Our verdict
TradeStation is a specialist tool that happens to come with a brokerage account attached. If you write and test mechanical strategies, the combination of tick-level historical data, EasyLanguage, Portfolio Maestro and a Matrix ladder is still hard to beat at retail pricing, and the FINRA/SEC/SIPC-regulated broker behind it is backed by Tokyo-listed Monex Group. Active futures and options traders who clear real volume get their commissions stepped down tier by tier, which is where the pricing finally makes sense. Everyone else pays for capability they will not use. At the base tier, USD 0.80 per option contract is roughly 20 percent above the cheapest US competitors and USD 1.75 per futures side is close to double what a dedicated futures broker charges. Add a USD 10 monthly inactivity fee below the activity thresholds, USD 35 a year on IRAs, USD 125 to transfer out and margin at 11.75% under USD 50,000, and the cost base is unforgiving for a casual account. The product menu also has real gaps: no spot crypto, no forex, no fractional shares, no no-transaction-fee mutual funds and no meaningful fixed-income desk. Choose TradeStation because you need the strategy engine and will trade enough to earn the lower tiers — not because you want a cheap place to park a portfolio.
Best for
- Systematic and algo traders
- Active futures traders
- Advanced options strategists
- Entity and professional accounts
Less suitable for
- Beginners
- Buy-and-hold fund investors
- Crypto and forex traders
- Low-activity accounts
Pros & cons
Pros
7- EasyLanguage plus tick-level historical data gives retail traders genuine strategy development, backtesting and optimisation — not a toy backtester
- Commission tiers are assessed per asset class, so equities, options and futures each step down independently with monthly volume
- Options fall from USD 0.80 to USD 0.00 per contract and futures from USD 1.75 to USD 0.50 per side at the top volume brackets
- RadarScreen scans hundreds of symbols in real time with custom indicators, and the Matrix ladder is a proper depth-of-market execution tool
- Regulated by the SEC and FINRA (CRD #39473) with SIPC cover to USD 500,000, and owned by Tokyo-listed Monex Group
- Zero commission for U.S. clients on US equities and more than 3,000 ETFs, including spot Bitcoin ETPs; clients outside the U.S. pay a USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade
- Full entity account support — LLCs, corporations, trusts and partnerships — plus futures IRAs
Cons
6- USD 10 monthly inactivity fee unless the account placed at least ten trades or held a USD 5,000 average end-of-month equity balance during the previous 90 days
- Base-tier options pricing of USD 0.80 per contract is above the US market average, and index options cost more again
- USD 1.75 per futures contract per side at the base tier is roughly double a dedicated futures broker's headline rate
- Non-trading fees are dated and steep: USD 125 outgoing ACAT, USD 35 annual IRA fee, USD 50 IRA termination, USD 14.95 per option exercise or assignment
- No spot cryptocurrency, no forex, no fractional shares and no no-transaction-fee mutual funds
- Margin starts at 11.75% on debit balances under USD 50,000, and uninvested cash earns essentially nothing on the first USD 100,000

Full review: TradeStation
Fees and what they cost in practice
TradeStation prices on a volume ladder assessed separately for each asset class, so you can sit at tier one for equities and tier three for options in the same month. That is fairer than a blended schedule, but it also means the headline number you see when you open the account is the worst one you will ever pay.
Equities and ETFs are USD 0 commission on the standard plan for U.S. clients; clients outside the U.S. pay a USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade at every volume tier. The exceptions matter: direct-routed orders add USD 0.005 per share, and sub-USD 1 or OTC stocks cost USD 0.005 per share with a USD 1.00 minimum and USD 50.00 maximum per order.
Options start at USD 0.80 per contract. For U.S. clients there is no ticket charge, and the rate falls to USD 0.00 per contract for accounts trading more than 10,000 contracts a month; clients outside the U.S. pay a USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade on top of the per-contract rate. Index options are priced separately at roughly USD 0.60–1.00 per contract, and direct routing adds USD 1.00 per contract. A ten-lot vertical spread at the base tier costs a U.S. client about USD 16 to open; outside the U.S. the USD 5.00 ticket charge comes on top.
Futures start at USD 1.75 per contract per side and step down to USD 0.50 at the highest bracket; micro futures run USD 0.50 down to USD 0.25 per side. Exchange, regulatory and a USD 0.10 per contract overnight fee sit on top.
