00% to 2.49% depending on asset, size and market conditions. That range is the honest number, and it is wide enough that you should always open the summary before confirming.
Bitpanda Fusion replaces that with a published ladder on 30-day volume: 0.25% up to EUR 100,000, then 0.21% to EUR 500,000, 0.17% to EUR 2.5 million, 0.13% to EUR 10 million, 0.08% to EUR 50 million, 0.05% to EUR 250 million and 0.02% above it. Fusion also charges nothing on deposits or withdrawals across more than ten funding methods including SEPA Instant, and quotes natively in EUR, USD, CHF and GBP so there is no FX conversion leaking out of returns.
Stocks, ETFs and ETCs are a flat EUR 1 per trade when you pay in euro. That is excellent on a EUR 2,000 order (0.05%) and poor on a EUR 100 order (1%), which matters because Bitpanda's audience skews towards small regular purchases. If you pay in another currency, the fixed fee is set in that currency instead: USD, GBP or CHF 1, HUF 400, PLN 4, RON 5, CZK 20, SEK 10 or DKK 10 per order.
Precious metals are priced as premiums with no storage or custody fee: gold 0.5% buy / 1% sell, silver and platinum 2.5% / 2%, palladium 2.2% / 1.8%. Gold is competitive; silver at a 4.5% round trip is not.
Elsewhere: EUR SEPA is free in and out, PayPal deposits cost 1.49% and Klarna 0.49%, crypto withdrawals pass through network fees only, and holding VSN lets you pay fees in the token for a 20% discount. Opening and maintaining the account is free, and there is no custody or inactivity charge. Funding is not quite unrestricted, though: fiat deposits and withdrawals have a EUR 10 minimum (GBP, CHF and USD 10, PLN 45, HUF 4,000, CZK 250, DKK 75, SEK 125), which is a different figure from the EUR 1.00 minimum order size.
Safety and regulation
Bitpanda is regulated as four separate businesses, and knowing which one holds which part of your portfolio is the key to understanding what is protected.
Bitpanda GmbH (Stella-Klein-Löw Weg 17, 1020 Vienna, FN 569240 v) is authorised as a Crypto Asset Service Provider under MiCAR by the Austrian FMA. Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH (Dircksenstrasse 4, 10179 Berlin, HRB 258842 B) holds a parallel MiCAR CASP authorisation from BaFin, BaFin-ID 10159692, operating under the KWG, MiCAR and the German KMAG. German consumers can escalate disputes to the Deutsche Bundesbank or BaFin conciliation boards — a concrete right that crypto-only venues rarely offer.
Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH (FN 551181 k) is a licensed investment services provider under the Austrian WAG 2018, and this is the entity that matters for shares. It is a shareholder in the Anlegerentschädigung von Wertpapierfirmen GmbH, the Austrian investor compensation scheme, which covers 90% of an eligible retail claim up to EUR 20,000 if the firm fails. That protection applies to securities — stocks, ETFs and ETCs — and to nothing else. It does not cover market losses.
Bitpanda Payments GmbH (FN 501412 x, institute code 94646) is an E-Money Institution licensed by the FMA with e-money and PSD2 permissions, covering the payments and card side. Bitpanda Metals GmbH operates under the Austrian Gewerbeordnung rather than a financial licence, supervised by the Vienna district authority — worth knowing when you buy gold. Outside Europe, Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC holds a Dubai VARA broker-dealer licence, VASP reference VL/2025/03/001.
There is also a sanction on the record. In August 2026 the FMA fined Bitpanda GmbH EUR 70,000 for breaching MiCAR Articles 7 and 8: a whitepaper was not submitted to the regulator 20 working days in advance, a marketing communication went out before the corresponding whitepaper was published, and mandatory disclosures were missing. The penalty is final and was announced on 14 August 2026 as the FMA’s first MiCAR sanction. It concerns disclosure duties rather than client money or custody, but it is the kind of thing a broker’s own pages will not tell you.
