Our verdict
Wealthsimple has spent a decade turning a robo-advisor into something closer to a full financial operating system, and the trading side is now genuinely competitive rather than merely cheap. Free equity options across every tier is a first in Canada and a real cost advantage for anyone selling covered calls or running spreads. Futures at USD 1 a contract with free real-time data undercuts every domestic competitor. Free outgoing transfers, meaningful interest on cash, and margin at prime or better are the kind of details that quietly beat the banks. What you give up is depth. There is no desktop terminal, no Level 2 order book, no API, no bonds, no GICs, no mutual funds and no professional research stack — if you want to screen 3,000 names on fundamentals or model a bond ladder, this is not the account. And the pricing rewards balance: at the Core tier the crypto spread starts at 2%, the USD account costs CAD 10 a month, and cash pays 1.25% against Generation's 2.25%. Wealthsimple is superb for an app-first investor consolidating everything in one place, and merely adequate for a research-driven stock picker.
Best for
- App-first Canadian investors
- Options sellers and covered-call writers
- Consolidating banking, investing and crypto
- Registered account investing (TFSA, RRSP, FHSA)
- Investors holding cash between trades
Less suitable for
- Fixed-income investors wanting bonds or GICs
- Research-driven fundamental stock pickers
- Traders needing a desktop terminal or API
- High-volume crypto traders below the Generation tier
Pros & cons
Pros
8- CAD 0 commission on Canadian and US stocks and ETFs, plus USD 0 per equity and ETF options contract on every tier, including free assignment
- Futures at USD 1 per contract with free real-time futures market data — no Canadian competitor matches that combination
- CAD 0 to transfer your account out, where Questrade, Qtrade and the banks all charge CAD 150
- Best-rated broker app in Canada at 4.6 on the App Store across roughly 130,000 ratings, with real-time streaming quotes free to everyone
- 24/5 trading on eligible US stocks and ETFs and 24/7 on gold and crypto — the longest trading hours available in Canada
- Margin at prime + 0.5% on Core and prime − 0.5% on Generation, well under the big banks
- CIRO-regulated with CIPF coverage of CAD 1,000,000 per account category, backed by Power Corporation of Canada with a 52.4% stake
- Interest on chequing balances of 1.25% to 2.25% by tier, against effectively 0% on idle cash at most brokers
Cons
6- The 1.5% CAD/USD conversion is the same as Questrade's. A USD account (CAD 10 a month on Core, free on Premium from CAD 100,000) removes it on the US trades themselves but not on the CAD you convert into it, which still costs 1.5% per transaction under CAD 10,000 and falls to 0% only from CAD 100,000; journalling at CAD 9.95 is the other way round it
- Crypto costs 2.0% per trade at the Core tier — a round trip is 4% — and the advertised 0.05% requires CAD 10 million of 30-day volume; staking takes 30% of rewards before validator fees
- No bonds, no GICs and no mutual funds anywhere in the self-directed account, so a fixed-income allocation has to be built entirely from ETFs
- No desktop platform, no Level 2 depth, no API and no paper-trading account; the research stack is news and basic charts rather than screeners and analyst coverage
- The crypto assets themselves sit outside CIPF protection and are held in trust instead — only the cash balance in a crypto account is covered, and the cold-storage insurance cited is USD 75 million per custodial partner, not per client
- Meaningful benefits are gated behind CAD 100,000 and CAD 500,000 balances, so the sticker price a small account actually pays is the least attractive version of the offer

| Trading costs | ||
| Stocks (per order) | Free | CAD 0 commission on all listed Canadian and US securities, across the TSX, TSX Venture, Cboe Canada, CSE, NYSE, Nasdaq and Cboe, plus a limited set of OTC-listed ADRs. Fractional orders are supported and execute at the displayed price or better. Account opening, closing and outgoing transfers to another institution are also CAD 0. |
| US stocks | Free | No commission, but a 1.5% currency conversion applies when you trade US-listed securities out of a CAD account, on the purchase and again on the sale. A USD account removes it on the US trades themselves, not the cost of getting CAD into it: only USD you already hold moves in free, and converting CAD cash into the USD account costs 1.5% per transaction under CAD 10,000, tapering to 0% only from CAD 100,000. The USD account costs CAD 10 a month on the Core tier and is free on Premium and Generation, which waive the account fee but not the conversion fee. |
