Our verdict
Coinbase earns its position for two reasons that have nothing to do with price: it is a public company that files audited quarterly accounts, and it built the only crypto app your parents can use without a phone call. If you buy a few hundred euros of bitcoin a month and hold it, the extra cost is a rounding error against the risk of using an opaque offshore venue, and the MiCA authorisation from the CSSF means an EEA regulator is now genuinely on the hook. But the moment your volumes rise, the maths turns hostile. Simple orders bundle a spread with a fee Coinbase declines to publish in advance; the 1% limit-order execution fee is charged on both sides of every trade and survives a Coinbase One subscription; staking hands 35% of your rewards to Coinbase against Kraken's 20%. Support is the other structural weakness — the 2025 insider data breach came out of the customer-support organisation itself, and slow, scripted service is the single most common complaint in public reviews. Buy here, learn here, then move the trading elsewhere.
Best for
- First-time crypto buyers
- Mobile-first investors
- US and UK investors wanting crypto and stocks in one app
- Anyone who prioritises a listed, audited counterparty
Less suitable for
- High-frequency or high-volume traders
- Cost-sensitive stakers
- EEA investors wanting stocks or ETFs
- Anyone who expects fast, human customer service
Pros & cons
Pros
8- Nasdaq-listed parent (COIN) with SEC-filed audited financials — the strongest transparency signal available in crypto
- MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisation from the Luxembourg CSSF, passported across the EEA, with Germany migrated on 23 October 2025
- The best mobile app in the category: 4.68 stars from roughly 1.8 million US App Store ratings, 4.45 from about 44,000 in Germany
- Commission-free US stocks and ETFs through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp (FINRA/SIPC), cleared at Apex, for US customers; UK customers get US stocks only (no ETFs) and pay an FX conversion fee of typically 0.50% when paying in GBP
- Coinbase Advanced gives order-book pricing with no built-in spread on the same login as the simple app
- Broad EU funding coverage — SEPA, 3D Secure cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, iDEAL and BLIK
- Explicitly states it runs no payment-for-order-flow arrangements with market makers
- Handled the 2025 data breach with unusual transparency: public disclosure, refused ransom, customer reimbursement commitment
Cons
6- Simple buy and sell pricing is opaque by design — a spread is folded into the quote and the added fee varies by payment method, size, jurisdiction and asset, disclosed only at the preview screen
- A flat 1% limit-order execution fee applies to every simple limit buy and sell, and Coinbase One explicitly does not waive it
- Staking commission of 35% of rewards is nearly double Kraken's 20% flexible-staking rate, and Coinbase One only cuts it to 25.25% at the top tier
- Customer support is the standout weakness, and the May 2025 breach originated inside the outsourced support organisation itself
- EEA retail gets crypto only — no stocks, no ETFs, no futures; the equities product stops at the US and UK border
- Coinbase does not publish the Coinbase Advanced retail fee tiers without a login, so you cannot compare total cost before opening an account

| Stocks (per order) | Free | Coinbase Capital Markets Corp charges no commission on US stocks and ETFs. Stocks and ETFs are available to US customers; UK customers, via CB Payments Ltd (FCA FRN 1045733), can trade US stocks only, as Coinbase states that ETFs and funds are not currently available to UK users. UK customers who pay in GBP are charged a CB Payments Ltd FX conversion fee of typically 0.50% of the transaction value, because the stocks are priced in USD; Coinbase says funding with USDC from the Coinbase balance avoids the GBP-to-USD conversion. The equities service is not offered to EEA retail clients. ADR custody fees of roughly USD 0.01–0.03 per share are deducted from dividends on some foreign shares. |
| US stocks | Free | Zero commission, cleared through Apex Clearing Corporation. For US customers, settled cash is swept back to the Coinbase USD balance, at which point SIPC protection ends — a detail worth knowing before leaving large balances idle. UK customers receive sale proceeds as USDC in their Coinbase balance rather than as USD cash, and can convert the USDC to GBP in the app; that USDC is likewise outside SIPC cover, since Coinbase states that SIPC does not apply to digital assets or cash held in a Coinbase Inc. or affiliate account. |
