Our verdict
XM is a good first broker and a mediocre second one. If you are learning, the combination of a USD 5 entry, Micro lots, a genuinely well-staffed education programme and 24/7 chat in your own language is worth real money — you will make fewer expensive mistakes here than at a leaner, colder broker. Once you are trading size, the maths turns against you: the Standard account typical 1.6–2.0 pip EUR/USD spread is roughly double what a raw-spread account elsewhere will charge, and the USD 5 monthly inactivity fee punishes exactly the buy-and-hold crowd that XM share CFDs otherwise attract. Move to Ultra Low or Zero the moment your volume justifies it. Avoid XM entirely if you want exchange-traded products, ETFs, options, or a broker whose main retail entity sits under a top-tier regulator — most non-EU clients are onboarded to XM Global in Belize, where no compensation scheme applies.
Best for
- Beginners
- Micro-lot position sizing
- Multilingual support
- Learning by webinar
- Very small starting capital

- High-volume FX traders
- ETF and long-term investors
- EU tier-1 regulation seekers
- Non-MetaTrader traders
Pros & cons
Pros
7- USD 5 minimum deposit on Micro, Standard, Ultra Low and Zero — one of the lowest entry points among multi-regulated brokers
- Zero account prices EUR/USD at 0.0–0.2 pips for USD 3.50 per lot per side (USD 7 round turn), competitive with dedicated ECN brokers
- Around 1,400 tradable instruments including roughly 1,200 share CFDs, 55 FX pairs, 23 cash indices and 40 crypto CFDs
- Education is not decoration: live webinars and seminars run in 30+ languages, backed by a research desk publishing daily market notes
- No deposit or withdrawal fees on the XM side, and cards and e-wallets settle same day
- Five licences across CySEC (120/10), ASIC (443670), DFSA (F003484), FSCA and Belize FSC, with segregated client money and negative balance protection
- 24/7 live chat in more than 30 languages, with first responses in testing consistently under two minutes
Cons
6- The default Standard and Micro accounts typically quote EUR/USD at 1.6–2.0 pips against an advertised from-1.0 headline — you pay a beginner tax unless you switch tier
- USD 5 per month inactivity fee after 90 days without a trade, which is unusual for a broker that also sells share CFDs to long-term holders
- Most non-EU retail clients are booked to XM Global Limited in Belize, a tier-3 jurisdiction with no investor compensation scheme
- Platform choice is MetaTrader or nothing — no proprietary desktop terminal, no TradingView order routing, and share CFDs exist only on MT5
- No ETFs, no exchange-traded options or futures, no bonds; the range is broad within CFDs and empty outside them
- Trustpilot sentiment sits near 3.8 with a persistent minority reporting withdrawal delays and spread widening around news

Full review: XM
Fees and what they cost in practice
XM sells four retail pricing tiers and the gap between them is larger than the marketing suggests.
Standard and Micro are the defaults. XM advertises spreads from 1.0 pip on EUR/USD, but independent measurement puts the typical figure at 1.6–2.0 pips in normal conditions. On a single standard lot that is roughly USD 16–20 of round-turn cost with no commission line to explain it.
XM Ultra Low narrows this to roughly 0.8–1.1 pips, still commission-free. Zero goes to 0.0–0.2 pips plus USD 3.50 per lot per side — USD 7 round turn — which lands at about USD 7–9 all-in and is genuinely competitive.
Outside the spread, XM is clean. There are no deposit or withdrawal fees, though bank wires under USD 200 pick up a USD 15 bank charge. Commodities and indices are quoted tightly: around 0.17 points on gold and 0.50 points on the US 500 benchmark. The one real irritant is the USD 5 monthly inactivity fee after 90 days, which is easy to trip if you hold share CFDs and do not trade. Overnight swaps are charged per instrument and tripled on Wednesdays; swap-free Islamic accounts are available on request.
The practical rule: if you place more than a handful of lots a month, the Standard account is the most expensive way to use XM, and switching tiers costs nothing.
Safety and regulation
XM operates as a group of separately licensed entities, and which one you sign with determines what protection you actually have.
- Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd — CySEC licence 120/10, Cyprus. EEA clients land here and are covered by the Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000 if the firm fails. That does not cover trading losses.
- Trading Point of Financial Instruments Pty Ltd — ASIC AFSL 443670, Australia.
- Trading Point MENA Limited — DFSA reference F003484, Dubai.
- XM Global Limited — Belize FSC 000261/106. This is the entity that takes most international retail clients, and it carries no compensation scheme.
- Trading Point of Financial Instruments (Pty) Ltd — FSCA, South Africa.
Across entities XM segregates client money at third-party banks and applies negative balance protection, so a retail account cannot be pushed below zero. The group has traded since 2009 without a headline enforcement action visible in the public registers we checked.
What we cannot tell you is that XM is safe in any absolute sense. It is not publicly listed, it holds no banking licence, and the tier-1 ASIC and UK routes are not open to ordinary retail applicants — the UK is served by a separate Trading.com brand. Read the account-opening documents to see which entity holds your money before you fund.
Trading platforms
XM has never built its own desktop terminal, and that is the honest summary of the platform story: you are getting MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5, plus a mobile wrapper.
MT4 remains the default for FX and gold traders because the entire expert-advisor ecosystem targets it. It does not carry XM share CFDs. MT5 does, and also brings depth of market, twenty-one timeframes and a materially faster strategy tester — if you are picking one, pick MT5 unless a specific EA forces your hand.
XM WebTrader is the browser build of MetaTrader. It works, it is dated, and it keeps account management in a separate portal rather than in the chart window.
The XM App is the piece XM actually built. It bundles MT4 and MT5 accounts, deposits, the research feed and copy trading into a single iOS and Android application, and it is a considerably nicer experience than the raw MetaTrader mobile apps. XM Copy Trading sits inside it as an in-house strategy-provider marketplace with published performance history.
What is missing is anything for a discretionary trader who dislikes MetaTrader: no in-house desktop platform, no TradingView order routing, and no API beyond what MetaTrader itself exposes.
Markets and products
The instrument list is broad within CFDs and empty outside them — about 1,400 tradable instruments in total.
- Forex — around 55 pairs, majors through to thin exotics.
- Share CFDs — roughly 1,200 names across US, UK, German and other European listings. MT5 only.
- Indices — 23 cash indices covering the usual US, European and Asian benchmarks.
- Commodities — gold, silver, platinum and palladium, three energy contracts and six softs.
- Crypto CFDs — around 40, with availability depending on your entity.
There is also a separate XM Shares account on the XM Global entity that deals cash equities rather than CFDs, with a USD 10,000 minimum. XM does not publish the commission schedule for it on its public fee pages, which is a transparency gap worth pressing support on before committing that much capital.
What you will not find: ETFs, exchange-traded options, futures, bonds, mutual funds or spread betting. If the plan involves a low-cost index ETF held for a decade, XM is structurally the wrong venue — the inactivity fee alone tells you what kind of customer this broker is built for.
Account opening and funding
The application itself is fast — roughly ten minutes online, choosing entity, account type, base currency and leverage as you go. Verification is where the variance lives: most clients clear identity and address checks within one to three business days, but reviewers in several regions report the process stretching towards a week when documents are queried.
The USD 5 minimum deposit on Micro, Standard, Ultra Low and Zero is the real story. It is low enough that funding stops being a gating decision, which is exactly why XM converts beginners so effectively. The Shares account is the outlier at USD 10,000.
Funding runs through cards, bank transfer and SEPA, Skrill, Neteller, SticPay and a long list of regional gateways. Base currencies include USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, AUD, HUF and PLN — pick one that matches your funding source, because converting on deposit costs an undisclosed FX spread.
Cards and e-wallets credit instantly; bank wires take two to five business days. Withdrawals are processed within 24 hours on the XM side and return to the original funding method. XM charges nothing, but bank wires under USD 200 attract a USD 15 charge and some local processors add their own.
Research and education
This is where XM is genuinely above its weight class, and it is not an accident — the education programme is the customer-acquisition engine.
