Our verdict
Kraken is the venue to pick when counterparty quality matters more than the headline fee. Nothing else in crypto combines a state and federally recognised bank charter, a full-reserve mandate on customer fiat, a Federal Reserve master account, DCM, DCO and FCM licences, an SEC-registered broker-dealer and two MiCA authorisations passported across the EEA. That is more than a marketing list — it is the difference between a firm that can pass a regulator's stress test and one that hopes never to face one. The product lives up to it: Kraken Pro is a genuine trading terminal, the API is a retail-algo standard, funding is cheap and honestly documented, and staking commission at 20% undercuts Coinbase by fifteen points. The criticism is price at the bottom of the ladder. A tier-1 taker pays 0.80%, which is the most expensive entry rate among serious venues, and the 1% instant-buy fee in the simple app is worse. Kraken+ at USD 4.99 a month waives that app fee on up to USD 10,000 of monthly Buy, Sell and Convert volume, but it leaves Kraken Pro spot pricing untouched, and it is a subscription papering over a bad base rate. European investors should also be clear about the equities story: the 11,000 real US stocks are for US customers only, and what an EEA client actually gets is xStocks, tokenised exposure rather than shares.
Best for
- Traders who prioritise regulatory quality
- Crypto derivatives and margin traders
- API and algorithmic traders
- Higher-volume spot traders
- US investors wanting crypto and stocks together
Less suitable for
- Small, infrequent buyers who skip Kraken+
- European investors wanting real shares
- Anyone wanting a single simple app with no product sprawl
Pros & cons
Pros
8- Wyoming SPDI bank charter through Kraken Financial — a full-reserve institution required to hold 100% unencumbered liquid assets against customer fiat, with a Federal Reserve limited-purpose master account
- Two MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisations plus an EMI licence from the Central Bank of Ireland, passported across all 30 EEA countries
- The first crypto-native firm to hold all three CFTC licences — DCM, DCO and FCM — through Bitnomial, plus a second FCM in Kraken Derivatives US
- SEC-registered broker-dealer (Kraken Securities LLC) and registered investment adviser (Kraken Adviser LLC)
- 831 assets and 1,432 trading pairs on the public API as of August 2026, spanning spot, margin, futures, options, forex markets and indices
- Cash deposits are free on every major rail — EUR SEPA and SEPA Instant, USD ACH and FedWire, GBP Faster Payments, CHF SIC — with fully published withdrawal fees
- Staking commission of 20% on flexible on-chain staking, well below Coinbase's 35%
- Kraken Pro, a native desktop client, a mature API and a CLI aimed at automated agents — a genuinely deep tooling stack for a crypto venue
Cons
6- Entry-tier spot pricing of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker is the most expensive base rate among major regulated venues, and you need USD 10,000 of 30-day volume before it drops below 0.40% taker
- The simple app charges 1% on instant buys, 1.5% on custom orders and a punitive flat 3% on conversions below the minimum order size
- Zero-fee buying, selling and converting in the app (up to USD 10,000 a month, not Kraken Pro trades) is behind a USD 4.99 monthly Kraken+ subscription rather than built into the base schedule
- Payward is privately held and does not publish audited financial statements; Proof of Reserves attestations are useful but are not the same thing
- The 11,000 commission-free stocks and ETFs are US-only — EEA clients get xStocks tokenised equities, which are crypto-asset products with different rights and no share ownership
- Product sprawl is real: Kraken, Kraken Pro, Kraken Desktop, Krak, NinjaTrader, Bitnomial, Breakout and xStocks sit under one brand with different entities, licences and eligibility rules per country

Kraken lists more than 11,000 US stocks and ETFs on NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX with no commission, alongside crypto in the same app, plus free incoming portfolio transfers from another broker. There is no European equities offering — EEA clients get xStocks tokenised equities instead, which are crypto-asset products rather than shares. |

Full review: Kraken
This review is based on official pricing schedules, legal documents and other available sources. It does not claim that we opened an account with this broker or tested it in practice.
Fees: what Kraken actually costs
Kraken's pricing is unusually transparent and unusually front-loaded — the schedule is fully published, and the entry tier is expensive.
Spot on Kraken Pro runs a 12-step maker-taker ladder on 30-day volume: 0.40% / 0.80% at tier 1, 0.30% / 0.60% above USD 2,500, 0.22% / 0.38% above USD 10,000, 0.15% / 0.30% above USD 50,000, 0.12% / 0.25% above USD 100,000, 0.08% / 0.20% above USD 500,000, and 0.00% / 0.10% above USD 10 million. Institutional Pro tiers reach 0.00% / 0.05% above USD 500 million.