| ETFs | Free | US-listed ETFs trade on the same commission-free schedule as stocks, for US customers only: Coinbase states that ETFs and funds are not currently available to UK users. There is no European UCITS ETF offering. |
| Options (per contract) | n/a | Coinbase does not offer listed equity or crypto options to retail clients. |
| Futures (per contract) | tiered | US clients trade CFTC-regulated crypto futures through Coinbase Financial Markets; eligible non-US clients trade perpetual-style futures — including stock, index and commodity perpetuals — on Coinbase International Exchange. Coinbase does not publish the per-contract commission schedule outside the signed-in product, so no figure is recorded here. |

Coinbase Advanced, the retail order book, uses a separate tier table that Coinbase only shows to signed-in users, so it is not recorded. Simple buy/sell orders in the main app are priced entirely differently — a spread is baked into the quote and a variable Coinbase fee is added on top. |

Recorded regulatory actions
2024 · FCA£3,503,546
The FCA fined CB Payments Ltd (reference 900635) GBP 3,503,546 by Final Notice of 23 July 2024 for repeatedly breaching a voluntary requirement imposed on 30 October 2020. Between 31 October 2020 and 1 October 2023 the firm onboarded 13,416 high-risk customers; about 31 percent of them made 12,912 prohibited deposits worth roughly USD 24.9 million, which funded around USD 226 million of crypto transactions through other Coinbase companies. The penalty already reflects a 30 percent settlement discount; without it the figure would have been GBP 5,003,646.
2023 · NYDFSUS$50,000,000
Coinbase, Inc. entered a consent order with the New York Department of Financial Services on 4 January 2023: a USD 50 million penalty plus a committed USD 50 million of compliance investment over two years, for long-running shortcomings in know-your-customer and customer due diligence, transaction monitoring and suspicious-activity reporting. An independent monitor was installed.
2025 · Self-disclosed
In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that criminals bribed a group of overseas customer-support agents to copy customer data covering less than 1% of monthly transacting users. Names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, masked SSN and bank identifiers, government-ID images and balance snapshots were taken. Passwords, 2FA codes, private keys and funds were not accessed. Coinbase refused a USD 20 million ransom, set up a USD 20 million reward fund instead, fired the insiders and committed to reimbursing customers socially engineered out of funds as a result.
Regulation and investor compensation reduce risk, they do not remove it. No broker is guaranteed safe.

Full review: Coinbase
Fees: what Coinbase actually costs
Coinbase runs three different price lists and most users never realise they are on the expensive one.
Simple buy and sell — the default in the app — bundles a spread into the quoted price and adds a Coinbase fee on top. Coinbase states plainly that this fee depends on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset, and that it is only visible on the trade preview screen. There is no published table. For simple limit orders Coinbase does name a number: a 1% limit-order execution fee on each buy and each sell, on top of a Coinbase fee it documents as 1.875%, varying by payment method.
Coinbase Advanced removes the spread entirely and prices against the order book. Coinbase does not publish those retail tiers without a login. The closest public reference is the Coinbase Exchange schedule: 0.60% taker / 0.40% maker below USD 10,000 of 30-day volume, 0.25% / 0.15% from USD 50k, 0.20% / 0.10% from USD 100k, and 0.04% / 0.00% above USD 400 million.
Coinbase One is the subscription answer. It zeroes the trading fee on simple crypto trades up to USD 500 a month (Basic), USD 10,000 (Preferred) or without limit (Premium), and adds 3.5% USDC rewards and a 5–15% staking boost. It does not remove the spread and does not waive the 1% limit-order fee. The zero-fee benefit itself excludes Coinbase Advanced, but the subscription does reach Advanced through a separate benefit: a 25% rebate on Advanced spot fees, none on Basic, capped at USD 100 a month on Preferred and uncapped on Premium.
Everything else is comparatively minor: 0.2% on Lightning sends, 0.01% capped at 20 USDT on Tether withdrawals, a flat 2% if Coinbase has to liquidate BTC loan collateral. There is no inactivity fee and no custody fee. The item that quietly costs long-term holders the most is staking commission at 35% of rewards — on a 3% network yield that is roughly a full percentage point handed over every year.
