Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

Our verdict
ActivTrades is the sensible middle of the CFD market. Twenty-five years of trading history, an FCA licence dating to 2005, segregated client money and a Lloyd's excess-of-loss policy worth up to USD 1,000,000 per claimant add up to a stronger safety story than most of the firms it competes with - with the twist that the published policy covers the offshore entities rather than the FCA-regulated one, so it is the clients with no compensation scheme behind them who actually gain from it, and the commercial terms are genuinely friction-free: nothing to open, nothing to deposit, nothing to withdraw, and no charge until an account has been idle for a full year. What you give up is price and depth. The spread-only model means a measured EUR/USD average of about 1.08 pips on the standard account, which is comfortably more than a raw-spread rival charges all-in, and the 0.5 percent conversion fee is a real cost for anyone trading US names out of a EUR or GBP account. The product shelf is CFDs and nothing else - no options, no exchange-traded futures, no funds, no share ownership - and the education library is thin and badly organised. Choose ActivTrades if you want a long-established, well-insured broker with an unusually clean fee sheet. Choose someone else if your edge is measured in tenths of a pip.

Pros & cons
Pros
7- FCA licence 434413 held since 2005, plus a CMVM-regulated EU entity, an SCB entity and a Brazilian brokerage - one of the longest continuous track records in retail CFDs
- Excess-of-loss cover at Lloyd's of London pays up to USD 1,000,000 per claimant on an insolvency - and it covers the offshore entities, which is where clients have no compensation scheme at all; UK clients have FSCS cover of GBP 85,000 instead
- No minimum deposit at all on the standard account, and no deposit or withdrawal fee on any published method
- Four platforms on one account - ActivTrader, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView - with the SmartOrder, SmartLines and SmartPattern add-ons bundled into MetaTrader
- Four base currencies including CHF, which is rare and removes a conversion round trip for Swiss clients
- Support runs 24/5 in roughly fourteen languages with a published average email response time of about 27 minutes
- UK clients can trade the same book as spread bets, which changes the tax treatment of gains in the UK
Cons
6- 82 percent of ActivTrades retail accounts lose money on CFDs - the highest disclosed rate among the fourteen FCA-regulated CFD brokers surveyed by The Investors Centre in 2026, against a 69.9 percent mean
- Spread-only pricing is not cheap for active traders: ForexBrokers.com measured a 1.08 pip EUR/USD monthly average on the standard account, versus roughly 0.8 pips all-in at raw-spread competitors
- A 0.5 percent currency conversion fee applies whenever an instrument settles outside your base currency, which quietly taxes every US share CFD held in a EUR or GBP account
- Education is limited and poorly structured - archived webinars and roughly seventy articles folded into the research section rather than a course path
- Everything is a CFD. No listed options, no exchange-traded futures, no mutual funds, no fractional shares and no share ownership of any kind
- The Luxembourg entity was fined EUR 14,000 by the CSSF in December 2024 for AML and counter-terrorist-financing failings, including training written for UK rules and applied unchanged in Luxembourg

| Stocks (per order) | in the spread | Share CFDs carry no separate commission at ActivTrades - the entire cost is the dealing spread, which widens well beyond the headline FX pricing on smaller names. Because there is no commission line, the cost of a share trade is not quoted in advance the way a percentage schedule would quote it. |
| US stocks | in the spread | US share CFDs are priced the same way as every other share CFD: spread only, no commission, no per-share charge. Non-US clients trade them as CFDs; ActivTrades does not offer US-listed shares for actual custody. |
| ETFs | in the spread | ETF CFDs are commission-free and priced through the spread. There is no ETF savings plan and no fund holding - you never own the ETF, so accumulation and distribution mechanics do not apply. |
| Options (per contract) | n/a | ActivTrades offers no listed or OTC options. |

ActivTrades also advertises 'enhanced insurance up to USD 1,000,000', but both its own funds-protection page and the evidence of cover attribute that policy to ActivTrades Corp and the other offshore entities, not to ActivTrades PLC - so a UK client contracting here should treat the FSCS figure as their cover. Older secondary reporting describes a separate excess-of-FSCS arrangement for UK clients; we could not confirm it or any current limit from a primary source, so no figure is recorded. Recorded regulatory actions
2024 · CSSF€14,000
Luxembourg's CSSF fined ActivTrades Europe SA EUR 14,000 on 24 December 2024, made public in April 2025, for anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing failings found in an on-site inspection - including staff training built on UK rules rather than Luxembourg law and gaps in customer due diligence. The entity had already ceased activity on 1 January 2024, moved its clients to another group company, and was struck from the CSSF list in October 2024.