Stablecoin and FX pairs are priced separately and far more cheaply — a flat 0.20% both sides at entry, dropping to 0.02% above USD 1 million and 0.00% / 0.001% above USD 100 million. USDG pairs are 0.00% maker / 0.01% taker at every volume.
The simple app is the expensive route: 1% on instant buy and sell, 1.5% on custom orders, and a flat 3% on conversions below the minimum order size — a fee that quietly punishes people tidying up dust balances.
Kraken+ is the fix for those app fees — and only for them. Thirty days free, then USD 4.99 a month (or 49.99 a year; monthly billing and the free trial are available only through the mobile app, while Kraken Web sells annual plans only), and the 1% and 1.5% trading fees on Buy, Sell and Convert — including recurring and custom purchases — vanish on up to USD 10,000 of monthly volume (10,000 GBP, EUR, CAD or AUD in those regions), with boosted stablecoin rewards on top. Spreads and payment-processing fees still apply, and Kraken states that Spot, Futures, API and OTC trades on Kraken Pro are not included, so the 0.40% / 0.80% tier-1 Pro rate is unchanged. For a retail investor buying EUR 500 a month through the app, that subscription saves roughly what it costs against the 1% instant-buy fee; it only starts paying for itself above about 500 of monthly Buy, Sell and Convert volume in the subscription currency.
Everywhere else Kraken is cheap. Every major cash deposit rail is free. Margin costs 0.02%–0.05% to open and again every four hours as rollover, with a 2% liquidation fee. Staking takes 20% of rewards. Futures start at 0.02% maker / 0.05% taker. There is no inactivity fee and no custody fee.
Safety and regulation
Kraken's regulatory portfolio is the strongest argument for using it, and it is not close.
Banking. Kraken Financial holds a Wyoming Special Purpose Depository Institution charter — the first US crypto bank charter recognised at both state and federal level, granted in 2020. An SPDI is a full-reserve institution: unlike a fractional-reserve bank it must hold unencumbered liquid assets equal to at least 100% of customer fiat deposits at all times and may not lend them out. Kraken Financial was also the first crypto bank to obtain a Federal Reserve master account, giving direct access to the US payment system. In 2026 parent company Payward filed with the OCC for a national trust charter for institutional digital-asset custody.
Derivatives. Through sister company Bitnomial, Kraken holds all three CFTC licences needed for a vertically integrated derivatives business — Designated Contract Market, Derivatives Clearing Organization and Futures Commission Merchant — the first crypto-native firm in the US to do so. A second FCM sits in NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC (dba Kraken Derivatives US). Both are NFA members.
Securities. Kraken Securities LLC is an SEC-registered broker-dealer and Kraken Adviser LLC an SEC-registered investment adviser. Payward Interactive, Inc. is a FinCEN-registered Money Services Business with money transmitter licences in 46 US states, DC and Puerto Rico.
Europe. The Central Bank of Ireland has granted the group two MiCA CASP authorisations — held by Payward Europe Solutions Limited (C468360) at 70 Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin D02 R296, and Payward Global Solutions Limited (C559106) — both passported across the 30 EEA states, plus a separate Electronic Money Institution authorisation held by Payward Ireland Limited (C453020, authorised 25 September 2023). In Cyprus, Payward Europe Digital Solutions (CY) Limited holds a CySEC MiFID investment-firm licence. In the UK, Kraken is an FCA Registered Cryptoasset Firm, an FCA-authorised EMI, and runs an FCA-authorised MTF through Crypto Facilities Ltd (FRN 757895); CF Benchmarks Ltd (FRN 847100) is a separate group company registered as a benchmark administrator under Article 34.
Add VARA preliminary approval in Dubai, a BVI FSC VASP registration, and direct approvals in Canada, Australia, Bermuda and Argentina, and Kraken counts over 100 active licences across 30-plus countries.
Two honest caveats. Payward is privately held: it publishes Proof of Reserves attestations, not audited financial statements, so you cannot inspect the balance sheet the way you can Coinbase's. And none of the MiCA or FCA permissions creates a compensation scheme — crypto assets held at Kraken are not covered by any deposit guarantee or investor compensation fund.
Trading platforms
Kraken runs the deepest tooling stack of any consumer crypto venue.
Kraken Pro is the centre of gravity: a configurable order-book terminal covering spot, margin, futures, options and — for US clients — stocks, with the full order-type set, depth and candle charting, position and risk views, and a fee-tier indicator that updates as your 30-day volume moves. Layouts are saveable and dense without being hostile, which is more than can be said for most professional terminals.
Kraken Desktop is a native client for traders who want a persistent multi-monitor workspace rather than a browser tab. It carries the same routing and the same commissions.
The Kraken API is the reason a large share of retail algorithmic crypto trading runs here. REST and WebSocket coverage spans spot and futures, and the public endpoints expose the entire asset and pair universe without authentication — the 831 assets and 1,432 pairs quoted in this record came straight from them. Kraken CLI goes a step further, marketed explicitly as the interface for letting an automated agent place trades.