| ETFs | Free | CAD 0 on all Canadian and US listed ETFs, buy and sell. This is a self-directed trade, distinct from the managed Wealthsimple Portfolio service, which charges 0.5% a year on Core, 0.4% on Premium and 0.2%–0.4% on Generation. |
| Options (per contract) | Free | USD 0 contract fee on equity and ETF options for every tier — Core, Premium and Generation alike — plus a USD 0 assignment fee and USD 0 auto-exercise. Index options are priced separately: SPX and SPXW USD 1, VIX USD 1, RUT and RUTW USD 0.50, XSP USD 0.25, NDX USD 1, DJX USD 0.25 per contract. Early exercise and do-not-exercise instructions cost USD 45 each. |
| Futures (per contract) | US$1 | USD 1 per contract, plus the USD 0.02 NFA fee per contract and pass-through exchange fees. Real-time futures market data is free, which is unusual in Canada. Execution and charting are powered by Plus500. Micro, mini and standard contract sizes on index, commodity and rate underlyings, trading Sunday evening to Friday afternoon ET. |

Equity margin follows CIRO requirements — a 30% requirement on eligible securities gives roughly 3.3x buying power, 50% on most others gives 2x. Futures are far more leveraged, with Wealthsimple's own material describing 10:1 to 20:1 as typical and losses that can exceed the initial margin deposit. Options strategies on margin are currently limited to US assets.

Fees: what Wealthsimple Trade actually costs
Wealthsimple's own fee schedule is unusually readable, and the headline numbers are real.
Listed stocks and ETFs cost CAD 0 to buy and sell across the TSX, TSX Venture, Cboe Canada, CSE, NYSE, Nasdaq and Cboe. Equity and ETF options contracts cost USD 0 on every tier — Core, Premium and Generation alike — with a USD 0 assignment fee and USD 0 auto-exercise. That is the first genuinely free equity-options desk in Canada and it is not a promotional rate. Index options are the exception: SPX and SPXW cost USD 1 per contract, VIX USD 1, RUT and RUTW USD 0.50, XSP USD 0.25, NDX USD 1 and DJX USD 0.25.
Futures cost USD 1 per contract plus a USD 0.02 NFA fee and pass-through exchange fees, and — the part competitors cannot match — real-time futures market data is free. Event contracts on the prediction-markets product cost USD 0.02 each. Gold bullion carries a 1% trading fee on each side.
Then the costs that are easy to miss:
- Currency conversion: 1.5% on the corporate exchange rate whenever a trade in a CAD account converts between CAD and USD — on the purchase and again on the sale
- USD account: CAD 10 a month on Core, free on Premium and Generation. It removes the conversion on US trades, not on the cash you convert into it: conversions between the CAD and USD accounts taper per transaction, counted in the currency you convert from — 1.5% under 10,000, 1.0% from 10,000 to 24,999.99, 0.5% from 25,000 to 99,999.99, and 0% from 100,000
- Crypto: 2.0% baseline on Core, 1.0% Premium, 0.5% Generation, with a 30-day volume ladder that only reaches the advertised 0.05% above CAD 10 million of volume
- Instant withdrawal: 2.5% — the standard EFT withdrawal is free
- Journalling: CAD 9.95, broker-assisted phone trade CAD 45, manual wire CAD 30, paper statement CAD 20
What is genuinely absent matters as much: no inactivity fee, no account opening or closing fee, and no outgoing transfer fee. That last one is worth naming. Questrade and Qtrade both charge CAD 150 to move your account; Wealthsimple charges nothing. For a broker whose business model depends on you staying, that is an unusually confident piece of pricing.
Safety and regulation
The self-directed brokerage is Wealthsimple Investments Inc., a dealer member of the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF). CIPF cover is CAD 1,000,000 for all general accounts combined, plus a separate CAD 1,000,000 for all registered retirement accounts combined, plus a separate CAD 1,000,000 for RESPs where you are the subscriber. Cash on the chequing side is a different arrangement and needs reading carefully. Wealthsimple Payments Inc. is not itself a CDIC member; it places the money in trust with CDIC member banks, and CDIC insures CAD 100,000 per beneficiary per member institution. The CAD 1,000,000 figure Wealthsimple advertises is what that produces once funds are spread across at least ten member institutions, and it applies to the personal chequing account only. The Registered Savings Account carries the CAD 100,000 per-institution cover and is explicitly not CIPF-protected; the USD savings account makes no CDIC claim at all. As always, these schemes cover the failure of the institution, not the value of your investments.
