Our verdict
Saxo suits the investor who wants one professional-grade account for a multi-asset portfolio and is willing to accept a small premium over the absolute cheapest broker in exchange for a bank licence, a superb platform and a deep bond and options offering. Since the 2024 price cut, a USD 5,000 US share purchase costs USD 4 in commission — close enough to the discount brokers that the platform quality decides it. It is a poor fit for three groups: anyone who converts currency constantly, because the 0.25% FX markup is over a hundred times what Interactive Brokers charges and will quietly dominate your costs; anyone who wants spot crypto, which Saxo does not offer; and anyone with a small portfolio in a market where the holding fee still applies, since a percentage custody charge on a EUR 5,000 account is proportionally painful. For a EUR 100,000 multi-asset portfolio traded a few dozen times a year, Saxo is one of the strongest all-round propositions in Europe.
Best for
- Multi-asset portfolios
- Bond investors
- Options and futures traders
- Platform quality seekers
- European investors wanting a bank
Less suitable for
- High-frequency currency converters
- Spot crypto buyers
- Very small portfolios
- Fractional-share investors
Pros & cons
Pros
8- Full Danish banking licence (Finanstilsynet licence 1149) and SIFI designation — a stronger structural safeguard than a broker-only permission
- US stocks and ETFs at 0.08% with a USD 1 minimum on the entry-level Classic tier, and 0.05%/0.03% at higher tiers
- Roughly 71,000 instruments including 23,000 stocks, 7,400 ETFs, 5,200 bonds, 3,100 listed options and 250 futures across 50-plus exchanges
- SaxoTraderGO and the mobile app are the best-designed retail trading interfaces in Europe, and the app is not a cut-down version of the web platform
- Mutual funds carry no transaction commission, no custody fee and no platform fee
- One of very few retail platforms with a genuinely usable bond offering — 5,200 government and corporate issues with live prices
- No inactivity fee, no minimum deposit on Classic, and free withdrawals
- Majority-owned by J. Safra Sarasin since 2026, adding a large private-banking group behind the balance sheet
Cons
6- Currency conversion costs 0.25% over mid-market for EU and Swiss clients, and up to 0.60% at the UK entity's Classic tier — the single largest hidden cost for cross-currency investors
- A holding fee of up to 0.15% a year on shares, ETFs and bonds still applies at several booking entities; coverage varies by country and is easy to overlook
- No spot cryptocurrency trading — exposure is limited to exchange-traded products
- No fractional shares on ordinary orders, so building small positions in high-priced US stocks is awkward
- Bank transfer is the only funding route since card deposits were withdrawn in April 2025
- Trustpilot sentiment sits around 3.8 with responsiveness of support the recurring complaint, despite good published coverage

Full review: Saxo
Fees: what Saxo actually costs
Saxo's pricing was overhauled in late 2024 and the change was substantial — this is no longer a premium-priced platform. All figures below are for Saxo Bank A/S, the Danish entity that books most EU retail clients, on the entry-level Classic tier.
- US stocks and ETFs: 0.08% of trade value, minimum USD 1
- European stocks and ETFs: 0.08%, minimum EUR 2 (SIX Swiss orders: CHF 3 minimum)
- US options: USD 2.00 per contract
- Futures: USD 3.00 per contract
- Bonds: 0.20% of nominal, minimum EUR 20
- Mutual funds: zero commission, zero custody, zero platform fee
- EUR/USD spot: 0.7 pips is Saxo's indicative minimum on Classic; independent measurement of a Classic account puts the average nearer 1.0 pip
Two upgrade tiers cut those numbers meaningfully. Platinum (from USD 200,000 funded) drops stocks to 0.05% and options to USD 1.00; VIP (from USD 1,000,000) reaches 0.03% and USD 0.75.
Two costs deserve more attention than the commissions. Currency conversion runs 0.25% over the mid-market rate for EU and Swiss entities — the UK entity charges from 0.60% down to 0.20% by tier. On a USD 10,000 US share purchase funded from euros, that is USD 25 — more than three times the USD 8 commission on the same order. Investors who trade US names regularly should hold a USD sub-account and convert deliberately rather than per trade.
The second is the holding fee: Saxo's published rate is 0.15% a year on Classic (0.12% Platinum, 0.09% VIP) on share, ETF and bond positions, charged monthly. Whether it applies to you depends on your booking entity and country — Saxo has waived it in several European markets — so verify against your own rates-and-conditions page rather than assuming. There is no inactivity fee, no minimum deposit and no withdrawal fee.
Safety and regulation
Saxo is not a broker with a bank-like feel; it is an actual bank. Saxo Bank A/S holds licence 1149 from Finanstilsynet, the Danish FSA, which in Denmark is the only permission that allows a firm to take deposits from the public. In June 2023 the Danish FSA designated Saxo a Systemically Important Financial Institution, which brings higher capital requirements, tighter liquidity rules and more intensive supervision. Very few retail-facing trading platforms carry that designation.
