Risk warning: CFDs and leveraged products are complex instruments and come with a high risk of losing money rapidly. Investments can fall in value. Past performance is not an indicator of future results.

Our verdict
Robinhood is the correct choice for a cost-sensitive trader who knows what they want to buy and does not need anyone to help them decide. If you trade equity options in volume, the absence of a per-contract commission is worth hundreds of dollars a year against Schwab or Fidelity at USD 0.65 apiece, and the margin rates are the lowest in the US retail market by a wide margin. The app is the best in the industry and the account opens in minutes. It is the wrong choice if you need research to form a view — there is no economic calendar, no sector heat map and little fundamental depth — if you want bonds, mutual funds or international shares, if you need to reach a human quickly when something breaks, or if you weigh a broker's compliance record heavily. Four separate regulatory settlements since 2020, the March 2020 outages and the January 2021 trading restrictions are not ancient history, and they are exactly the kind of failure that only matters on the worst day of the year. Use it as a low-cost execution venue, not as your only broker.

Pros & cons
Pros
8- Equity and ETF options carry no commission and no per-contract fee — only about USD 0.04 per contract of pass-through, against USD 0.65 at Schwab and Fidelity
- USD 0 commission on US stocks and ETFs, fractional orders from USD 1, and no account minimum
- The lowest retail margin rates in the US market, 5.25% on balances up to USD 50,000 on a standard account as well as on Gold (rates as of 16 September 2026), with the first USD 1,000 of margin interest-free for USD 5/month Gold subscribers
- Robinhood Gold pays 3.35% APY on eligible uninvested brokerage cash with no cap and no minimum — far above Schwab's default sweep
- Retirement accounts with a 1% contribution match, rising to 3% for Gold members — no other major US broker matches IRA contributions at all
- Futures at USD 0.75 per contract per side (USD 0.50 for Gold), plus index options at USD 0.50 (USD 0.35 for Gold)
- The mobile app is the benchmark for the category, with 90+ technical indicators and genuine feature parity with the web platform
- Around 22 cryptocurrencies alongside equities in the same account, plus prediction markets — an unusually broad retail shelf for one login
Cons
6- Four significant regulatory settlements since 2020 — SEC USD 65m in 2020, FINRA USD 57m in 2021, NYDFS USD 30m in 2022 and FINRA USD 26m plus USD 3.75m restitution in 2025 — covering order-flow disclosure, supervision, AML and reporting failures
- USD 100 to transfer your account out, versus USD 0 at Fidelity — a deliberate exit cost, and one of the most common complaints on public review sites
- No bonds, no mutual funds, no international exchange access and no forex; the equity universe stops at US listings and ADRs
- Research is thin: no economic calendar, no sector heat maps, no yield curve tools and limited fundamental data, with AI Digests reserved for Gold
- Support has no direct phone line for prospective clients and no branches — it runs on in-app chat and callback requests, which is a poor fit for anything urgent
- No conditional order types or backtesting on any platform

Full review: Robinhood
Fees and what they cost in practice
Robinhood is the cheapest broker in this comparison, and the gap is largest exactly where it matters most.
Options are the headline. Equity and ETF options carry no commission and no per-contract fee — you pay only around USD 0.04 per contract of combined exchange and regulatory pass-through. Schwab and Fidelity both charge USD 0.65 per contract. A trader running 40 contracts a month pays roughly USD 312 a year at those brokers and under USD 20 here. Index options are the exception at USD 0.50 per contract (USD 0.35 for Gold) plus symbol-specific exchange fees — SPX runs about USD 0.57–0.66.
Equities: USD 0, with fractional orders from USD 1. Sell orders carry the standard regulatory pass-throughs — the SEC fee at USD 20.60 per USD 1m of principal (waived at or below USD 500) and the FINRA trading activity fee at USD 0.000195 per share (waived at or below 50 shares).
Futures: USD 0.75 per contract per side, USD 0.50 for Gold, plus exchange and NFA fees. Schwab charges USD 2.25.
Margin is the other structural advantage: a variable rate of 5.25% on settled margin balances up to USD 50,000 (the tier rate applies to the whole balance and falls to 4.20% above USD 50m; rates as of 16 September 2026), against roughly 11.8% at Schwab. You do not need Robinhood Gold for it — eligible customers with a portfolio value of at least USD 2,000 pay the same rate on a standard account. What the USD 5/month subscription adds is that the first USD 1,000 of margin is interest-free, and Gold also pays 3.35% APY on eligible idle cash.
Where it gets expensive: USD 100 to transfer your account out, USD 25 for a domestic wire, USD 20 for an overnight cheque, and an unquantified spread on crypto — market-maker-routed orders show no commission, while Smart Exchange Routing carries volume-tiered fees starting at 0.85%.
Safety and regulation
Robinhood Markets, Inc. has been listed on Nasdaq under HOOD since July 2021 and is an S&P 500 constituent, so its accounts are public and audited. The brokerage stack is Robinhood Financial LLC as introducing broker and Robinhood Securities LLC as clearing broker, both SEC-registered and FINRA members; Robinhood Derivatives, LLC handles futures under CFTC oversight via NFA membership. Securities accounts carry SIPC protection up to USD 500,000 including a USD 250,000 cash sublimit. Crypto held with Robinhood Crypto is not a security and carries no SIPC protection.