2011 · FSA (now FCA)£85,750
The Financial Services Authority fined ActivTrades Plc GBP 85,750 on 15 March 2011 for breaching Principles 3 and 10 and the client-asset rules between April 2009 and September 2010: client money was not properly segregated and at times sat in the firm's own bank accounts, reconciliations and calculations were late or wrong, and interest on client money was not passed on. Average client money held was GBP 12.2 million. The penalty already reflects a 30 percent early-settlement discount; the pre-discount figure was GBP 122,500. No client lost money, the firm cooperated and the failings were remediated - but this is the only published action against the FCA entity itself, and it goes to the very control the firm now markets as a strength.
Regulation and investor compensation reduce risk, they do not remove it. No broker is guaranteed safe.

Full review: ActivTrades
Fees and what they actually cost
ActivTrades runs one pricing model and applies it to almost everything: no commission, all cost in the spread. That makes the fee sheet easy to read and harder to optimise.
On EUR/USD the broker advertises spreads from 0.5 pips. What you actually pay is wider. ForexBrokers.com measured a 1.08 pip monthly average on the standard account in October 2025, and separately recorded an all-in figure of about 0.92 pips on ActivTrades commission-based pricing where that is offered. Against a raw-spread competitor charging roughly 0.8 pips all-in, ActivTrades is a fifth to a third more expensive per round turn on the most liquid pair in the world. On a single standard lot that is a few dollars; on fifty lots a month it is the difference between two brokers.
Index and commodity CFDs are also commission-free, with the FTSE 100 quoted from 0.6 points. Share CFDs, ETF CFDs and bond CFDs carry no commission line either, which sounds generous until you notice that it means the cost is never quoted to you in advance the way a percentage schedule would quote it - you find out what a share CFD costs by looking at the spread on the ticket.
Two named fees matter. The first is currency conversion at 0.5 percent, charged whenever a position settles in a currency other than your account base currency. Trade US share CFDs out of a EUR account and you pay it on every realised result. The second is the inactivity fee: GBP or EUR 10 per month, starting after eighteen months without activity, charged only while a positive balance remains and never able to push the balance below zero. That is a milder version of the fee than most competitors levy.
Everything else on the sheet is a zero. No account fee, no platform fee, no deposit fee, no withdrawal fee, no minimum deposit. Overnight financing applies to leveraged positions held past the daily rollover, and the weekend rollover is charged at three times the daily rate - the standard convention, and the reason a Friday-to-Monday hold costs more than a Tuesday-to-Wednesday one.
Safety and regulation
This is the reason to shortlist ActivTrades, and it is worth reading the structure rather than the marketing.
- ActivTrades PLC - FCA firm reference 434413, London. UK retail clients and spread betting clients contract here and are covered by the FSCS up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant if the firm fails. ActivTrades also buys excess-of-loss cover at Lloyd's of London, and publishes the evidence of cover - which is worth reading closely, because it does not say what the marketing implies. The insured parties are the three offshore companies, not ActivTrades PLC: ActivTrades Corp (Bahamas, underwritten by ARCH 2012 and AXA XL 2003, cover running to 31 May 2027), ActivTrades Markets Ltd (Mauritius, ARCH 2012 and Kiln 510, to 31 December 2026) and ActivTrades International Ltd (St Vincent, ARCH 2012, to 14 October 2026). Each pays up to USD 1,000,000 per claimant if an insolvency event occurs during the policy period, and each carries a retention: the claimant bears whatever the estate distributes to them, subject to a minimum of USD 10,000. So the first USD 10,000 of loss is yours, the policy is denominated in dollars rather than pounds, and it protects precisely the clients who have no statutory scheme - which is a genuinely unusual thing for a CFD broker to buy, just not the FSCS top-up it is often described as.