The Kraken mobile app covers instant buy and sell, convert, bundles, savings plans, staking, perpetual futures and US stocks. It rates 4.74 on the US App Store from roughly 34,000 ratings and 4.54 in Germany from about 3,100 — excellent scores on a much smaller sample than Coinbase's.
Krak is a separate payments app for sending, spending and earning on cash and crypto, and Kraken Institutional covers exchange trading, OTC, qualified custody, staking and prime services.
The cost of this breadth is coherence. Working out which entity holds your account, which products your country permits and which app you should be in takes more effort at Kraken than anywhere else.
Markets and products
Kraken's public API listed 831 assets across 1,432 trading pairs in August 2026 — one of the widest regulated universes available, and materially broader than Coinbase's European offering.
The product range around that spot book is where Kraken separates itself:
- Spot and spot margin at roughly 5:1 on eligible pairs, with opening and 4-hourly rollover fees and a 2% liquidation charge
- Futures and perpetual futures through the FCA-authorised MTF operated by Crypto Facilities Ltd, and the CFTC-regulated Bitnomial and Kraken Derivatives US stack in the United States
- Options, under Crypto Facilities Ltd's FCA permissions other than the MTF
- Forex markets and indices as distinct product lines
- Stocks and ETFs — more than 11,000 US listings on NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX, commission-free, with extended round-the-clock weekday trading on Kraken Pro, free incoming broker transfers, and a Fully Paid Securities Lending programme that can pay a passive yield. US customers only.
- xStocks, tokenised equities such as NVDAx, TSLAx, AAPLx and SPYx, plus perpetual futures on them — this is what EEA clients get instead of real shares
- Staking, DeFi Earn, dual investments, BTC staking, ETH restaking and stablecoin rewards on the yield side
- Kraken Funded, a proprietary-capital evaluation programme, and Kraken Borrow for lending against crypto
- Bundles, savings plans and dollar-cost averaging for passive investors
The distinction that matters most to a German, Austrian or Swiss reader: xStocks are crypto-asset products, not shares. They track a share price; they do not confer ownership, and they sit outside any investor compensation scheme. If you want real equity in your portfolio alongside crypto, Bitpanda's Real Securities are the DACH-relevant comparison, not Kraken's xStocks.
Account opening and funding
Opening is fully online and typically clears the same day for EEA applicants with a supported identity document. The minimum deposit is EUR 1, so there is no capital barrier to trying the platform.
Funding is where Kraken quietly beats almost everyone, because every major cash deposit rail is free and the numbers are published rather than hidden behind a login. In euro, SEPA and SEPA Instant through Plaid, Banking Circle or Bank Frick all cost nothing from a EUR 1 minimum, settling in zero to three business days or instantly. USD ACH via Plaid is free and near-instant with a seven-day withdrawal hold; FedWire through Dart Bank is free and settles in zero to one business day. GBP Faster Payments is free from GBP 1–2. CHF via SIC through Bank Frick is free and settles same day — a genuinely useful detail for Swiss investors, since the only Swiss rail that costs anything is SWIFT at CHF 0.75.
Withdrawals are priced, but modestly and transparently. SEPA costs EUR 1 through Bank Frick, Banking Circle and Openpayd with a EUR 2 minimum; SEPA Instant through ClearJunction is EUR 0.90 with a EUR 3 minimum. SWIFT in euro is EUR 5. USD ACH is free, FedWire USD 4, RTP 1.50% capped at USD 50, SWIFT USD 13. GBP Faster Payments is GBP 1.95, CHF via SIC CHF 1.
That combination — free in, one euro out, published to the cent — is the honest counterweight to Kraken's expensive entry-tier trading fees. Compare it to venues that make you open an account before you can see what a withdrawal costs.

Kraken's educational material is aimed at a more technical reader than Coinbase's, and its research is strongest where it is closest to the market.
Kraken Learn is a large library covering crypto fundamentals, tokenisation, derivatives mechanics, security practice and — increasingly — equities, with explainers on what stocks are, how ETFs work and how tokenised equities differ from shares. The writing assumes you want to understand the mechanism rather than be reassured, which suits the audience Kraken attracts.
CF Benchmarks, the FCA-authorised benchmark administrator Kraken owns, is the more serious research asset. It administers regulated crypto indices used in derivatives and structured products across the industry, including reference rates underpinning listed products at other venues. That is genuine market infrastructure rather than content marketing.
On the platform itself, Kraken Pro provides depth, candles, order-flow context and a live fee-tier readout, and the public API exposes complete market data without authentication — which is why so much third-party crypto analytics is built against Kraken's endpoints in the first place.