Safety and regulation
Coinbase Global is listed on Nasdaq under COIN, which means quarterly SEC filings, audited accounts and a public share price that reacts to bad news. In an industry where most competitors are private, that alone is a meaningful structural advantage.
The European picture changed in 2025. Coinbase obtained a MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF and now serves the entire EEA through Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. (RCS Luxembourg B292147, registered at 5 Place de la Gare). The migration ran in waves: Austria on 22 September 2025, Germany, Ireland, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Latvia and Slovenia on 23 October 2025. E-money services stay with Coinbase Ireland Limited (company number 630350) under the Central Bank of Ireland, governed by Irish law, while the crypto services are governed by Luxembourg law.
What that authorisation does not do is create a compensation scheme. MiCA imposes segregation, custody and disclosure obligations; it does not add a deposit guarantee. Coinbase is explicit that crypto is not FDIC-insured, not SIPC-covered and not protected by any equivalent scheme. What exists instead is a crime insurance policy held by Coinbase Global covering a portion of digital assets across its storage systems against theft — and Coinbase notes total losses could exceed insurance recoveries.
The securities side is different and stronger. Coinbase Capital Markets Corp is a FINRA and SIPC member; Apex Clearing provides execution, clearing and custody. SIPC covers USD 500,000 per customer including USD 250,000 cash, and Apex adds excess-SIPC cover with a USD 150 million firm-wide limit and up to USD 37.5 million per customer. The catch is worth reading twice: for US customers, settled cash sweeps back to the Coinbase, Inc. USD balance, and SIPC protection ends at that moment. UK customers receive sale proceeds as USDC in their Coinbase balance, which they can convert to GBP in the app, and that USDC is outside SIPC cover in the same way: Coinbase states that SIPC does not apply to digital assets or cash held in a Coinbase Inc. or affiliate account.
We have recorded three incidents. Two are regulatory: the FCA fined CB Payments Ltd GBP 3,503,546 by Final Notice of 23 July 2024 for onboarding high-risk customers in breach of a voluntary requirement, and Coinbase, Inc. entered a consent order with the New York Department of Financial Services on 4 January 2023, paying a USD 50 million penalty and committing a further USD 50 million to compliance. The third is the May 2025 insider data breach, in which criminals bribed overseas support agents to copy account data for under 1% of monthly transacting users. Names, addresses, government-ID images, masked bank identifiers and balance snapshots were taken; credentials, private keys and funds were not. Coinbase refused a USD 20 million ransom, funded a USD 20 million reward instead, and committed to reimbursing customers socially engineered out of funds.
Trading platforms
Coinbase runs one login across three very different experiences, and choosing correctly is the single biggest cost decision a Coinbase user makes.
The simple app and web surface is the product most people know: buy, sell, convert, recurring buys, staking, USDC rewards, the Visa debit card. It is genuinely excellent as consumer software — clean information hierarchy, sensible defaults, biometric login, a portfolio view that a non-technical user can read. It is also the surface where a spread is folded into every quote.
Coinbase Advanced is a full central-limit order book on the same account. No spread, maker-taker pricing, depth and candlestick charting, limit, stop-limit and market orders, and a live fee-tier readout that updates hourly. Anyone trading more than a few hundred euros a month should be here. Coinbase's own disclosure confirms all Primary Balance trades — simple and advanced alike — are executed through the Coinbase Exchange order book or competitive auctions, and that Coinbase runs no payment-for-order-flow arrangements.
The API layer is the Coinbase Developer Platform: REST and WebSocket market data and trading endpoints, plus wallet, payments and onchain infrastructure aimed as much at businesses building on Coinbase as at individual algo traders.
Beyond retail sit Coinbase Prime for institutions and Coinbase International Exchange, the perpetual-style futures venue for eligible non-US clients, which now lists stock, index and commodity perpetuals alongside crypto.
The gap against Kraken and Bitpanda Fusion is charting and order-type depth. There is no TradingView integration, no desktop client, no multi-leg tooling. Advanced is competent rather than powerful.
Markets and products
Coinbase Exchange's public product endpoint lists 833 order books across roughly 490 distinct base assets as of August 2026, though retail availability varies by jurisdiction and a European account will see materially fewer listings than a US one.