The honest gaps. Crypto assets have no compensation scheme — MiCAR mandates segregation, custody standards and disclosure, but no guarantee fund. Bitpanda holds no banking licence, so cash is safeguarded e-money rather than an insured deposit. And Bitpanda is privately held: there is a CRR disclosure for the German asset-management entity and Austrian statutory filings, but nothing approaching the quarterly public reporting a listed competitor must produce.
Trading platforms
Bitpanda ships two products under one login, and the gap between them is the widest in this comparison.
The standard app, on iOS, Android and at app.bitpanda.com, is deliberately simple: buy, sell, swap, savings plan, limit order, staking, portfolio. It is the reason Bitpanda rates 4.70 from roughly 55,000 ratings on the German App Store, where it is listed as "Bitpanda: Krypto, Aktien & ETF". Everything is two taps away, everything is in German, and nothing about it will intimidate a first-time investor. It is also close to analytics-free — no depth, no indicators, no order book.
Bitpanda Fusion is the answer to that criticism, and it is a serious one. Fusion aggregates order books from more than 12 global exchanges and liquidity providers, routes each order to the best available bid or ask across all of them, and lists over 2,000 pairs with native EUR, USD, CHF and GBP quote currencies so European traders are not paying an invisible FX spread. It carries native TradingView charting with the full indicator and drawing set, market, limit and stop-limit orders, and the degressive fee ladder down to 0.02%. Bitpanda describes it as an advanced broker rather than an exchange — it is aggregating other venues' books, not running its own.
Fusion API gives full REST access to the execution engine with scoped read-only, trade-only or custom keys that can be revoked instantly; it is not available in the UK. Fusion MCP is the more unusual piece: an open-source Model Context Protocol server, hosted by Bitpanda and free to use, that lets an MCP-compatible AI assistant place orders and manage positions against a Fusion account. Bitpanda is explicit that the API key never leaves its infrastructure for a third-party AI provider, that keys are scoped and revocable, and that rate limits guard against runaway request loops.
Switching between the two is a toggle in the profile or sidebar. The problem is that nothing in the default experience tells a cost-sensitive user they should.
Markets and products
Bitpanda's range is the broadest in this comparison for a European retail investor, precisely because it is not crypto-only.
- Crypto: Bitpanda's public ticker returned 875 tradable assets in August 2026, of which four are metals — roughly 871 crypto assets. Fusion adds over 2,000 pairs on top for advanced users.
- Real Securities: more than 7,500 stocks and 2,500 ETFs and ETCs, held as actual shares in a securities custody account rather than derivatives. Trades execute on the Quotrix exchange, Monday to Friday 07:30–23:00, at EUR 1 per trade. Dividends, stock splits, mergers and shareholder meetings are handled under issuer and exchange rules.
- Precious metals: gold, silver, platinum and palladium, physically stored, insured and VAT-free, with no storage or custody fee.
- Bitpanda Crypto Indices (BCI): BCI10, BCI25 and sector indices covering infrastructure, DeFi, media and entertainment, and smart contracts — an index product rather than a basket you rebalance yourself.
- Leverage tokens such as Bitcoin/EUR 2x Long and Ethereum/EUR 1x Short, plus margin trading on 120+ crypto assets at up to 10x and on stocks and ETFs at up to 20x.
- Yield and utility: Bitpanda Earn, Cash Plus, staking, savings plans, limit orders, Bitpanda Spotlight for new listings, and the Bitpanda Visa card with Bitcoin cashback.
- Web3: the Vision (VSN) token, Vision Wallet, Vision Chain and a Launchpad, plus institutional partnerships with BlackRock, DWS and Amundi.
The critical point for a DACH reader: unlike Coinbase and Kraken, Bitpanda sells real shares to European retail clients. Kraken's EEA equivalent is xStocks, which are tokenised and confer no ownership; Coinbase does not offer EEA equities at all. If you want one account holding bitcoin and an actual position in SAP, this is the only one of the three that does it.
