Our verdict
Capital.com is the broker we would point an active European CFD trader to first. The pricing is honest — no commission, tight variable spreads, free funding both ways, and crucially no inactivity fee, which quietly separates it from most of its Cypriot peer group. Execution and the mobile app are excellent, and the Investmate education product is the rare case of broker education that is actually worth working through. Where it falls short is breadth and permanence: you cannot trade exchange-traded options or futures, there are no bonds or mutual funds, and the real share dealing product (Capital.com Invest) is a limited add-on rather than a genuine investing account. Use Capital.com if you trade leveraged positions actively across FX, indices and shares and you want the lowest realistic running cost. Do not use it if you want a buy-and-hold portfolio, tax-wrapped accounts, or exposure to instruments beyond CFDs — and be aware that around 80% of retail accounts at this broker lose money.
Best for
- Active CFD traders
- Forex day trading
- Mobile-first traders
- Beginners learning leverage
- Crypto CFD exposure
Less suitable for
- Long-term investors
- Options and futures traders
- Bond and fund buyers
- US and Canadian residents
Pros & cons
Pros
8- No commission on any CFD and no inactivity fee whatsoever — unusual in the CySEC/FCA CFD segment
- EUR/USD averages roughly 0.7 pips all-in, with spreads advertised from 0.6 pips
- Free deposits and free withdrawals, with a USD 20 minimum via card, Apple Pay or PayPal
- Roughly 5,585 tradeable symbols including 125 FX pairs and about 450 crypto CFDs
- Top-tier regulation through the FCA (793714) and ASIC (513393) alongside CySEC (319/17)
- Mobile app is genuinely at feature parity with the web platform, not a cut-down version
- Choice of proprietary platform, MT4, MT5 and native TradingView integration
- Investmate education and the built-in trading-bias detector are substantive, not marketing filler
Cons
6- 0.7% currency conversion markup on every trade settled outside your base currency — the single largest hidden cost here
- Overnight funding adds roughly 4.05% per year over the benchmark rate, which makes multi-week leveraged holds expensive
- No exchange-traded options, futures, bonds or mutual funds — the product set is essentially CFDs only
- Real share dealing (Capital.com Invest) covers only about 1,000 stocks and is limited to selected European countries
- Not publicly listed and founded only in 2016, so there is less financial transparency than at an exchange-listed broker
- Crypto CFDs are unavailable to UK retail clients, and the broker does not accept clients in the US, Canada, Japan, Belgium or Hong Kong

Fees and what they cost in practice
Capital.com charges no commission on any CFD. Every cost is either in the spread, in overnight funding, or in currency conversion — so the headline is clean but the details matter.
EUR/USD averages around 0.7 pips, with the broker advertising spreads from 0.6 pips. On a standard lot that is roughly USD 7 round-trip, which is competitive though not the absolute cheapest in Europe. Index CFDs are tight; the broker's own example table shows a 1-point spread on US Tech 100.
Two costs deserve more attention than the marketing gives them:
- Currency conversion: 0.7% of the spot rate for retail clients (0.5% for Pro). This applies whenever a position settles in a currency other than your account base currency. Trade US shares from a EUR account and you pay this twice — once in, once out. It will usually dwarf the spread.
- Overnight funding: the platform's own daily fee is 0.01111% for USD, EUR, CHF and JPY markets (0.01096% for GBP, CAD and SGD), applied on top of or against the relevant benchmark such as SOFR or SONIA. That daily fee annualises to roughly 4.05% before the benchmark. A leveraged position held for weeks is an expensive position.
Against that, the non-trading fees are genuinely good: account opening is free, the demo is free, deposits are free, withdrawals are free, and there is no inactivity fee — the broker reserves the right to close dormant accounts after six months rather than bill them. Minimum deposit is USD/EUR/GBP 20 by card, Apple Pay or PayPal, or 50 by wire. Guaranteed stop-loss orders carry a premium, but you only pay it if the stop is actually triggered.
Safety and regulation
Capital.com operates a multi-entity structure, and which entity holds your account determines what protection you actually have.
- Capital Com (UK) Limited — authorised by the FCA under firm reference 793714. UK clients fall under the FSCS, covering up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant.
- Capital Com SV Investments Limited — the main European entity, authorised by CySEC under licence 319/17 (company number HE354252). EEA clients are covered by the Cypriot Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000.