Internationally, Robinhood U.K. Ltd is authorised by the FCA under FRN 823590. Read the UK protection disclosures carefully: brokerage assets are held by Robinhood Securities in the US and rely on US protections rather than FSCS, while cash in a stocks and shares ISA is held by Quai Investment Services Ltd where FSCS rules do apply. Robinhood Europe, UAB holds MiFID and MiCA authorisations from the Bank of Lithuania.
The part that requires an honest reckoning is the enforcement record. In 2020 the SEC extracted USD 65m over misleading payment-for-order-flow and execution-quality disclosure. In 2021 FINRA imposed USD 57m plus roughly USD 12.6m of restitution — its largest penalty at the time — covering systemic supervisory failures, misleading account information and the March 2020 outages. In 2022 NYDFS fined Robinhood Crypto USD 30m for AML and cybersecurity failures. In 2025 FINRA imposed a further USD 26m plus USD 3.75m of restitution for AML programme failures, more than 17,200 inaccurate blue-sheet submissions covering over 216 million transactions, and unclear disclosure of order collaring.
None of that means client assets are at risk today. It does mean the operational and disclosure discipline has repeatedly fallen short, and those failures cluster on volatile days — which is when you need them not to.
Trading platforms
The mobile app is the product, and it remains the best consumer trading interface anyone has built. Order entry is two taps. Charts carry more than 90 technical indicators. Options chains, crypto, futures and prediction markets all live behind the same navigation without the app feeling cluttered. There is an Apple Watch companion. Rivals have spent a decade copying it.
Robinhood Web is essentially a mirror of the app rather than a separate product — the same information architecture on a larger canvas.
Robinhood Legend is the answer to thinkorswim, and it is a partial one. It is browser-based, with multi-chart layouts, faster data and better options tooling than the standard app. But it is not a downloadable desktop client, and the omissions are structural: no backtesting, no strategy scripting language, no conditional order types, no paper trading. You cannot build a rule, test it against history and deploy it — every one of those steps has to happen in your head or in another tool.
The practical read: Robinhood is superb at execution and weak at preparation. If you arrive knowing what you want to trade, no platform gets you filled faster or cheaper. If you expect the platform to help you construct and validate a strategy, thinkorswim does that and Legend does not.
Markets and products
Robinhood's shelf is unusually wide across modern asset types and unusually narrow across traditional ones.
What is there: US-listed stocks and ETFs with fractional orders from USD 1; equity and ETF options with no per-contract commission; index options; futures across equity indices, energy, metals and rates; around 22 cryptocurrencies in the same account; and prediction markets, where Robinhood ranked first in 2026 broker testing. Retirement accounts are available with a 1% contribution match, rising to 3% for Gold members, subject to a five-year vesting schedule — no other major US broker matches IRA contributions at all.
What is missing, and it is a lot:
- No bonds. There is no self-directed Treasury, corporate or municipal trading. Gold members can subscribe to a managed bond-ladder product, but that is a packaged portfolio, not a CUSIP you choose.
- No mutual funds. ETFs are the only pooled vehicle.
- No international exchange access. The equity universe stops at US listings and ADRs — you cannot buy a share directly on the LSE, Xetra or the TSE. Fidelity offers 25 markets; Schwab offers 12.
- No forex, no CFDs, no spread betting.
- No custodial, trust or business accounts.
That combination defines the customer. Robinhood is built for someone whose portfolio is US equities, options, crypto and a little leverage. It cannot hold a diversified multi-asset portfolio on its own.
Account opening and funding
This is Robinhood's strongest operational dimension. Opening an account takes minutes in-app: identity details, Social Security number, a short suitability questionnaire, and approval usually lands the same day. There is no minimum deposit. Options approval is granted in-app rather than through a separate paper process, which is materially faster than the incumbents.
Funding runs on linked bank transfer, with instant availability up to your instant-deposit limit — three times portfolio value for Gold members — while the transfer takes three to five business days to fully settle. Crypto can be transferred in and out on-chain. There is no cheque deposit and no card funding on the US brokerage.
Withdrawals are where the economics turn. ACH out is free and lands in one to three business days. A domestic wire costs USD 25 and overnight cheque delivery costs USD 20. Most importantly, transferring your account to another broker costs USD 100 — against USD 0 at Fidelity. That is one of the most frequently cited complaints on public review platforms, and it is worth understanding as a deliberate design decision before you open the account rather than after.
In the UK, Robinhood U.K. Ltd offers a brokerage account and a stocks and shares ISA, with GBP/USD conversion at 0.10% on weekdays and 0.30% from Friday 17:00 ET to Sunday 17:00 ET, as well as on US public holidays other than Christmas Day and New Year's Day; the fee is built into the exchange rate shown. In the EEA, Robinhood Europe, UAB operates under Bank of Lithuania authorisation with a narrower product set focused on crypto and tokenised assets.
