Our verdict
Shortlist Pepperstone if your P&L is sensitive to spread and commission and you already know which platform you want to trade on. An all-in EUR/USD cost of roughly 0.8 pips on the Razor account, no inactivity fee, no account-keeping fee, a USD 10 minimum first deposit and approval in four to eight hours make it one of the cheapest credible routes into FX and index CFDs from a firm supervised by the FCA, BaFin and ASIC. It is the wrong broker if you are building a long-term portfolio. There is no share ownership, no ETF savings plan, no options, no bonds and no funds, and overnight financing on index and share CFDs at 2.5 percent over the benchmark makes multi-month positions expensive by design. Beginners will also find the education thin: Pepperstone assumes you already know what a lot is and what happens when leverage moves against you.

- Scalping and day trading
- MetaTrader and cTrader users
- Index CFD trading
- UK spread betting

Pros & cons
Pros
8- Razor all-in EUR/USD cost of about 0.8 pips - a 0.0 to 0.1 pip raw spread plus USD 3.50 per lot per side
- No inactivity fee, no account-keeping fee and no account closure fee, confirmed on Pepperstone's own costs page
- Five execution venues on one account: MT4, MT5, cTrader, TradingView and the in-house Pepperstone Platform
- Three top-tier licences - FCA 684312, ASIC AFSL 414530 and BaFin 151148 - so most clients contract with a tier-1 supervised entity
- EUR, CHF and GBP accounts at every European entity (UK, Cyprus, Germany), which removes a layer of conversion cost for European clients
- Account approval typically inside 4-8 hours, with a USD 10 minimum first deposit and no minimum by bank transfer
- Active Trader rebates take the all-in EUR/USD cost down to roughly 0.26 pips at high volume
- UK clients get the same book as spread bets, with EUR/USD from 0.6 points
Cons
6- Everything is a CFD. You never own the share or ETF, so there are no voting rights, no transferable holdings and no dividend tax reclaim
- Overnight financing on index and share CFDs is charged at 2.5 percent over the benchmark rate, which quietly punishes anyone holding for more than a few weeks
- No options, futures, bonds or mutual funds - the product shelf is narrow next to a full-service broker
- Education is a webinar and article archive rather than a curriculum; ForexBrokers.com marks it down for having no interactive courses or quizzes
- FIX API access is reported to need around USD 250 million in monthly volume, so systematic traders are confined to MT4, MT5 or cTrader automation
- Pepperstone publishes no headline currency conversion rate, which makes the true cost of a US share CFD from a EUR account hard to model before you trade

Full review: Pepperstone
Fees and what they actually cost
Pepperstone runs two pricing models, and choosing between them is the single biggest cost decision you will make here.
Razor strips the mark-up out of the spread and charges commission instead. EUR/USD raw spreads sit at 0.0 to 0.1 pips and commission is USD 3.50 per standard lot per side on MT4 and MT5 - USD 7 round turn, worth about 0.7 pips on a one-lot EUR/USD trade. All-in you are paying roughly 0.8 pips. cTrader is cheaper at USD 6 round turn; TradingView and the Pepperstone Platform charge USD 7. In a EUR-denominated account the MT4/MT5 rate is a separately posted EUR 2.60 per lot per side — EUR 5.20 round turn — not a conversion of the dollar figure.
Standard folds commission into the spread: EUR/USD starts at 1.0 pip with nothing charged separately. Anyone trading a standard lot a month or more is better off on Razor.
Share CFDs are billed per side as a percentage of notional, and the rate follows the listing exchange: 0.10 percent on German and UK shares (minimum EUR 0.01 / GBP 0.01), 0.07 percent on Australian shares, 0.15 percent in Hong Kong, and USD 0.02 per share with a USD 0.02 minimum on US names. ETF CFDs sit on the same table rather than on a separate one: the US line reads "US share and ETF CFDs" and costs USD 0.02 per share, while German and UK-listed ETF CFDs cost 0.10 percent. Index and commodity CFDs carry no commission at all - the cost sits in the spread, with oil from 2 points and gold from 0.15 points on Standard.
The fee that catches people out is financing. Hold an index or share CFD overnight and Pepperstone applies closing price multiplied by trade size multiplied by 2.5 percent, divided by 360. That is trivial on a two-day swing trade and brutal on a six-month position.
The absence list is the good news: no inactivity fee, no account-keeping fee, no closure fee and no deposit fee. Withdrawals are free by card and e-wallet; an international bank wire costs GBP 15. All figures above are from the Pepperstone Ltd (FCA) schedule - the Australian and Cyprus entities differ in detail.
Safety and regulation
Pepperstone runs seven separate licences, and which one you get depends entirely on where you live. That matters far more than the headline count.
- Pepperstone Limited - FCA, firm reference 684312. UK clients are covered by the FSCS up to GBP 85,000 per eligible claimant if the firm fails. That covers firm failure, not trading losses.