- ActivMarkets - Empresa de Investimento, S.A. - CMVM registration 433, Portugal. This is the group's EU entity and where continental European clients are onboarded, with the Portuguese investor compensation scheme covering eligible claims to EUR 25,000.
- ActivTrades Corp - Securities Commission of The Bahamas, SIA-F193. The offshore entity, and the one that offers 1:200 leverage on an individual account.
- ActivTrades CCTVM Ltda - licensed by the Banco Central do Brasil and supervised by the CVM. Brazilian residents face a USD 500 minimum deposit.
- ActivTrades Markets Ltd - Financial Services Commission Mauritius, licence GB24203277. The Mauritius entity named in the group's own legal disclosures, and one of the three companies covered by the Lloyd's policy.
Client money is held segregated from company funds at recognised institutions, retail clients get negative balance protection, and the firm has been trading continuously since 2001.
Three caveats belong in the same paragraph as the insurance. ActivTrades is privately held, so you get regulatory oversight rather than the disclosure a listed broker is forced into. And in December 2024 the Luxembourg regulator fined ActivTrades Europe SA EUR 14,000 for AML and counter-terrorist-financing failings found on inspection - among them delivering staff training built on UK rules without adapting it to Luxembourg law. The fine is small and the entity had already stopped trading, but it is a governance signal, not a rounding error. And earlier, in March 2011, the FSA fined ActivTrades Plc GBP 85,750 for failing to segregate client money properly between April 2009 and September 2010 — money at times sat in the firm's own bank accounts, reconciliations were late or wrong, and interest was not passed on. No client lost money and the failings were remediated, but it is the only published action against the FCA entity itself and it goes to the very control this paragraph opened by praising. No licence and no insurance policy makes any broker risk-free.
Trading platforms
Four platforms, one account, and an unusually honest division of labour between them.
ActivTrader is the in-house browser platform and the one most clients start on. It is clean, fast and built around risk management: position sizing, one-click trading, integrated client sentiment showing how ActivTrades customers are positioned in an instrument, and a straightforward alert system. The recurring criticism, and it is fair, is chart customisation - indicator configuration and drawing tools are shallower than a trader coming from MetaTrader will expect.
MetaTrader 4 and 5 cover that gap and carry the automation load. ActivTrades bundles its SmartTools pack into both: SmartOrder for one-click order management, SmartLines for trendline-triggered execution, SmartForecast for statistical projections and SmartPattern for chart-pattern recognition. Those are genuine additions rather than repackaged indicators, and they are the reason a MetaTrader-native trader would pick ActivTrades over a broker offering stock MT4.
TradingView integration lets you route ActivTrades orders from TradingView charts. If ActivTrader's charting is the weak point, this is the fix, and it costs nothing extra.
The ActivTrader mobile app is a full trading client, not a position checker - complete order management, alerts, the sentiment indicator and account administration. Reviewers consistently rate the mobile experience above the desktop charting.
What is missing is a native FIX or REST API for systematic traders who want to route from their own infrastructure. Automation here means expert advisors on MetaTrader, and that is the ceiling.
Markets and products
Roughly 1,000 to 1,270 tradable symbols depending on which entity and platform you count, spread across seven CFD groups.
- Forex - about 49 pairs covering majors, minors and the usual exotics. This is where pricing is tightest and where most of the volume sits.
- Share CFDs - approximately 1,000 underlying shares from the US, UK and Europe. No US-listed custody, no fractional units.