Beyond spot, the product surface has widened considerably:
- Stocks and ETFs through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp, commission-free, for US customers; UK customers — via CB Payments Ltd under FCA FRN 1045733 — get US stocks only, as Coinbase states that ETFs and funds are not currently available to UK users. UK customers who pay in GBP are charged a CB Payments Ltd FX conversion fee of typically 0.50% of the transaction value, because the stocks are priced in USD; Coinbase says funding with USDC from the Coinbase balance avoids the GBP-to-USD conversion. Corporate actions, dividends and shareholder meetings are handled through Apex.
- Futures: CFTC-regulated crypto futures on Coinbase Financial Markets for US clients; perpetual-style futures for eligible non-US clients on Coinbase International Exchange, including stock, equity-index and commodity perpetuals.
- Staking on ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, SOL, XTZ and others, with a 35% commission on rewards and instant-unstake available for a disclosed fee.
- USDC rewards at 3.5% for Coinbase One members, plus DEX trading that routes orders to decentralised venues through aggregators, with an additional service fee that Coinbase One does not waive.
- Coinbase Card, a Visa debit card with no Coinbase transaction fee but a spread on the underlying crypto sale, issued by Pathward, N.A.
The asymmetry to understand before opening an account is geographic. EEA retail customers get crypto and only crypto. The equities product, the futures product and the US-specific yield products all stop at the border. A German or Austrian investor comparing Coinbase against Bitpanda is comparing a crypto-only venue against a broker that also sells 7,500 real shares — not a like-for-like contest.
Account opening and funding
Opening is fast and almost entirely automated. Most European and US applicants complete identity verification in minutes, and there is no minimum deposit — the constraint is the minimum trade size, not the balance.
Funding in the EU is unusually broad for a crypto venue. SEPA transfer works for buying, selling, adding cash and cashing out, settling in one to three business days. Easy Bank Transfer, an open-banking rail, adds cash in the Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany and Ireland. 3D Secure cards are instant for buying and cashing out in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain. PayPal buys instantly and cashes out; Apple Pay and Google Pay buy instantly; iDEAL covers the Netherlands and BLIK covers Poland. UK customers add Faster Payments. The trade-off is that card and wallet routes carry the highest embedded fee, and Coinbase does not publish those numbers in advance.
For the institutional order book the numbers are public and cheap: Coinbase Exchange charges EUR 0.15 for a SEPA deposit and nothing for a SEPA withdrawal, USD 10 in and USD 25 out for a domestic wire, and nothing for ACH. Retail Coinbase does not publish an equivalent table.
Base currencies are led by USD, EUR and GBP, with additional local currencies in specific markets. Coinbase warns that if your bank cannot accept the withdrawal currency it may reject or convert the payment at its own rate — a real cost for anyone holding a USD balance and withdrawing to a euro account.
Coinbase One is available across the DACH region and most of the EEA, including Austria, Germany and Switzerland, plus the UK, US, Canada, Brazil and Singapore.
Research and education
Coinbase's strength here is education for beginners, not research for traders.
Coinbase Learn is a large, well-produced library covering wallets, custody, consensus mechanisms, tax basics and individual asset explainers, and the Learning Rewards programme pays small amounts of crypto for completing modules on selected assets — a genuinely effective onboarding device, if also a marketing one. The tone is deliberately non-technical and it works: the reason a first-time buyer can navigate Coinbase without help is that the education is wired into the product rather than parked in a separate portal.
Research and analytics are thinner. Asset pages carry price history, market cap, supply and a short description; Coinbase publishes asset ratings and reviews, and the equities product surfaces Morningstar data under its own disclosure. Coinbase Institutional publishes periodic market commentary that is well regarded, but it is written for allocators, not for someone deciding whether to buy Solana this week.
What is missing relative to Kraken is a screener worth the name, on-chain analytics, portfolio attribution and a serious charting stack. Coinbase Advanced gives you candles and depth; it does not give you indicators worth building a strategy on. Traders overwhelmingly pair Coinbase with an external charting tool.
The honest framing: Coinbase teaches you what crypto is better than anyone in the industry, and tells you less about what to do next than most of its competitors.
Customer support
This is where the score is earned, and it is the least flattering part of the record.