- Pepperstone GmbH - BaFin, licence 151148. German clients contract here and fall under the EdW scheme, which pays 90 percent of a claim capped at EUR 20,000.
- Pepperstone EU Limited - CySEC 388/20, with Investor Compensation Fund cover of 90 percent of a covered claim up to EUR 20,000.
- Pepperstone Group Limited - ASIC, AFSL 414530. Australia has no statutory compensation scheme for broker failure.
- Pepperstone Financial Services (DIFC) Limited - DFSA F004356.
- Pepperstone Markets Limited - Securities Commission of The Bahamas, SIA-F217. This is the offshore entity, and it is where the 200:1 leverage lives.
- Pepperstone Markets Kenya Limited - CMA licence 128.
Client money is held in segregated accounts, and retail clients in the regulated jurisdictions get negative balance protection - you cannot lose more than your account balance. Accept professional classification in the UK or EU and you surrender that protection in exchange for higher leverage. Read that trade-off before you tick the box.
Pepperstone is privately held and was founded in 2010. Its UK entity files audited accounts at Companies House and the Australian entity lodges audited statements with ASIC, so the numbers can be read — but once a year, on a filing delay, and without the running disclosure a listed broker owes its shareholders. You get regulatory oversight rather than public-market transparency, which is a real gap versus a listed competitor. No licence makes any broker risk-free.
Trading platforms
This is Pepperstone's strongest suit: one account, five ways to trade it, and none of them a stripped-down version of the others.
cTrader is the pick for serious discretionary traders - full Level II depth of market, native cAlgo automation in C#, granular partial-fill handling, and the cheapest commission tier at USD 6 round turn. If you want to see where liquidity actually sits, this is where you belong.
MetaTrader 4 and 5 are the workhorses for anyone running expert advisors. Pepperstone bundles its Smart Trader Tools package - roughly twenty add-ons covering session maps, correlation matrices, mini terminals and alarm managers - which meaningfully upgrades stock MT4. MT5 adds better order types and a proper economic calendar, though its symbol list trails what some rivals expose on the same platform.
TradingView integration lets you trade straight from the charts most traders already keep open, at USD 7 round turn.
The Pepperstone Platform is the in-house browser trader, and the rebuilt native mobile app handles watchlists, alerts, charting and full order management rather than acting as a position-checker.
The one hard edge: institutional FIX API access is reported to require around USD 250 million of monthly volume. If your strategy needs to route orders from your own infrastructure rather than through MetaTrader or cTrader, Pepperstone will not serve you at retail size.
Markets and products
More than 1,400 CFDs across five asset groups, and the shape of that list tells you exactly who Pepperstone is for.
- Forex - 90 plus pairs covering majors, minors, exotics and currency indices. This is the core of the business and where pricing is sharpest.
- Share CFDs - 1,100 plus underlying shares from the US, UK, Europe and Australia.
- ETF CFDs - 90 plus. The US line, which is where most of the volume sits, costs USD 0.02 per share per side; German and UK listings are charged at 0.10 percent (minimum EUR/GBP 0.01).
- Indices - 20 plus global benchmarks, commission-free, cost carried in the spread.
- Commodities - 40 markets across energy, metals and softs.
- Cryptocurrency CFDs - available in most regions, with UK retail access blocked by FCA rules.
What is missing is the point. There are no listed options, no exchange-traded futures, no bonds, no mutual funds and no fractional shares. There is also no share ownership of any kind: a Pepperstone position in Apple is a contract for difference with Pepperstone, not stock held in your name at a custodian. You get price exposure and a dividend adjustment; you do not get the security.
For a trader running short-horizon directional bets, none of that matters. For anyone who wants a portfolio that outlives the broker relationship, all of it matters. Copy and social trading are available through third-party integrations rather than as a native Pepperstone product.
Account opening and funding
Onboarding is genuinely fast. Pepperstone states it aims to approve applications within four to eight hours, and the process is entirely digital: identity document, proof of address, an appropriateness questionnaire on your trading experience, and a source-of-funds declaration. That questionnaire is not a formality under FCA and BaFin rules - answer it honestly, because failing it means refusal rather than a downgrade.
The minimum first deposit is USD 10 for most payment methods and effectively zero by bank transfer, so you can size a live account exactly where you want it instead of parking capital to clear a threshold.
Funding covers bank transfer and SEPA, Visa and Mastercard debit and credit, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus regional rails such as POLi, BPAY and UnionPay. Cards and e-wallets credit instantly; bank transfers take one to three business days. Withdrawals return to the funding source and clear in one to three business days, with international wires taking up to five.