What is thin is house market commentary in the style of a traditional broker: no analyst price targets, no equity research, limited screening on the stocks product. Kraken gives you excellent plumbing and expects you to bring your own view. For anyone already using TradingView or an external analytics stack, that is the right trade; for an investor who wants to be told what to buy, it will feel sparse.
Customer support
Support is one of the few areas where Kraken has historically outperformed the crypto industry rather than merely matched it.
The published coverage is 24/7 live chat backed by phone support and a ticket queue, with a support-hours page and a status page that are both easy to find. Kraken localises the platform into English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Romanian, Czech, Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Greek, Arabic and Chinese across 27 country sites. Kraken has run a dedicated 24/7 support feature page for years and treats response time as a marketed attribute, which is not something most exchanges are willing to do.
The practical experience matches better than at Coinbase. Live chat reaches a human quickly, account-restriction cases tend to move rather than stall, and the knowledge base is unusually specific — the deposit and withdrawal fee articles, for example, list every banking partner by name with per-rail minimums and processing times, which is exactly the level of detail most competitors refuse to publish.
Two caveats. First, the breadth of the group works against you when a query crosses entities: a question that touches Kraken Pro, Kraken Derivatives US and Krak can bounce between teams. Second, verification and compliance reviews are handled strictly. Kraken's regulatory posture is its product, and that means source-of-funds questions and document requests are more common and less negotiable than at lighter-touch venues. That is a feature if you value the licences; it is friction if you do not.
App-store sentiment supports the picture — 4.74 in the US and 4.54 in Germany — though on much smaller samples than the mainstream consumer apps.
Frequently asked questions
The tier-1 rate of 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker is genuinely the most expensive base pricing among major regulated venues, and it only improves once 30-day volume passes USD 2,500 (0.30% / 0.60%) and USD 10,000 (0.22% / 0.38%). Kraken+ does not change that. The subscription, at USD 4.99 a month after a 30-day free trial, waives the trading fee only on Buy, Sell and Convert in the Kraken app and on kraken.com, up to USD 10,000 of monthly volume, and Kraken states that it does not include Spot, Futures, API or OTC trades on Kraken Pro. What it does remove is the 1% instant-buy fee (1.5% on custom orders) in the simple app; against the 1% fee it pays for itself from about 500 of monthly volume in the subscription currency. For anyone buying regular amounts above that through the app, subscribing is close to a no-brainer — but it is a subscription compensating for a poor base rate, and that is a fair criticism.
One of its subsidiaries is. Kraken Financial holds a Wyoming Special Purpose Depository Institution charter, the first US crypto bank charter recognised at both state and federal level, and was the first crypto bank granted a Federal Reserve limited-purpose master account. An SPDI is a full-reserve institution: it must hold unencumbered liquid assets equal to at least 100% of customer fiat deposits at all times and cannot lend them out. That is a stronger reserve requirement than an ordinary bank faces — but it is a reserve mandate, not FDIC deposit insurance, and it does not extend a guarantee to crypto assets.
No. The commission-free offering of more than 11,000 US stocks and ETFs on NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX is available to US customers only. What EEA clients get instead is xStocks — tokenised equities such as NVDAx, TSLAx and SPYx, plus perpetual futures on them. These track share prices but are crypto-asset products: they do not confer share ownership or shareholder rights, and they sit outside investor compensation schemes. For real equity ownership from a DACH account, Bitpanda's Real Securities or a conventional broker is the comparison to make.
Deposits are free. SEPA and SEPA Instant via Plaid, Banking Circle or Bank Frick all cost nothing from a EUR 1 minimum and settle in zero to three business days or instantly. Withdrawals cost EUR 1 via SEPA through Bank Frick, Banking Circle or Openpayd with a EUR 2 minimum, or EUR 0.90 for SEPA Instant via ClearJunction with a EUR 3 minimum. SWIFT in euro is EUR 5 with a EUR 100 minimum. Swiss investors get CHF via SIC free in and CHF 1 out, settling same day.
Kraken takes 20% of rewards on flexible on-chain staking, with bonded and asset-specific rates varying. Coinbase's standard commission is 35%, falling to 25.25% only at the top Coinbase One Premium tier. On a 3% network yield that difference is roughly 0.45 percentage points of annual return handed to the platform — meaningful for a long-term holder, and one of the clearest cost advantages Kraken has over Coinbase.
No. Payward, Inc. is privately held. That matters for transparency: Kraken publishes Proof of Reserves attestations, which demonstrate that customer balances are backed, but it does not publish audited financial statements the way Nasdaq-listed Coinbase must. You can verify that the assets exist; you cannot inspect the group's profitability, leverage or capital position in the same detail. The Wyoming SPDI subsidiary is separately supervised as a bank, which partly offsets this, but the parent balance sheet is not public.
