Our verdict
OANDA is the broker to choose when counterparty quality and product polish matter more than shaving the last half-pip. Six top-tier licences, a thirty-year record, no minimum deposit, an outstanding mobile app and a research operation that is the best of the three brokers in this comparison make it the natural pick for a beginner, a part-time trader, or anyone in a market where Pepperstone and IC Markets simply cannot onboard them - the US, Canada and Japan among them. Anyone trading frequently should think twice. The default spread-only EUR/USD spread has been measured at 1.4 to 1.7 pips against roughly 0.8 pips at the raw-spread brokers, and closing that gap means qualifying for core pricing at a reported USD 10,000 balance. Add a 1.0 percent currency conversion mark-up and an inactivity fee of up to USD 20 a month after twelve dormant months, and OANDA becomes an expensive place to run high volume or to leave money idle.

Pros & cons
Pros
8- Regulated by six tier-1 authorities - CFTC/NFA, FCA (542574), CIRO, ASIC (AFSL 412981), MAS and the JFSA - a licence footprint almost nobody in retail FX matches
- Trading since 1996, with client money segregated and FSCS cover up to GBP 85,000 for UK clients and CIPF cover up to CAD 1,000,000 in Canada
- No minimum deposit at all - you can open and fund a live account with any amount you choose
- The mobile app is the strongest in this comparison set: full order management, alerts and charting rather than a cut-down position viewer
- Research rated 5 out of 5 by ForexBrokers.com - MarketPulse commentary, Autochartist integration, news feeds and podcasts, all in-house rather than bought in
- Share CFD commission of 0.06 percent of notional per side with no minimum, which is cheap on small tickets where per-order minimums usually bite
- Open REST and streaming API through Algo Labs, with no punitive volume threshold attached
- Available to US, Canadian and Japanese residents, who cannot open accounts at most global CFD brokers
Cons
6- The default spread-only account is expensive: EUR/USD has been measured at 1.4 to 1.7 pips against roughly 0.8 pips all-in at raw-spread competitors
- Core pricing closes most of that gap but is reported to require a USD 10,000 balance, so the cheap tariff is not available to the clients who need it most
- A 1.0 percent currency conversion mark-up applies whenever the instrument currency differs from your account currency - the largest hidden cost in this review
- Inactivity fee of up to USD 20 a month - GBP 20 at the UK entity - after twelve months without an open or active position, though up to three months are refundable once you trade again
- No options, no futures and no mutual funds; outside the EU no share ownership either (the EU entity, OANDA TMS Brokers S.A., offers real shares and ETFs, held by a custodian in an omnibus account in OANDA TMS's name) - and the product list varies so much by entity that US clients get forex and spot crypto only
- Support is 24/5 rather than 24/7, with narrower language coverage than the Australian competitors

Full review: OANDA
Fees and what they actually cost
OANDA is not a cheap broker on its default settings, and the honest way to read its pricing is to work out which tariff you will actually be on.
Spread-only is the account you get by default. There is no commission; everything sits in the spread. OANDA advertises EUR/USD from 0.6 pips, but that is a best-case print. ForexBrokers.com measured a 1.68 to 1.69 pip average across 2026 testing, and BestBrokers put it at 1.4 pips. Against roughly 0.8 pips all-in at Pepperstone or IC Markets, that is a gap of one full pip per round turn - USD 10 per standard lot, every trade.
Core pricing + commission narrows it substantially: spreads from 0.0 to 0.4 pips plus commission. Read the commission carefully, because it is charged per side: OANDA's US help centre states 0.70 USD per 10,000 units on each leg of a trade, which is USD 7 per 100,000 to open and USD 7 again to close. That is USD 14 round turn, or 1.4 pips on EUR/USD before the spread — so the all-in cost is roughly 1.4 to 1.8 pips, not the sub-pip figure the headline invites. Singapore is cheaper at USD 3 per 100,000 per side, USD 6 round turn. OANDA states a USD 10,000 minimum balance to qualify, so the cheaper tariff is gated behind capital rather than open to everyone. The UK entity publishes spread-only pricing and has no core-pricing account at all.