Account opening, funding and the DACH tax question
Opening takes minutes and needs a supported identity document from one of roughly 40 accepted countries — the EEA plus Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the UK (through Bitpanda Broker UK Ltd), Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, the Vatican, Serbia and Turkey. US citizens and US residents cannot open an account. Before your first securities trade you must supply a tax identification number, confirm name, date of birth, address and citizenship, and complete a short appropriateness test; Bitpanda warns that answering the "are you a US taxable person" question wrongly will lock trading.
Funding is a strength. EUR SEPA is free in both directions, and Bitpanda supports fiat deposits in EUR, USD, GBP, CHF, TRY, PLN, HUF, CZK, DKK and SEK — a much wider spread than Coinbase's practical European coverage. Cards, PayPal (1.49%), Klarna (0.49%), open banking via Tink, Apple Pay and Google Pay round it out. Fusion charges nothing on deposits or withdrawals across all supported methods. Crypto withdrawals pass through network fees only, dynamically adjusted for congestion, and Bitpanda states it takes no margin on them.
Then the question that decides the DACH market: führt Bitpanda die Abgeltungsteuer beziehungsweise die KESt automatisch ab? For Real Securities, Bitpanda states directly that for users based in Austria or Germany it manages tax handling in line with local regulations. In practice that means the securities side behaves like a domestic depot rather than a foreign account you have to reconcile yourself — no manual Anlage KAP reconstruction for those trades, no Austrian KESt self-declaration.
Two caveats worth stating plainly. First, this applies to Real Securities, not automatically to every product — crypto disposals in particular follow separate national rules, and Bitpanda's stocks-margin documentation has its own tax-withholding and cost-report article. Second, tax treatment is personal. If your situation is unusual, confirm it with a Steuerberater rather than with an app. But as a default, this is the concrete reason a German or Austrian investor picks Bitpanda over a foreign venue — and neither Coinbase nor Kraken offers anything comparable in the region.
Research and education
Education is one of Bitpanda's genuine strengths; research is one of its genuine weaknesses.
Bitpanda Academy is a large, well-structured, free eLearning platform published in German as well as English, with defined tracks: Crypto 101 for blockchain and coin fundamentals, Investing 101 for portfolio basics, Stocks 101 covering how shares, ETFs and real ownership work, and dedicated material on staking, tokenisation, security practice and personal finance. For a German-speaking beginner this is the most accessible investing curriculum any of these three platforms offers, and it is clearly built to convert a curious reader into a confident one rather than to sell a specific product.
The help centre deserves separate credit. Bitpanda's support articles are unusually specific for a crypto firm — the fee articles name percentages per metal, the Real Securities article states the exact trading hours, execution venue and tax position, and the Fusion article publishes the full seven-tier fee table. Compare that with competitors who hide their retail fee ladder behind a login.
Research, by contrast, is thin. There are live price pages, a blog and a new AI investing assistant, but there is no screener worth the name, no analyst estimates, no fundamentals database, no portfolio attribution and no house equity research. On the standard app there is not even a depth view. Fusion imports TradingView charting, which closes most of the technical-analysis gap for crypto, but it does nothing for anyone researching whether to hold a particular share.
The fair summary: Bitpanda teaches you how markets work better than it helps you decide what to buy. If you already know your thesis, that is fine. If you were hoping the platform would help you form one, it will not.
Customer support
Support is solid rather than remarkable, and its main advantage is linguistic and legal rather than operational.
The published channel set is 24/7 live chat, reachable from inside a logged-in account, backed by email and a ticket queue and a very large help centre. There is no advertised retail phone line. Language coverage is the widest in this comparison for a European user — German first, plus English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian, Croatian and Czech — which is the practical difference between explaining a locked account in your own language and translating it into English first.
The structural advantage is regulatory. Because Bitpanda Asset Management GmbH is BaFin-authorised, German consumers can escalate a dispute to the Deutsche Bundesbank or BaFin conciliation boards under section 14 of the Unterlassungsklagegesetz, and Bitpanda states it participates in those proceedings. Austrian payment disputes route to the joint conciliation body for the Austrian banking industry under section 98 ZaDiG 2018. Neither Coinbase nor Kraken puts a German-language statutory arbitration path in front of a DACH customer as clearly.