On paper the coverage is strong: 24/7 live chat and phone, an email and ticket queue, and a large self-service knowledge base, with priority routing for Coinbase One Preferred members and a concierge tier for Premium. Coinbase has also moved account-recovery and fraud workflows into automated flows that resolve common cases without human contact.
In practice, support is the dominant theme in Coinbase's negative public reviews, and has been for years — long waits, scripted responses, and account restrictions that are difficult to get lifted. The pattern is familiar: excellent product, thin service, with the gap widening exactly when it matters most, during a lockout or a disputed transaction.
The May 2025 breach makes this more than a satisfaction issue. Criminals did not break Coinbase's systems; they bribed outsourced support agents to copy customer data straight out of the support tooling. Coinbase's own remediation list — opening a new US support hub, adding monitoring across all locations, increasing investment in insider-threat detection — is an implicit acknowledgement that the support organisation was the weak link.
Two practical consequences. First, expect Coinbase to phone you never: the company states flatly that it will never call or text asking you to move funds, and any such contact is fraud. Second, if support quality is high on your list, note that Coinbase's answer is a paid subscription tier rather than a better baseline — priority queues start at Coinbase One Preferred.
Frequently asked questions
Because the headline number is not the whole price. Simple buy and sell orders carry a spread inside the quoted price plus a Coinbase fee that varies by payment method, order size, jurisdiction and asset and is only shown on the preview screen. Simple limit orders add a flat 1% execution fee on each buy and each sell. Switching to Coinbase Advanced removes the spread entirely and prices against the order book instead, which is usually far cheaper for anything above a token amount.
It depends entirely on how you trade. Coinbase One zeroes the trading fee on simple crypto trades up to USD 500 a month on Basic, USD 10,000 on Preferred and without limit on Premium, and adds 3.5% USDC rewards plus a 5–15% staking boost. But it does not remove the spread and does not waive the 1% limit-order execution fee, and the zero-fee benefit does not extend to Coinbase Advanced. If your activity is regular simple buying and you hold USDC or staked assets, it can pay for itself. If you already trade on Advanced, the zero-fee part is worth nothing to you — what remains is the 25% rebate on Advanced spot fees, which Preferred caps at USD 100 a month and Premium does not cap.
Since 23 October 2025 in Germany and 22 September 2025 in Austria, crypto services are provided by Coinbase Luxembourg S.A. under a MiCA Crypto-Asset Service Provider authorisation from the CSSF, passported across the EEA. E-money services remain with Coinbase Ireland Limited under the Central Bank of Ireland. MiCA requires segregation, custody standards and disclosure — but it creates no compensation scheme. Your crypto is not covered by a deposit guarantee or by an investor compensation fund. Coinbase carries private crime insurance covering a portion of assets against theft, and states losses could exceed recoveries.
No. Coinbase Capital Markets Corp, a FINRA and SIPC member, offers stocks and ETFs to US customers and — arranged by CB Payments Ltd under FCA FRN 1045733 — US stocks, but no ETFs or funds, to UK customers. There is no EEA equities offering. A German or Austrian investor who wants shares and crypto in one account is looking at Bitpanda, not Coinbase.
The standard commission is 35% of the rewards you receive on ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ. Coinbase One members pay 31.75% on Basic, 28.5% on Preferred and 25.25% on Premium — on ADA, ATOM, DOT, ETH, SOL and XTZ. AVAX and MATIC stay at the standard 35%. There is no fee to stake, and no fee to unstake if you wait out the network's unbonding period; instant unstaking carries a fee disclosed at the time of the request. For comparison, Kraken charges 20% on flexible on-chain staking.
In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that criminals had bribed a group of overseas customer-support agents to copy account data for less than 1% of monthly transacting users — names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, masked SSN and bank identifiers, government-ID images and balance snapshots. Passwords, 2FA codes, private keys and funds were not exposed, and Coinbase Prime was untouched. Coinbase refused the USD 20 million ransom, established a USD 20 million reward fund, fired the insiders and committed to reimbursing customers tricked into sending funds. It still matters because the affected customers' identity data is permanently in circulation, so impersonation attempts targeting Coinbase users remain elevated.