The research desk publishes daily technical and fundamental notes, a weekly outlook, an economic calendar and video market commentary. It is competent broker research: useful for context and levels, not a substitute for independent analysis, and unavoidably house-flavoured given that XM earns on volume.
Education is the differentiator. XM runs live webinars in more than 30 languages on a published calendar, plus in-person seminars in several markets, a structured video library covering platform mechanics and risk management, and a demo account with no artificial expiry. For a trader working in Vietnamese, Turkish or Greek — languages most brokers ignore entirely — that is a material advantage no spread comparison captures.
The caveat is the obvious one. Broker education teaches you to trade; it does not teach you that the large majority of retail CFD accounts lose money. Treat the webinar calendar as a free skills resource and take your risk framework from somewhere with no stake in your turnover.
Customer support
Support is the most consistently praised part of XM and one of the few areas where it clearly beats larger competitors.
Live chat runs 24/7 and is staffed in more than 30 languages. In contact testing, first response typically lands inside two minutes and the agent can see the account rather than reading from a script — a low bar the industry routinely fails to clear. Email and phone are available on business days through regional numbers rather than one international line.
Language depth is the standout. XM covers German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Polish, Indonesian, Thai, Vietnamese, Hindi, Korean, Dutch, Greek and Hungarian among others, and staffs those channels with people who work in the language rather than routing through machine translation.
The counterweight sits in public review sentiment. The XM Trustpilot score hovers near 3.8 out of 5 across a few thousand reviews, with a persistent minority describing withdrawal delays and spreads widening around news events. That pattern is common across the leveraged-CFD sector, but read the negative reviews yourself rather than taking the headline number at face value.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. EEA clients are onboarded to Trading Point of Financial Instruments Ltd, which holds CySEC licence 120/10 and brings Investor Compensation Fund cover of up to EUR 20,000 per client if the firm fails. That is a firm-failure backstop, not protection against trading losses. Most clients outside the EEA are instead booked to XM Global Limited in Belize (FSC 000261/106), where no compensation scheme applies — check which entity appears on your account agreement before funding.
It depends entirely on the account tier. The default Standard and Micro accounts typically quote 1.6–2.0 pips with no commission, which is about USD 16–20 round turn per standard lot. XM Ultra Low narrows that to roughly 0.8–1.1 pips. The Zero account quotes 0.0–0.2 pips and adds USD 3.50 per lot per side — USD 7 round turn — landing near USD 7–9 all-in. Switching tiers is free, so there is little reason for an active trader to stay on Standard.
Yes. XM applies USD 5 per month once an account has gone 90 days without trading activity. Some third-party reviews quote a larger one-off charge followed by monthly fees; the fee documentation we found supports the USD 5 monthly figure. Either way, this is the fee to watch if you use XM share CFDs as a longer-term position rather than trading regularly — a single small trade each quarter resets the clock.
Both, but not on the same account. The Micro, Standard, Ultra Low and Zero accounts trade roughly 1,200 share CFDs on MT5, which are leveraged derivatives with overnight financing and no shareholder rights. A separate XM Shares account on the XM Global entity deals cash equities, but it requires a USD 10,000 minimum deposit and XM does not publish its commission schedule publicly, so ask support for current rates in writing before committing.
XM does not onboard clients from the United States or Canada, and the group does not serve UK or Australian retail applicants through the XM brand — the UK is handled by a separate Trading.com entity. Belgian restrictions on retail derivatives marketing also put that market out of scope, and sanctioned jurisdictions are excluded as standard. Availability shifts by entity, so confirm on the XM registration page for your country of residence.
It is one of the better first brokers in the leveraged-CFD field, mostly for non-price reasons: a USD 5 minimum, Micro lots that let you risk sensible amounts on a small balance, a demo account that does not expire, 24/7 chat in your own language, and a webinar calendar in more than 30 languages. The catch is that the default account wide spreads quietly tax your learning. Open on Standard if you must, but move to Ultra Low or Zero as soon as you trade with any regularity.