Protection depends on your booking entity:
- Saxo Bank A/S (Denmark): Garantiformuen covers cash to EUR 100,000 and securities claims to EUR 20,000
- Saxo Capital Markets UK Ltd (FCA): FSCS cover to GBP 85,000
- Saxo Bank (Schweiz) AG (FINMA): Swiss banking licence, esisuisse depositor protection to CHF 100,000
- Further licensed entities operate in Singapore (MAS), Japan (JFSA), Australia, Hong Kong, France and the UAE
Client securities are held in segregation and are the client's property; they sit outside the bank's balance sheet in an insolvency. Retail negative balance protection applies under EU and UK rules.
Ownership changed materially in this cycle. J. Safra Sarasin Group completed the acquisition of roughly 71% of Saxo Bank in March 2026, buying out Geely Financials Denmark, Mandatum and minority holders; founder Kim Fournais retained around 28% and moved to chairman. In practical terms that replaces a Chinese-automotive-linked shareholder base with a Swiss-Brazilian private-banking group — a change most European clients read as a positive on the governance question. Saxo is not publicly listed, so its disclosure is annual-report-level rather than quarterly-filing-level.
Trading platforms
Platform quality is Saxo's clearest competitive advantage, and it is not close.
SaxoTraderGO is the flagship web and tablet platform. It manages something rare: the same interface serves someone buying a EUR 500 ETF and someone building a four-leg options spread, without either feeling like the wrong customer. Charting is capable, the instrument search actually finds things, order tickets are clean, and the portfolio and performance views are the kind of thing that usually costs extra elsewhere. Nothing about it feels like a compromise reached by committee.
SaxoTraderPRO is the downloadable desktop terminal for people who need more: multi-monitor workspaces, depth-of-market ladders, advanced and algorithmic order types, and module-level customisation. It is the tier where Saxo competes directly with Trader Workstation, and it wins on usability while giving up some depth on options analytics.
SaxoInvestor goes the other way — a long-only, simplified interface for stocks, ETFs, bonds and funds, aimed at investors who never want to see a derivatives ticket.
The mobile app deserves specific credit. It carries essentially the full instrument universe, real charting, options chains, order management and account administration. Most broker apps are a viewer with a buy button; this one is a trading platform. For a large share of Saxo clients it is the primary interface, not the backup.
For developers, Saxo OpenAPI offers documented REST and streaming endpoints with a public sandbox, and TradingView integration is available in supported regions.
Markets and products
Saxo publishes a headline figure of roughly 71,000 tradable instruments and, unusually for a marketing number, the composition holds up:
- 23,000+ stocks across more than 50 exchanges — US, UK, European, Nordic, Asian and Australian
- 7,400+ ETFs including the full UCITS universe European investors need
- 5,200+ bonds — government and corporate, with live tradable prices rather than a request-for-quote form
- 3,100+ listed options from around 20 exchanges, and 250+ futures contracts
- Mutual funds at zero commission and zero custody
- CFDs on shares, indices, commodities and bonds, plus forex on a large pair list with metals
- Structured products, warrants and certificates depending on entity
The bond desk is the standout. Retail access to individual fixed income is genuinely rare — most European platforms offer a token list at a request-for-quote price — and Saxo's 5,200 issues with visible pricing is one of the few reasons an income investor would choose it outright.
The gap is crypto. Saxo does not offer spot cryptocurrency trading or a wallet. Exposure is available through exchange-traded products only. If a coin position is part of your plan, that portion lives somewhere else.
Fractional shares are also absent on ordinary orders, which matters more than it used to now that single US shares routinely cost several hundred dollars. Recurring ETF plans through AutoInvest carry no buy commission and are the intended answer for small regular contributions.
Account opening and funding
Onboarding is genuinely modern. In most European markets Saxo supports electronic identification — MitID in Denmark, BankID in the Nordics, comparable schemes elsewhere — and applications frequently complete the same day. Where manual document review is needed, expect one to three business days. There is no minimum deposit on the Classic tier, so you can open, fund with EUR 500 and start.
The application covers the usual MiFID ground: identity, tax residence, employment, source of funds, and a knowledge-and-experience assessment per product group. That last section gates leveraged products; answer it honestly, because appropriateness warnings are the mechanism that protects you from products you should not be in.
Funding is bank transfer only. Card deposits were withdrawn as a method in April 2025, so SEPA credits and international wires are the routes in. SEPA typically clears same day to two business days; wires take one to three. Deposits are free.
Withdrawals are free and usually reach the registered bank account within one business day, which is faster than most competitors and one of the quieter reasons clients stay.