- Capital Com Group Ltd — a newer Cypriot entity under CySEC licence 463/25.
- Capital Com Australia Pty Ltd — ASIC AFSL 513393.
Holding both an FCA and an ASIC licence puts Capital.com in the upper regulatory tier for a CFD-first broker. Client money is held in segregated accounts at third-party banks, negative balance protection applies to retail clients as a regulatory requirement, and the group publishes audited financials.
Two caveats worth stating plainly. First, the group is not publicly listed, so you get less financial disclosure than from an exchange-traded competitor. Second, it was founded in 2016, which is a short track record by the standards of the industry — long enough to have been tested by 2020 and 2022 volatility, but not by much more. None of this makes an account risk-free: CFDs are leveraged products and the broker's own disclosure puts retail loss rates near 80%.
Trading platforms
You get four routes into the same account, which is more choice than most competitors offer.
The proprietary web platform is the default and the best of them. Charting is deep without being cluttered, order tickets are quick, and the watchlist and instrument search are genuinely well organised — you can find an obscure share CFD in a couple of keystrokes. A distinctive extra is the built-in trading-bias detector, which flags behavioural patterns such as overtrading or loss-chasing in your own history. It is the sort of feature that sounds like a gimmick and turns out to be useful.
The mobile app is the standout. Most brokers ship a reduced app; Capital.com's runs at effective parity with the web platform, including full charting, alerts and the same analytics. If you trade primarily from a phone, this is among the strongest options in the European CFD market.
For traders who need automation, MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 are both available, which covers expert advisors and custom indicators. And there is a native TradingView integration so you can place orders straight from TradingView charts against your Capital.com balance — a real advantage if TradingView is already your analysis environment.
What is missing is a professional desktop terminal in the mould of a full DMA platform, and there is no depth-of-market ladder. This is a retail platform stack, built well.
Markets and products
Capital.com lists roughly 5,585 tradeable symbols, which is a large book by CFD standards. The breakdown covers:
- 125 forex pairs, including majors, minors and a decent set of exotics
- Share CFDs across US, UK and European listings
- Index CFDs on all the major benchmarks
- Commodity CFDs across energy, metals and agriculture
- ETF CFDs
- Around 450 crypto CFDs — one of the largest crypto CFD selections available anywhere, though not offered to UK retail clients under FCA rules
The important structural point: almost all of this is CFDs. You are trading a leveraged derivative contract with the broker, not owning the underlying asset. There is no dividend ownership, no voting rights, and no transfer of holdings to another broker.
There is one exception. Capital.com Invest offers commission-free dealing in real, exchange-traded shares — around 1,000 US and European stocks, quoted directly from the exchange without an added markup. It launched in the UK, France and Germany and has expanded gradually. It is a useful complement, but its coverage is narrow next to a dedicated share-dealing broker, and it does not extend to ETFs, bonds or funds.
What you cannot do here at all: trade exchange-listed options or futures, buy bonds, or hold mutual funds. The broker lists 'Knockout options', but that is a leveraged barrier product and not a replacement for a real options book.
Account opening and funding
Onboarding is one of the smoother processes in the sector. Registration is fully digital, takes well under ten minutes, and verification is typically completed the same day using automated ID and address checks. You choose your entity by country of residence — this is not something you can pick freely, and it determines your compensation scheme.
The minimum deposit is USD/EUR/GBP 20 for cards, Apple Pay and PayPal, rising to 50 for a bank wire. That is a low barrier, and combined with an unlimited demo account it makes the platform easy to test properly before committing real money.
Supported funding methods cover bank transfer and SEPA, credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Skrill and Neteller. Base currencies include USD, EUR, GBP, PLN and AUD — pick your base currency carefully, because the 0.7% conversion markup applies to everything settled outside it. A European trader focused on US shares should think hard about whether a USD base account is worth the deposit-side conversion.
Deposits and withdrawals are both free. Card and e-wallet deposits land instantly; bank wires take one to three business days. Withdrawals typically clear in one to three business days and return to the original funding method. There is no fee, no monthly withdrawal allowance to ration, and no inactivity charge if you stop trading — though the broker may close a dormant account after six months.
Research and education
Education is where Capital.com clearly outperforms its peer group. Investmate, the broker's dedicated learning app, is a structured course library rather than a folder of PDFs — lessons are short, sequenced, and quizzed, and they cover risk and position sizing rather than just how to click buy. For someone genuinely new to leveraged trading, it is one of the better free resources any broker publishes.