Research and education
This is the weakest part of the proposition, and it is weak by design rather than by accident — the cost structure that makes options free does not leave room for a research desk.
What exists: a stock screener, an options strategy builder, the Investor's Guild editorial newsletter, Robinhood Snacks as a daily market digest, and Robinhood Cortex, an AI layer that turns market data into summarised insights. Gold members additionally get AI-generated Digests and access to third-party analyst material.
What does not exist, and these are not niche omissions: no economic calendar, no sector heat maps, no Treasury yield curve tools, no screening across fixed income, no consolidated analyst-opinion score, and no depth of fundamental data comparable to what Fidelity gives away free. If your process starts with a macro view or a screen across fundamentals, you cannot run it here.
Education follows the same shape. The Learn hub covers the basics competently and the app itself teaches by being legible — a beginner genuinely understands what an options position is doing because the interface shows it. But there is no structured curriculum, no webinar programme and — critically — no paper trading. The step from reading about a spread to placing one is taken with real money on the first attempt.
The honest framing: Robinhood assumes you form your view somewhere else and come here to execute it cheaply. For a lot of traders that is exactly the right division of labour. For anyone who wants a broker to be a source of analysis, it is disqualifying.
Customer support
Support is the clearest trade-off you accept in exchange for the pricing.
There is no branch network and no direct phone line for prospective clients. Existing account holders reach support through in-app chat or by requesting a callback, available 24/7. When the callback system works it works reasonably well — you are called back rather than held in a queue, which is a defensible design. The help centre is comprehensive and well written.
The problem is escalation. Complex issues — a disputed options assignment, a restricted account, a corporate action handled incorrectly, a transfer that has stalled — go into a queue that you cannot bypass by calling a specialist desk, because there isn't one you can dial. Schwab and Fidelity both staff 24/7 phone lines with escalation paths and both operate hundreds of physical offices. Robinhood offers neither.
This matters more than a feature comparison suggests, because brokerage support is a tail-risk service. It is irrelevant on 360 days a year and decisive on the five when something goes wrong — and Robinhood's own history, from the March 2020 outages to the January 2021 trading restrictions, shows those days do arrive. The support model is built for a product that works, not for a product that occasionally fails.
Support is available in English and Spanish. There is no multilingual coverage beyond that on the US entity.
Frequently asked questions
Effectively, yes, for equity and ETF options. There is no commission and no per-contract fee — you pay only about USD 0.04 per contract of combined exchange and regulatory pass-through, against USD 0.65 per contract at Schwab and Fidelity. Index options are charged separately at USD 0.50 per contract, or USD 0.35 for Gold members, plus symbol-specific exchange fees. For a high-volume options trader this is the largest single cost advantage available in the US retail market.
Securities accounts are held at Robinhood Securities, a FINRA member, with SIPC protection of up to USD 500,000 per customer including a USD 250,000 cash sublimit, and client securities are segregated. Robinhood Markets is Nasdaq-listed and publishes audited accounts. Two caveats: crypto held with Robinhood Crypto is not a security and carries no SIPC protection, and the firm has settled four significant regulatory matters since 2020 covering disclosure, supervision, AML and reporting failures. SIPC protects against broker failure, never against investments losing value.
For USD 5 a month or USD 50 a year, Gold provides a 3.35% APY cash sweep on eligible uninvested brokerage cash with no cap or minimum, the first USD 1,000 of margin interest-free (margin itself is available without Gold, at the same rate), index options at USD 0.35 instead of USD 0.50 and futures at USD 0.50 instead of USD 0.75, instant deposits up to three times portfolio value, a 3% IRA contribution match instead of 1%, and AI-generated research Digests. If you hold meaningful cash, it pays for itself quickly; the margin benefit alone covers the fee only if you keep about USD 1,000 or more borrowed all year (roughly USD 53 of interest saved at 5.25%, against USD 50 a year).
The USD 100 outgoing ACATS fee is Robinhood's standard charge for a full account transfer to another broker, and it is charged whether the transfer is full or partial. It is one of the most common complaints on public review sites, particularly because Fidelity charges nothing for the same operation. If you expect to consolidate accounts later, price that exit cost in at the start — it is the clearest example of the trade-off behind the zero-commission model.
No. There is no self-directed bond, Treasury or CD trading and no mutual funds at all. Gold members can subscribe to a managed bond-ladder product, but that is a packaged portfolio rather than the ability to buy an individual CUSIP. ETFs are the only pooled vehicle available. If your portfolio needs a bond ladder or a specific mutual fund, you will need a second broker.
Partly. Robinhood U.K. Ltd is FCA-authorised under FRN 823590 and offers a brokerage account and a stocks and shares ISA covering US-listed shares and ADRs, with GBP/USD conversion at 0.10% on weekdays and 0.30% from Friday 17:00 ET to Sunday 17:00 ET, as well as on US public holidays other than Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Robinhood Europe, UAB operates across the EEA under Bank of Lithuania MiFID and MiCA authorisations with a narrower product set. Canada, Switzerland, Australia and most of Asia are not served.