The drag most people underestimate is the fixed costs:
- USD 10 per month inactivity fee unless the account placed at least ten trades or held a USD 5,000 average end-of-month equity balance during the previous 90 days
- USD 125 outgoing ACAT transfer, USD 35 annual IRA fee, USD 50 IRA termination
- USD 14.95 per option exercise or assignment; early assignment USD 1.50 per contract with a USD 5.95 minimum
- USD 14.95 per mutual fund transaction, with no no-transaction-fee list
- Wires USD 25 domestic, USD 35 international; paper statements USD 5 per page
- Margin interest of 11.75% under USD 50,000, 10.75% to USD 500,000, 6.25% to USD 2m and 4.25% above
All figures are for TradeStation Securities, Inc., the US broker-dealer, and the commission figures are its rates for U.S. clients unless the non-U.S. ticket charge is named. TradeStation Europe B.V.'s own pricing page shows the same USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade on stocks, ETFs and options for clients outside the U.S. Commission tiers are published on TradeStation's own pricing pages and change from time to time.
Safety and regulation
TradeStation Securities, Inc. is registered with the SEC as a broker-dealer (SEC #8-48711, effective 31 January 1996) and is a member of FINRA (CRD #39473), the NYSE, SIPC, the NFA and CME, clearing through NSCC, DTC and OCC. That combination — broker-dealer and futures commission merchant under one roof — is why a single account can hold equities, options and futures.
Investor protection. Securities and cash are covered by SIPC up to USD 500,000, with a USD 250,000 cash sub-limit. SIPC responds to the failure of the broker, not to losses on positions. Futures balances sit in CFTC-segregated accounts and carry no equivalent compensation scheme, which is the standard structure for US futures and worth understanding before you fund a futures account.
Ownership and stability. TradeStation's roots go back to 1982, when Bill and Rafael Cruz founded Omega Research to sell charting and system-testing software; the brokerage came later. Since 2011 the group has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Monex Group, Inc., listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (8698). TradeStation Securities itself is not listed, but its parent publishes audited group accounts and consolidated segment reporting — a real transparency signal, though not the same as the broker being publicly traded in its own right.
International structure. TradeStation Europe B.V. offers securities, options and futures trading to customers residing in Europe; it is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (no. 89426657) and regulated by the Dutch AFM. TradeStation Securities provides clearing and execution for TradeStation Europe and custodies certain client assets on TradeStation Europe's behalf, while TradeStation Europe holds its clients' funds with the foundation Stichting TradeStation Europe. According to TradeStation Europe's customer agreements, its clients may be able to claim compensation from the Dutch investor compensation scheme (beleggerscompensatiestelsel) if TradeStation Europe is unable to meet in full a liability to them; eligible claims for the investment services are covered up to EUR 20,000 per person, and professional clients may not be eligible. TradeStation International Ltd is authorised and regulated by the FCA in the UK and acts as an introducer to TradeStation Group's affiliates and a non-affiliated broker rather than holding client assets itself. Non-US clients should confirm which entity holds their account and which protections apply, because introducing-broker structures do not carry the same coverage as the entity that custodies the assets.
We do not describe any broker as safe or guaranteed; these are the facts on record.
Trading platforms
The desktop platform, now shipping alongside the newer TITAN X build, is the reason TradeStation exists. It is a native Windows and Mac application designed for multi-monitor workspaces, and it is genuinely deep rather than merely busy.
The components that matter:
- EasyLanguage — TradeStation's own strategy language, readable enough that a trader can learn it without a programming background, but capable of full signal logic, position sizing and money management. Strategies backtest against tick-level history, optimise across parameter ranges and then run live with automated order submission.
- RadarScreen — a real-time scanner that runs custom indicators across hundreds of symbols simultaneously and updates tick by tick, not on a polling interval.
- Matrix — a depth-of-market price ladder with drag-and-drop order management, bracket orders and one-click flatten. This is the tool active futures traders live in.
- OptionStation Pro — position modelling, spread building, greeks by strike and probability analysis.
- Portfolio Maestro — portfolio-level backtesting across multiple strategies and symbols, with allocation and correlation analysis.