That pairs with the trading-bias detector built into the platform, which analyses your own order history and flags recurring behavioural errors. Very few brokers will actively tell a customer they are overtrading, and the fact that this one does is a meaningful signal about how the product is positioned.
On the research side the offering is solid rather than exceptional. You get market news, an economic calendar, technical analysis summaries and in-house market commentary across FX, indices and commodities. Charting through the proprietary platform and TradingView is strong enough that most technical traders will not need a third-party subscription.
What is thinner is fundamental research. There are no analyst price targets, no equity research notes, and no screener that would satisfy someone building a stock thesis. That is coherent with the product — you are trading price direction on a CFD, not underwriting a company — but it does mean a fundamentally driven investor will be looking elsewhere for inputs.
Customer support
Support runs 24/7, which is more generous than the 24/5 standard across most of the CFD industry and matters if you hold crypto CFD positions over a weekend. Contact routes are live chat, email and phone.
Live chat is the fastest path and is usually answered within a couple of minutes. In practice the first-line agents handle account, funding and platform questions competently; more technical queries about margin calculation, overnight funding formulas or entity-specific protections often need escalation, which adds a day or so.
Language coverage is broad — English, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Polish, Arabic, Dutch, Romanian and Czech among others — which reflects the broker's European footprint and is a real advantage for DACH clients who would rather not conduct a margin dispute in English.
The self-service help centre is well organised and unusually specific about fee mechanics, including worked examples of overnight funding and guaranteed-stop pricing. That is worth noting because it is exactly the documentation most CFD brokers keep vague.
Public sentiment is broadly positive: Capital.com carries roughly a 4-star Trustpilot rating across a large review base of around 15,000 reviews, with recurring praise for withdrawal speed and app usability. The recurring complaints, as with any leveraged broker, cluster around margin closeouts and verification delays — read those with the understanding that a stop-out is often the product working as designed rather than a service failure.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The UK entity, Capital Com (UK) Limited, is authorised by the FCA under reference 793714, with FSCS cover up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant. European clients are served by Capital Com SV Investments Limited under CySEC licence 319/17, covered by the Investor Compensation Fund up to EUR 20,000. There is also an ASIC-licensed Australian entity (AFSL 513393). Which entity holds your account depends on your country of residence, and that determines which compensation scheme applies to you.
On CFDs, yes — there is no separate commission on any instrument. But 'commission-free' is not 'cost-free'. You pay the bid/ask spread on every trade (EUR/USD averages about 0.7 pips), overnight funding on any leveraged position held past the daily cut-off, and a 0.7% currency conversion markup whenever a trade settles outside your account's base currency. For most traders the conversion fee is the largest of the three, and it is the one most often overlooked.
No. Capital.com does not charge an inactivity fee, which genuinely distinguishes it from many CySEC-regulated competitors that bill USD 10 per month after as little as 90 days. The broker does reserve the right to close an account that has seen no trading activity for six months (twelve months under its Bahamas entity), but it will not quietly drain a dormant balance in monthly charges.
Both, but not equally. The core product is CFDs — leveraged contracts where you never own the underlying. Separately, Capital.com Invest offers commission-free dealing in around 1,000 real US and European shares, quoted directly from the exchange with no added markup, available in selected European countries. It is a genuine share-dealing account, but its coverage is narrow compared with a dedicated investing broker, and it does not extend to ETFs, bonds or funds.
The minimum is USD/EUR/GBP 20 when funding by card, Apple Pay or PayPal, and 50 by bank wire. Both deposits and withdrawals are free of charge. Card and e-wallet deposits are effectively instant; bank wires take one to three business days. Withdrawals normally clear within one to three business days and are returned to the original funding method, with no monthly limit on how many free withdrawals you can make.
Anyone building a long-term portfolio. There are no exchange-traded options or futures, no bonds, no mutual funds, and no tax-wrapped accounts — the product set is overwhelmingly leveraged CFDs, where overnight funding of roughly 4% a year over benchmark makes buy-and-hold structurally expensive. Residents of the US, Canada, Japan, Belgium and Hong Kong are not accepted, and UK retail clients cannot trade the crypto CFDs. As with all CFD brokers, the majority of retail accounts here lose money.