- ETF CFDs - a modest list, priced like shares.
- Indices - 19 global benchmarks, with the FTSE 100 from 0.6 points.
- Commodities - more than 20 markets across energy, metals and softs. Reviewers consistently flag ActivTrades commodity spreads as wide relative to its FX pricing, so check the ticket before assuming the FX quality carries across.
- Bond CFDs - government bond derivatives, which is a product several competitors do not carry at all.
- Crypto CFDs - available through the non-UK entities; FCA rules block UK retail access to crypto derivatives.
The absences define the broker. There are no listed options, no exchange-traded futures, no mutual funds, no fractional shares, and no share ownership in any form. An ActivTrades position in Nestle is a contract with ActivTrades over the price of Nestle - you get the price move and a dividend adjustment, not the security, not a vote, and nothing you can transfer to another broker.
Copy trading is also absent. Where a competitor ships a native social layer, ActivTrades ships SmartTools and sentiment data and expects you to make your own decisions. Whether that is a gap or a mercy depends entirely on your view of copy trading.
Account opening and funding
Onboarding is fully digital and rarely takes more than a business day. You supply an identity document and proof of address, answer an appropriateness questionnaire about your trading experience, and declare source of funds. Under FCA and EU rules that questionnaire is a real gate: answering it dishonestly to unlock access is how people end up in products they do not understand, and failing it means refusal rather than a downgrade.
The commercial terms at this stage are the best part of the account. There is no minimum deposit - you can fund with a single unit of currency and trade a micro lot while you decide whether you like the platform. The exceptions are residents of Brazil and China, who face a USD 500 minimum. Four base currencies are available: EUR, GBP, USD and CHF. The CHF option is genuinely uncommon in this category and saves Swiss clients a conversion on every deposit, withdrawal and settlement.
Funding covers bank transfer and SEPA, Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Sofort, Apple Pay and Google Pay - around ten routes in total. Cards and e-wallets credit within minutes; bank transfers take 24 to 48 hours. ActivTrades charges nothing on deposits or withdrawals on any published method, and withdrawals return to the funding source, typically clearing the same day to two business days once identity checks are complete.
The cost that is easy to miss is the 0.5 percent conversion charge on any position settling outside your base currency. Pick the base currency that matches the instruments you actually trade, not the one that matches your bank account, and you will avoid paying it repeatedly.
Research and education
Research is adequate and unambitious. ActivTrades publishes weekly market outlooks, regular written analysis and a Monday webinar, and the tone is professional rather than promotional. The SmartForecast and SmartPattern tools inside MetaTrader add a quantitative layer - statistical projections and automated chart-pattern detection - and the client sentiment indicator inside ActivTrader is a genuinely useful contrarian input, showing how the broker's own customer base is positioned in an instrument. What is missing is volume and cadence. ForexBrokers.com puts it plainly: the quantity of content trails what the strongest brokers in the category publish, and there is no in-house analyst desk producing the daily flow that a serious macro trader would want.
Education is the weakest part of the whole proposition, and it should be said without hedging. What exists is an archive of past webinars and roughly seventy explainer articles, and those articles are mixed into the research section rather than organised into anything a beginner could follow. There is no graded course path, no progress tracking, no interactive modules and no quizzes. ForexBrokers.com describes the educational content as limited and poorly structured, and rates it 3.5 out of 5 against an overall 4.0 - one of the lower marks the broker receives.
That matters more here than it would at a broker with a 60 percent loss rate. Eighty-two percent of ActivTrades retail accounts lose money on CFDs. A firm publishing that number and offering a disorganised article archive as its answer to trader education is not meeting the moment. The demo account is free, unlimited and mirrors live pricing - use it, and learn the mechanics of leverage somewhere with a real curriculum before you fund a live account.