Away from FX the picture is better. Share CFDs cost 0.06 percent of position notional per side on US, UK, French, German and Spanish listings, rising to 0.08 percent on Belgian, Danish, Finnish, Dutch, Portuguese and Swedish names, with no minimum commission. That last point matters: a EUR 2,000 share CFD costs EUR 1.20 per side here, where a broker with a EUR 5 minimum would charge four times as much. Index CFDs start at 1.0 point on the UK 100 and 1.2 points on Germany 40.
Two non-trading fees deserve attention. Currency conversion is charged at 1.0 percent mark-up or mark-down on the mid-market rate whenever the instrument currency differs from your account currency. Trade US shares from a EUR account and that 1 percent dwarfs the 0.06 percent commission. And an inactivity fee of up to USD 20 a month kicks in after 365 days without an open or active position - GBP 20 a month at the UK entity. It is taken on the third-to-last business day of the month, is not charged while a position is open, never pushes the balance below zero, and up to three monthly charges are refunded if you resume trading. Deposits and withdrawals are free at OANDA Europe Limited; the BVI entity charges USD 20 per bank wire. Figures above are the OANDA Europe Limited (FCA) schedule unless stated.
Safety and regulation
This is where OANDA earns its keep. Eight regulated entities, six of them under first-tier supervisors, is a footprint that almost nobody in retail FX matches.
- OANDA Corporation - CFTC and NFA, member ID 0325821. The US entity. Note that US retail forex carries no compensation scheme at all: net capital rules and segregated depositories, but no insurance behind the balance.
- OANDA Europe Limited - FCA, firm reference 542574. UK clients get FSCS cover up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant if the firm fails.
- OANDA TMS Brokers S.A. - KNF, Poland, permit KPWiG-4021-54-1/2004. This is OANDA's EU entity: EU clients, German and Austrian residents included, contract with it. OANDA moved its EU business here when OANDA Europe Markets Ltd in Malta (MFSA) closed on 17 March 2023. If the firm fails, the Polish compensation scheme run by KDPW covers up to EUR 22,000 of covered funds, paid in PLN at 100% up to EUR 3,000 and 90% above that.
- OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC - CIRO, with CIPF cover up to CAD 1,000,000 for general accounts.
- OANDA Australia Pty Ltd - ASIC, AFSL 412981.
- OANDA Asia Pacific Pte Ltd - MAS, Capital Markets Services licence, company registration 200704926K.
- OANDA Japan Co., Ltd. - JFSA via the Kanto Local Finance Bureau, No. 2137.
- OANDA Global Markets Ltd - BVI FSC, SIBA/L/20/1130. The offshore entity, and the one to be conscious of if you are routed there.
The firm has operated since 1996 and runs offices across New York, Toronto, London, Gzira, Warsaw, Krakow, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo and the BVI. Client funds are segregated and retail clients in regulated jurisdictions get negative balance protection - though US retail forex rules do not mandate it.
OANDA is privately held rather than listed, so you get regulatory transparency but not quarterly public accounts. A licence is oversight, not a guarantee; leveraged trading remains capable of losing you the entire balance regardless of who supervises the firm.
Trading platforms
OANDA is one of very few FX brokers whose own software is worth using in preference to MetaTrader.
OANDA Trade on the web is a proper proprietary platform: depth of market, a premium indicator pack including order book and position ratio data, integrated news and Autochartist signals, and clean order management. It is not as configurable as cTrader and the research tools have an irritating habit of opening in separate windows rather than docking, which ForexBrokers.com singles out as a workflow weakness, but the core trading experience is solid.
The mobile app is the standout. It is genuinely one of the best in retail FX - full order entry and modification, watchlists, alerts, real charting and account analytics, all in an interface that does not feel like a desktop platform crushed into a phone. If you trade primarily from mobile, OANDA is the strongest choice of the three brokers reviewed here by a clear margin.
MetaTrader 4 is available at most entities with expert-advisor support and VPS hosting. MetaTrader 5 is offered in selected regions only, so verify it exists for your entity before you build a strategy around it. TradingView integration covers US, UK and Canadian clients.
For automation, Algo Labs exposes a documented REST and streaming API without the nine-figure volume gate that some competitors impose - a real advantage for a developer running a modest systematic strategy who does not want to work inside MetaTrader.
The one thing you will not find is a Level II ladder as deep or as configurable as cTrader's, so pure order-flow scalpers will feel constrained.
Markets and products
The single most important thing to understand about OANDA's product range is that it depends almost entirely on which entity you sign with.