The web platform covers charting, order entry and account management competently but is a step down. The mobile apps carry 45+ indicators, options chains and full position management — good for monitoring and adjustment, not for running the workflow.
The honest caveat: this is not software you learn in an afternoon. The workspace model, symbol linking and strategy properties dialog all assume you are prepared to invest time. Traders who want to click a buy button on a clean chart will find it needlessly heavy; traders who want to test whether a rule set actually made money over ten years of tick data will find almost nothing comparable at retail pricing.
Markets and products
TradeStation covers US-listed securities and the US futures complex thoroughly, and stops there.
Available:
- Stocks — all US exchanges plus OTC; US-listed equities commission-free for U.S. clients on the standard plan (clients outside the U.S. pay a USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade), OTC and sub-USD 1 stocks at USD 0.005 per share (min USD 1.00, max USD 50.00 per order)
- ETFs — more than 3,000, commission-free for U.S. clients (USD 5.00 ticket charge per trade outside the U.S.), including spot Bitcoin and other crypto exchange-traded products, which is how TradeStation clients get digital-asset exposure
- Equity options and index options — full chains, multi-leg spreads and complex strategies through OptionStation Pro
- Futures — CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX including the micro contracts, with reduced intraday day-trading margins on index futures
- Futures options — traded through the FuturesPlus platform
- Mutual funds — a curated list at USD 14.95 per transaction
Not available:
- Spot cryptocurrency — TradeStation exited direct crypto trading; exposure is via ETPs only
- Forex — no spot FX offering for retail clients
- Fractional shares — you buy whole shares or nothing
- Fixed income — no meaningful bond or Treasury desk for retail accounts
- Foreign exchanges — no direct access to European or Asian listed equities
The practical consequence is that TradeStation works as a complete home for a US derivatives and equities trader and as a partial home for anyone else. A European investor cannot hold EUR, cannot buy a Frankfurt listing and cannot build a bond ladder here. A crypto-native trader gets ETPs, not coins. Decide whether the strategy engine is worth accepting that boundary.
Account opening and funding
There is no account minimum to open a TradeStation brokerage account, though a margin account needs USD 2,000 in equity under Regulation T before margin can be used, and a futures account is a separate application with its own risk disclosures and approval process.
US applications are online and typically complete in one to three business days once identity verification and options approval levels clear. International applications take longer because documents are reviewed manually, and entity accounts — LLCs, corporations, trusts, partnerships, all of which TradeStation supports — take longer again. Retirement accounts include Traditional, Roth, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs plus futures IRAs.
Funding. Accounts are USD only. ACH transfers are free and settle in one to three business days; wires arrive same day. Outgoing wires cost USD 25 domestic and USD 35 international. Cheques are accepted. Withdrawals typically take one to three business days to reach the bank.
Costs to plan around before you fund:
- The USD 10 monthly inactivity fee applies unless the account placed at least ten trades or held a USD 5,000 average end-of-month equity balance during the previous 90 days
- Transferring the account out later costs USD 125 via ACAT
- IRAs carry USD 35 a year and USD 50 to close
- Uninvested cash earns essentially nothing on the first USD 100,000, so idle balances are a real cost
International eligibility is by country list and does not include Canada. Confirm your jurisdiction and which entity will hold the account before applying.
Research and education
TradeStation's research is trader-facing rather than investor-facing, and it is strongest where the platform is strongest — screening, scanning and testing rather than fundamental analysis.
What is genuinely good:
- Hot Lists with more than 20 filters and 17+ pre-defined technical scans, updating in real time
- RadarScreen as a research tool in its own right — any indicator you can write becomes a scannable column across hundreds of symbols
- "Why Is It Moving?" which attaches Benzinga news context to unusual price action
- Traders Insight daily market commentary from the in-house desk
- Historical data depth — tick-level history is the raw material for the backtester and is far better than most retail platforms provide
- Portfolio Maestro for portfolio-level simulation across strategies
What is thin: there are no third-party analyst research PDFs, no consolidated economic calendar, limited Treasury and macro data, and only basic company fundamentals. Someone building a long-term equity position from a valuation thesis will need external sources.
Education follows the same slant. The Master Class series covers advanced material — cluster analysis, EasyLanguage coding, portfolio construction — and there are live weekly sessions plus strong options strategy content with downloadable worksheets. There is very little for beginners, and almost nothing on fund selection, asset allocation or fixed income.