Account currencies depend on the entity. Pepperstone Limited (UK), Pepperstone EU Limited (Cyprus) and Pepperstone GmbH (Germany) each offer GBP, USD, EUR and CHF; the Australian entity lists USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, SGD and HKD, and the Bahamas entity's own pages disagree with each other, naming ten currencies on one page and six on another. The European choice matters more than it sounds: a Swiss or German client holding a CHF or EUR account avoids a conversion round trip on every deposit and withdrawal. Deposits are free; withdrawals are free except for international wires at GBP 15 through the UK entity.
Research and education
Research is above average for a pure CFD broker. Pepperstone publishes daily market notes and video commentary from an in-house analyst team, maintains a running macro calendar, and layers on third-party tools - Autochartist pattern recognition, sentiment indicators, and the Smart Trader Tools analytics pack inside MetaTrader. The daily written pieces are readable and take a position rather than hedging every sentence, which is rarer than it should be.
Education is the weaker half, and it is worth being blunt. What exists is a webinar programme, a video archive and a set of explainer articles on leverage, order types and risk. What does not exist is a structured curriculum: no graded course path, no interactive modules, no quizzes, no progress tracking. ForexBrokers.com marks Pepperstone down specifically here, noting the education lacks interactive courses and quizzes relative to the category leaders.
That is a defensible product decision - Pepperstone's pricing is built for people who already trade - but it means a first-time trader will learn somewhere else and execute here. If you are still working out how a stop-loss interacts with position sizing, start on the demo account, which does not expire and mirrors live pricing, and treat the webinars as supplementary rather than as your syllabus.
Customer support
Support runs around the clock on weekdays and keeps extended, though not continuous, weekend cover - ForexBrokers.com measured roughly 24 hours a day Monday to Friday and about 18 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. Three channels are open: phone, email and live chat, with live chat the fastest route for anything account-related.
Language coverage is broad by CFD-broker standards: English, German, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Thai and Vietnamese. The German desk is a real one rather than a translated FAQ, which matters if you are contracting with Pepperstone GmbH under BaFin.
In practice the quality of the answer depends on the question. Platform issues, funding queries and account admin are handled quickly and competently. Detailed questions about the swap calculation on a specific instrument, or the exact conversion mark-up applied to a US share CFD held in a EUR account, tend to bounce to a written follow-up - which is part of why we flag conversion cost as a transparency gap rather than quoting a number for it.
There is no dedicated relationship manager at ordinary account sizes; that arrives with Active Trader status. For most retail clients, live chat plus the platform's own cost reporting is enough.
Frequently asked questions
Razor, for almost anyone trading regularly. Razor gives you a 0.0 to 0.1 pip raw spread on EUR/USD plus USD 3.50 per lot per side, an all-in cost of about 0.8 pips. Standard charges no commission but starts EUR/USD at 1.0 pip. The break-even point is low - trade more than roughly one standard lot a month and Razor is cheaper. On cTrader the commission drops to USD 6 round turn, which widens the gap further.
No. Every instrument at Pepperstone is a contract for difference, including the 1,100 plus share CFDs and 90 plus ETF CFDs. You get price exposure and a cash adjustment when the underlying pays a dividend, but you do not hold the security, you have no voting rights, and the position cannot be transferred to another broker. If you want shares registered in your name, you need a custody broker, not a CFD provider.
No. Pepperstone states on its own costs page that it charges no account-keeping fee, no inactivity fee and no fee to close an account. That is unusual in this category, where several large competitors start billing after six to twelve dormant months. Deposits are free; withdrawals are free by card and e-wallet, with an international bank wire costing GBP 15 at the FCA-regulated entity.
It depends where you live. German clients contract with Pepperstone GmbH under BaFin licence 151148, covered by the EdW scheme at 90 percent of a claim up to EUR 20,000. UK clients contract with Pepperstone Limited under FCA reference 684312, covered by the FSCS up to GBP 85,000. Other EU clients go to Pepperstone EU Limited under CySEC 388/20 with EUR 20,000 of Investor Compensation Fund cover. Australian clients face ASIC AFSL 414530, where no statutory compensation scheme exists. Check the entity named in your client agreement before you fund the account.
Retail leverage is capped at 30:1 on major FX pairs under FCA, BaFin, CySEC and ASIC rules, with lower caps on indices, commodities and crypto. Higher leverage comes two ways: through the Bahamas entity at up to 200:1 or the Kenya entity at up to 400:1, or by qualifying as a professional client in the UK or EU, which unlocks up to 500:1. Professional classification also removes negative balance protection and narrows your regulatory recourse, so it is a genuine trade-off rather than a free upgrade.
Yes, within limits. Expert advisors run on MT4 and MT5, cAlgo strategies run on cTrader, and Pepperstone offers VPS hosting to keep them online through the session. Third-party copy-trading services also connect. What is gated is direct institutional access: FIX API connectivity is reported to require around USD 250 million in monthly volume, so if your system needs to route from your own infrastructure rather than through MetaTrader or cTrader, Pepperstone will not accommodate you at retail size.