Everywhere: 68 plus major and minor currency pairs. This is the constant, and the pricing and depth here are what OANDA is known for.
UK, EU, Australia, Singapore: the full CFD shelf - over 1,500 share CFDs across US, UK and European listings, ETF CFDs, index CFDs, commodities, precious metals and bond CFDs. UK clients can trade the same book as spread bets with UK tax treatment.
United States: spot forex and spot crypto only. CFDs are illegal for US retail clients, so an American opening an OANDA account gets a fundamentally narrower product than a British one. Crypto CFDs are separately unavailable to UK retail clients under FCA rules.
Across all entities there are no listed options, no exchange-traded futures, no mutual funds and no fractional shares. Outside the EU - at OANDA Europe Limited in the UK, for example - the share and ETF instruments are, as with every CFD provider here, contracts for difference rather than owned securities: price exposure and a dividend adjustment, but no holding in your name, no vote, and nothing transferable to another broker.
The EU entity, OANDA TMS Brokers S.A., is the exception. Alongside its CFD account it offers a separate Stocks account with real exchange-traded shares and ETFs; OANDA says that through it "you gain access to real stocks from numerous global markets". You add it in the Client Zone after opening a trading account, and OANDA TMS offers the Stocks service in cross-selling together with its CFD service. The shares are not registered in your own name at the custodian: they sit in an omnibus account kept by a foreign custodian, the holder of that account is OANDA TMS, and OANDA TMS keeps a register of the clients for whom it holds them. Its information sheet warns that this brings additional risks, in particular the risk of the custodian's bankruptcy or liquidation. The Stocks fee table effective 1 July 2026 lists EUR 250 for transferring the shares to an account outside OANDA TMS.
Copy trading is available through OANDA's integrations. The overall breadth is respectable but not exceptional - the reason to be here is the quality of the FX operation and the licences behind it, not the length of the instrument list.
Account opening and funding
Opening is straightforward and there is no capital barrier at all. The minimum deposit is zero - you can fund a live account with whatever amount you actually intend to risk, which is a genuinely useful feature for anyone stepping across from a demo and wanting to trade small first. The application is online, needs an identity document, proof of address and a suitability questionnaire, and is normally approved within one business day.
The exception is core pricing. To move off the expensive spread-only tariff you need to qualify, and ForexBrokers.com reports a USD 10,000 balance requirement. That inverts the usual logic: the account with no minimum deposit gives you the worst spreads, and the good spreads need five figures.
Funding covers bank transfer and SEPA, Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, and the Skrill and Neteller e-wallets. Cards credit instantly, bank transfers take one to three business days, and withdrawals return to source over one to three business days. OANDA Europe Limited charges nothing for either deposits or withdrawals; the BVI entity charges USD 20 per bank wire, and your own bank may add its own charge on an international transfer.
Base currency choice is entity-dependent - USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, JPY, SGD and HKD appear across the group, but not every entity offers every one. Choose carefully at signup, because with a 1.0 percent conversion mark-up in play, holding the wrong base currency is the most expensive avoidable mistake you can make at this broker.
Research and education
Research is OANDA's second real advantage after regulation, and it is not close. ForexBrokers.com rates it 5 out of 5.
MarketPulse is a staffed publication rather than a content-marketing blog: daily currency and commodity analysis, central bank previews and post-mortems, and named analysts who take positions and then revisit them. The Trade Tap blog covers shorter-form market notes. Autochartist is integrated for automated pattern and volatility analysis. On top of that sit live news feeds, an economic calendar, position-ratio and order-book data through the premium indicator pack, and a podcast series.
The one structural annoyance is integration: research tools frequently open in separate windows instead of docking into the platform, so the workflow is clunkier than the content quality deserves.
Education is decent without being distinctive - rated 4 out of 5 by the same reviewer. There are webinars, a Learn section covering leverage, order types and risk management, and a set of introductory guides. What it lacks is depth and video volume relative to the category leaders, and the newer Learn material is described as thin. For a broker whose no-minimum-deposit policy actively attracts beginners, that is a missed opportunity.
The demo account is unlimited and mirrors live pricing, including the spread-only tariff you would actually be charged - which makes it more useful for cost planning than most demos.