Simulated trading is available on the full platform, which is the right way to learn the workspace model and to walk-forward test a strategy before committing capital. Given the learning curve, budget real time in the simulator before going live.
Customer support
Support runs on US business hours with extended coverage around the equity session, plus a separate futures trade desk that operates through the overnight session — necessary, given futures trade nearly around the clock and an open position at 03:00 Eastern needs a human who can act.
Channels are phone, email and live chat. English is the primary language, with Spanish coverage reflecting TradeStation's Latin American client base; there is no German, French or Italian desk, which is a real limitation for DACH clients. There is no 24/7 general support line.
In practice:
- Platform and EasyLanguage questions are handled well — the support staff understand the product, and the community forums plus published EasyLanguage documentation resolve a lot before you need to call
- Order routing, margin and assignment questions get competent answers from the trade desk
- Account administration — transfers, entity paperwork, international documentation — is the slower path, with multi-day turnarounds common
- Higher-balance and professional accounts get more direct routing, but there is no formal relationship-manager tier for retail
Self-service is a genuine strength. The fee schedule, pricing disclosures and platform help are all published in detail on TradeStation's own site, and most questions about commissions, data fees or margin can be answered without contacting anyone. That matters at a broker whose fee structure has as many moving parts as this one.
Frequently asked questions
At the base tier, yes, relative to US competitors: USD 0.80 per option contract and USD 1.75 per futures contract per side both sit above market, and a USD 10 monthly inactivity fee applies unless you placed at least ten trades or held a USD 5,000 average end-of-month equity balance during the previous 90 days. The tiers change the picture — options reach USD 0.00 per contract and futures USD 0.50 per side at the highest volume brackets, assessed separately per asset class. TradeStation is priced for people who trade a lot, not for people who trade occasionally.
Not directly. TradeStation no longer offers spot cryptocurrency trading. Digital-asset exposure is available only through exchange-traded products, including spot Bitcoin ETPs, which trade on the same terms as the rest of the ETF list: commission-free for U.S. clients, USD 5.00 per trade for clients outside the U.S. If you want to hold coins rather than a securities wrapper, this is the wrong broker.
EasyLanguage is TradeStation's proprietary strategy language, designed so that trading rules read close to plain English. You do not need it to place trades, but it is the reason most serious users are on the platform: it lets you define entry and exit logic, backtest it against tick-level history, optimise parameters, walk it forward and then run it live with automated order submission. There is a large public library of community code, and the Master Class series covers the language directly.
TradeStation Securities is a member of SIPC, which covers securities and cash up to USD 500,000 with a USD 250,000 cash sub-limit if the broker fails. SIPC does not cover market losses. Futures balances are held in CFTC-segregated accounts under NFA and CME rules, with no SIPC-equivalent compensation scheme. The group is owned by Monex Group, listed in Tokyo (8698), which publishes audited consolidated accounts.
TradeStation accepts clients from many countries outside the US. For Europe the group has its own broker, TradeStation Europe B.V., which is regulated by the Dutch AFM and, according to TradeStation, offers securities, options and futures trading to customers residing in Europe. TradeStation Securities provides clearing and execution for TradeStation Europe and custodies certain client assets on its behalf; TradeStation Europe holds its clients' funds with the foundation Stichting TradeStation Europe. TradeStation International Ltd, FCA-authorised in the UK, acts as an introducer to group affiliates and a non-affiliated broker and does not hold accounts itself. Eligibility is by country list and Canada is not served. According to TradeStation Europe's customer agreements, its clients may be able to claim from the Dutch investor compensation scheme, up to EUR 20,000 per person for eligible claims, if TradeStation Europe is unable to meet in full a liability to them; professional clients may not be eligible. The TradeStation documents we checked do not say which countries TradeStation Europe accepts, so confirm before applying which entity will hold the account and which investor protection applies. Note also that accounts are USD-denominated, so European clients carry currency conversion costs and USD exposure on cash balances.
Meet either condition over the previous 90-day period: place at least ten trades, or hold an average end-of-month equity balance of USD 5,000. If your account will sit idle between trades with less than USD 5,000 average equity, the fee is USD 120 a year on top of commissions — enough to make TradeStation a poor fit for a small, dormant satellite account.