Customer support
Support is one of the areas where twenty-five years of operating history shows. ActivTrades staffs its desk 24 hours a day, five days a week, in roughly fourteen languages, and publishes an average email response time of about 27 minutes - a specific, checkable claim that most competitors decline to make. Three channels are open: telephone, email and live chat, plus a scheduled callback service during European business hours for anyone who would rather book a conversation than wait in a queue.
Language coverage includes English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, Chinese and Arabic. The German and Italian desks are staffed operations rather than machine-translated FAQ pages, which matters if you are contracting with the Portuguese entity under CMVM supervision and would rather discuss margin in your own language.
Quality follows the pattern of the category. Account administration, verification, funding queries and platform problems are handled quickly and competently, and the Trustpilot record - around 4.5 out of 5 - is at the strong end for a CFD broker. Detailed questions about the exact swap calculation on a given instrument, or how the 0.5 percent conversion charge applies to a specific closed position, tend to end in a written follow-up rather than an immediate answer.
There is no dedicated relationship manager at ordinary account sizes. For most clients, live chat during a European session is the fastest route to a resolution, and the callback service is the right tool for anything that needs more than a two-line answer.
Frequently asked questions
ActivTrades has traded since 2001 under FCA firm reference 434413, holds client money in segregated accounts at recognised institutions, and gives retail clients negative balance protection. UK clients are covered by the FSCS up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant if the firm fails, ActivTrades additionally buys excess-of-loss insurance at Lloyd's of London worth up to USD 1,000,000 per claimant, but the published evidence of cover names the offshore companies - Corp, Markets and International - and not ActivTrades PLC, and the claimant carries the first USD 10,000 themselves. EU clients contract with the CMVM-regulated Portuguese entity and fall under Portugal's investor compensation scheme at EUR 25,000. None of that covers trading losses, and no arrangement makes any broker risk-free.
There is no commission - the cost is the spread. ActivTrades advertises EUR/USD from 0.5 pips, but ForexBrokers.com measured a 1.08 pip monthly average on the standard account in October 2025, which is what you should budget for. That is roughly a fifth to a third more expensive per round turn than a raw-spread broker charging about 0.8 pips all-in. If you trade a handful of lots a month the difference is trivial; if you trade fifty, it is the reason to compare.
Yes, but a mild one. After twelve consecutive months without account activity, ActivTrades charges GBP 10 or EUR 10 per month, and only while the account still holds a positive balance - the fee cannot push you into negative territory. Everything else is free: no account fee, no platform fee, no deposit fee, no withdrawal fee and no minimum deposit. If you plan to leave an account dormant, withdraw the balance rather than letting the monthly charge eat it.
No. Every instrument at ActivTrades is a contract for difference, including the roughly 1,000 share CFDs, the ETF CFDs and the bond CFDs. You get the price movement and a cash adjustment when the underlying pays a dividend, but you do not hold the security, you have no voting rights, and the position cannot be transferred to another broker. If you want shares registered in your name, you need a custody broker rather than a CFD provider.
82 percent of retail investor accounts lose money trading CFDs with ActivTrades, according to the disclosure on its FCA-regulated entity. That is the highest figure among the fourteen FCA-regulated CFD brokers surveyed by The Investors Centre in 2026, against a mean of 69.9 percent. Other ActivTrades entities and reporting periods have published lower numbers - 69, 71 and 74 percent have all appeared - because the disclosure is recalculated periodically and differs by entity. Check the warning on the page you actually open an account from.
It depends where you live. UK residents contract with ActivTrades PLC under FCA 434413, with FSCS cover. European clients contract with ActivMarkets - Empresa de Investimento, S.A. under CMVM registration 433 in Portugal. Most clients outside the UK, EU and Brazil are onboarded by ActivTrades Corp under Securities Commission of The Bahamas licence SIA-F193, which offers higher leverage but sits outside FSCS and EU compensation arrangements. Brazilian residents deal with ActivTrades CCTVM Ltda. Read the entity named in your client agreement before you fund the account, because the protection you get is the entity's, not the brand's.