The part worth planning is currency. Saxo supports a wide set of account currencies, and holding sub-accounts in USD, EUR, GBP and CHF lets you convert on your own schedule rather than paying 0.25% on every cross-currency trade. Set that up before your first US purchase, not after.
Research and education
Saxo produces genuine in-house research rather than reselling a third-party feed, and it is better than the category norm.
Saxo Strategy Team output covers macro, equities, fixed income, FX and commodities with named analysts and dated calls. The Quarterly Outlook and the annual Outrageous Predictions — deliberately provocative low-probability scenarios — are widely read outside the client base, which is a reasonable proxy for quality. Daily market commentary, podcasts and video briefings run through the Saxo platform and website.
Inside SaxoTraderGO, the practical research tools include screeners for stocks, ETFs, bonds and options, integrated news, analyst consensus and fundamental data on equity pages, and thematic baskets that group instruments around trends. Saxo also publishes curated ETF and stock lists that function as starting points rather than recommendations.
Education is competent but not the reason to be here. The learning centre covers instrument mechanics, platform tutorials, options basics and risk management, and there is a regular webinar programme. It is aimed at someone who already understands they are taking risk, not at someone starting from zero — a beginner will find brokers with more structured curricula elsewhere.
The demo account is unrestricted and mirrors the live platform, which makes it a legitimate place to learn the options ticket or test a bond order before committing capital.
Customer support
Saxo's published support is broad for a European broker: phone, live chat, email and an in-platform chatbot, staffed from 16 service locations across its markets, in a language list that runs to English, Danish, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Swedish, Norwegian, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. Phone lines run local office hours Monday to Friday, roughly 09:00 to 17:30, with trading desks covering market hours. Live chat typically answers in under a minute and email within a day.
Reality is more mixed than that suggests. Trustpilot sentiment across more than 6,000 reviews sits around 3.8, and the recurring negative theme is reachability — clients describing chat handoffs that go nowhere, phone queues at market open, and slow resolution of anything that needs a specialist rather than a generalist. Positive reviews consistently praise execution quality and the platform, less often the service.
The pattern is worth naming plainly: routine questions get handled well and quickly; account-specific or edge-case problems can drag. This is a common shape for a broker scaling past 1.5 million clients, and it is better than the industry's worst but short of what a bank licence and a private-banking parent might lead you to expect.
Practically: use live chat for anything simple, phone for anything urgent and time-sensitive, and keep written records of account instructions. The help centre is well-organised and resolves most platform and fee questions faster than a person will.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Saxo Bank A/S holds licence 1149 from the Danish FSA, which is the only Danish permission that allows a firm to accept public deposits, and it has been designated a Systemically Important Financial Institution since 2023. Practically this means higher capital and liquidity requirements, more intensive supervision, and cash covered by the Danish deposit guarantee up to EUR 100,000 rather than only by an investor compensation scheme. Securities are held segregated and remain your property regardless.
On the Classic tier, a USD 5,000 purchase of a US stock costs 0.08% — USD 4 in commission. The larger number is currency conversion: funding that trade from euros at 0.25% over mid-market costs roughly USD 12.50. The fix is to hold a USD sub-account and convert in larger, less frequent blocks rather than paying the markup on every trade.
Saxo's published holding fee is 0.15% a year on Classic (0.12% Platinum, 0.09% VIP) on share, ETF and bond positions, charged monthly, with mutual funds exempt. Whether it applies depends on your booking entity and country — Saxo has waived or zero-rated it in several European markets. Because this varies materially, check the rates-and-conditions page for your own entity before you open rather than relying on a general figure.
Not as spot. Saxo does not offer a crypto wallet or spot coin trading. Exposure is available through exchange-traded products that track crypto assets, which gives you price participation inside a regulated brokerage account but not the coins themselves. If holding actual crypto matters to you, you will need a separate provider for that sleeve.
J. Safra Sarasin Group completed the purchase of roughly 71% of Saxo Bank in March 2026, acquiring the stakes previously held by Geely Financials Denmark, Mandatum and minority shareholders, with founder Kim Fournais retaining around 28% and becoming chairman. Daniel Belfer was appointed CEO. The banking licences, entity structure and client protections are unchanged; the substantive difference is a large Swiss-Brazilian private-banking group behind the balance sheet.
Almost every retail client starts on Classic, which has no minimum. Platinum requires roughly USD 200,000 in funded equity and cuts stock commission from 0.08% to 0.05% and options from USD 2.00 to USD 1.00 per contract; VIP requires about USD 1,000,000 for 0.03% and USD 0.75. For a moderately active investor the tier upgrade is worth a few hundred euros a year — real, but not a reason to move capital you would otherwise deploy differently.