Customer support
Support is competent rather than exceptional, and it is the one operational area where OANDA is beaten by both Australian competitors in this comparison.
Cover is 24 hours a day, five days a week - the FX market week - via phone, email and live chat. That is standard for the category but noticeably behind IC Markets and Pepperstone, both of which staff at least partial weekend cover. If a funding problem lands on a Saturday, you are waiting for Monday.
Language coverage runs to English, German, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese and Polish, reflecting the entity structure - the Japanese and Polish desks exist because OANDA Japan and OANDA TMS Brokers are separately licensed local operations. That is narrower than the nine or ten languages the Australian brokers staff, but the coverage that exists is native rather than translated.
Where OANDA does well is the quality of a written answer. Questions about entity structure, tax treatment, the conversion mark-up and financing calculations tend to get precise, documented responses rather than a link to a generic FAQ - which is what you would hope for from a firm that has been supervised by the CFTC and the FCA for as long as this one has.
Higher-touch service arrives with the Premium and Premium Plus tiers, which add relationship management alongside volume rebates. At ordinary retail size, expect solid self-service documentation and a chat queue that moves at a reasonable pace on weekdays.
Frequently asked questions
Because you are almost certainly on the spread-only tariff, where all cost is built into the quote and no commission is charged separately. Measured EUR/USD averages on that account run 1.4 to 1.7 pips, against roughly 0.8 pips all-in on a raw-spread account elsewhere. OANDA's core pricing tariff quotes from 0.0 to 0.4 pips plus USD 7 per 100,000 **per side** — USD 14 round turn, which works out at roughly 1.4 to 1.8 pips all-in and is mid-table rather than cheap. OANDA also states a USD 10,000 balance requirement to access it. If you trade often, a raw-spread broker will be cheaper either way.
Yes. OANDA Corporation charges up to USD 20 per month, and OANDA Europe Limited up to GBP 20, once an account has gone 365 days without an open or active position. It is debited on the third-to-last business day of the month, is not charged while a position is open and never pushes the balance below zero, and up to three monthly charges are refunded if you resume trading. It will still quietly drain a small dormant account, so if you are stepping away for a year, withdraw the balance rather than leaving it parked.
Yes. OANDA Corporation is registered with the CFTC and is an NFA member, ID 0325821, which is why OANDA is one of the few genuinely global brokers available to Americans. What US clients can trade is much narrower: spot forex on 68 plus pairs and spot crypto only. CFDs are prohibited for US retail clients, so no share CFDs, no index CFDs and no commodities CFDs. Leverage is capped by the CFTC at 50:1 on majors and 20:1 on everything else, and US retail forex accounts carry no compensation scheme.
OANDA Europe Limited applies a 1.0 percent mark-up or mark-down to the mid-market exchange rate whenever you trade an instrument denominated in a currency other than your account currency. In practice this is the largest hidden cost at the broker: on a US share CFD held in a EUR account, that 1 percent dwarfs the 0.06 percent trading commission. The way to avoid it is to hold your account in the currency you trade in most, which is why the base-currency choice at signup matters more here than at most brokers.
It depends on your residence. UK clients contract with OANDA Europe Limited under FCA reference 542574 with FSCS cover up to GBP 85,000. EU clients, including German and Austrian residents, contract with OANDA TMS Brokers S.A. in Poland under KNF authorisation KPWiG-4021-54-1/2004; the Polish compensation scheme run by KDPW covers up to EUR 22,000 of covered funds, paid in PLN at 100% up to EUR 3,000 and 90% above that. OANDA Europe Markets Ltd in Malta, which used to serve EU clients, closed on 17 March 2023. Canadians go to OANDA (Canada) Corporation ULC under CIRO with CIPF cover up to CAD 1,000,000. US clients face OANDA Corporation with no compensation scheme at all. Check the entity named in your client agreement, because the protection differs enormously between them.
It is one of the better options, with caveats. There is no minimum deposit, the mobile app is the easiest to learn of the three brokers reviewed here, the research is genuinely excellent, and the licence footprint means a beginner is dealing with a supervised counterparty in almost every major market. Against that: the default spreads are the widest in this comparison, the education is thinner than the beginner-friendly positioning implies, and the inactivity fee punishes exactly the tentative user who opens an account and then hesitates. Start on the unlimited demo, which mirrors live pricing, before funding.