The weaknesses are the familiar ones for a fast-growing fintech. Chat is the only real-time channel; complex cases involving securities transfers, corporate actions or margin liquidations can bounce between teams because they sit in different legal entities; and account restrictions triggered by the mandatory profile update or the US-taxable-person question generate a steady stream of frustrated posts. Bitpanda's own troubleshooting article on stock-trading locks is, revealingly, one of its longest.
App-store sentiment is strong — 4.70 from around 55,000 German ratings — but app ratings measure the product more than they measure the service desk.
Frequently asked questions
For Real Securities — stocks, ETFs and ETCs — Bitpanda states that it manages tax handling in line with local regulations for users based in Austria and Germany. In practice that means the securities side behaves like a domestic depot rather than a foreign account you must reconcile yourself. This is the single biggest reason a DACH investor would choose Bitpanda over Coinbase or Kraken, neither of which offers EEA retail real shares at all. Note that it applies to Real Securities specifically; crypto disposals follow separate national rules, and margin positions on stocks have their own tax-withholding and cost-report treatment. Confirm anything unusual with a Steuerberater.
It depends entirely on which product you use. On the standard broker app the cost is a premium built into the price: Bitpanda quotes 0.99% for buying and selling Bitcoin, but states the per-trade fee shown in the summary ranges from 0.00% to 2.49% depending on asset, size and conditions. On Bitpanda Fusion the cost is explicit and much lower — 0.25% up to EUR 100,000 of 30-day volume, falling through 0.21%, 0.17%, 0.13%, 0.08% and 0.05% to 0.02% above EUR 250 million. Stocks, ETFs and ETCs are a flat EUR 1 per trade regardless of size when paid in euro (other payment currencies carry their own fixed fee, such as USD 1, GBP 1 or CHF 1). Holding VSN and paying fees in it takes another 20% off.
Real shares. Bitpanda's Real Securities are held as actual holdings in a securities custody account, not as derivative contracts. Trades execute on the Quotrix exchange, Monday to Friday between 07:30 and 23:00, and you are entitled to dividends, stock splits, mergers and other corporate actions under issuer and exchange rules. This replaced the older derivative-backed fractional stock product. The securities business sits in Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH under an Austrian WAG 2018 licence, which is also what brings it inside the Austrian investor compensation scheme.
Partly, and it depends on the asset. Securities held through Bitpanda Financial Services GmbH fall under the Austrian investor compensation scheme (Anlegerentschädigung von Wertpapierfirmen GmbH), which pays 90% of an eligible retail claim up to EUR 20,000 if the firm fails. Crypto assets have no equivalent — MiCAR requires segregation, custody standards and disclosure but creates no compensation fund. Cash sits with Bitpanda Payments GmbH as safeguarded e-money, not as an insured bank deposit, because Bitpanda holds no banking licence. None of these schemes covers market losses.
Bitpanda is the only one of the three that sells real shares and ETFs to EEA retail clients and the only one that handles Austrian and German tax on them. Kraken has by far the strongest regulatory stack and much cheaper crypto trading at volume — but its 11,000 commission-free stocks are US-only, and what a German client gets is xStocks tokenised exposure. Coinbase is Nasdaq-listed and has the best mobile app but offers EEA customers crypto only, with opaque simple-trade pricing and a 35% staking commission. Choose Bitpanda for breadth and tax convenience, Kraken for execution quality and licences, Coinbase for a listed counterparty and the smoothest first purchase.
Fusion is Bitpanda's advanced crypto venue, running on the same account and balance as the standard app. It aggregates order books from more than 12 exchanges and liquidity providers, routes each order to the best available bid or ask, lists over 2,000 pairs with native EUR, USD, CHF and GBP quotes, adds TradingView charting and stop-limit orders, and charges a published ladder from 0.25% down to 0.02% with no deposit or withdrawal fees. It also exposes a REST API and a free hosted MCP server for AI assistants. If you trade crypto more than occasionally, switching Fusion on is almost certainly cheaper than staying on the default surface — which is exactly the criticism, since nothing in the standard app tells you so.