Two things about the corporate picture. Wealthsimple was founded in September 2014 by Michael Katchen, Rudy Adler and Brett Huneycutt and is headquartered in Toronto. It is not itself listed — but Power Corporation of Canada holds roughly 52.4% through Power Financial, IGM Financial and Sagard's Portage Ventures, and Power Corporation is a listed company with public financials. That is a meaningfully stronger backer than most fintechs have, though it is one step removed from the transparency of a listed broker. Scale is no longer a question: CAD 156 billion under administration across 3.6 million clients as of June 2026, having passed CAD 100 billion in 2025, three years ahead of its own target.
The crypto asymmetry is the thing to understand. The crypto business used to sit in its own company, Wealthsimple Digital Assets Inc., registered with Canadian securities regulators as a restricted dealer and the first regulated crypto platform in Canada. That company amalgamated into Wealthsimple Investments Inc. on 1 January 2024, so crypto now runs inside the CIRO dealer alongside the equity account — and one practical consequence is that the cash balance in a crypto account is CIPF-covered. The crypto assets themselves are still not covered by CIPF; they are held in trust for you instead. Beyond that the protection cited is commercial: the majority of coins are held in offline cold storage with regulated custodial partners carrying over USD 75 million of insurance each, with hot wallets backed by a Coincover arrangement. That is a real safeguard, but it is per custodian, not per client, and it is insurance rather than a statutory compensation scheme. Treat the coins themselves as a structurally different risk from the securities sitting beside them in the same app.
Platforms and the active-trading tier
Wealthsimple is an app company that grew a brokerage, and the platform reflects that in both directions.
The mobile app is the primary surface and the best consumer product in Canadian finance — 4.6 on the Canadian App Store across roughly 130,000 ratings, an order of magnitude more feedback than any competitor and a rating none of them approach. Trading, options chains, crypto, gold, futures, prediction markets, chequing, the credit card and tax filing all live in one place. Real-time streaming quotes are free to everyone, which Wealthsimple points out is not true of some larger rivals.
The web platform carries the same functionality with a fuller trading dashboard, options chains and multi-leg tickets. An active-trading layer unlocks on volume rather than subscription and adds keyboard hot keys, priority support with phone pickup under a minute and email replies within four hours, free broker-assisted phone trades that otherwise cost CAD 45, beta access to new tools, and a 3% match on eligible transfers above 50 trades a month.
Options support is more serious than the app's simplicity suggests: covered calls, secured puts, vertical and calendar spreads, diagonals, long straddles and strangles, iron butterflies and iron condors are all supported, with a strategy picker in development. Futures execution and charting are powered by Plus500 and include stop-loss orders and advanced charts.
What is missing is the professional tier. There is no desktop terminal, no Level 2 order book, no order-routing control, no API and no paper-trading environment. Charting is functional rather than deep, and there is no equivalent to Questrade Pro's time-and-sales or one-second candles. A day trader reading the tape will find this platform thin; a swing trader placing three orders a week will find it faster and pleasanter than anything else in Canada.
Markets and products
Wealthsimple's product range is modern and lopsided — excellent at everything invented in the last fifteen years, absent on everything older.
What is there:
- Stocks and ETFs on the TSX, TSX Venture, Cboe Canada, CSE, NYSE, Nasdaq and Cboe, plus a limited set of OTC-listed ADRs, with fractional shares and 24/5 trading on eligible US names (Sunday 20:00 to Friday 20:00 ET)
- Options on US-listed equities and ETFs at USD 0 per contract, plus SPX, VIX, XSP, RUT, NDX and DJX index contracts
- Futures in micro, mini and standard sizes on index, commodity and rate underlyings at USD 1 a contract
- Crypto — Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and 170+ other coins, with staking, 24/7 trading and a Web3 wallet
- Gold bullion at a 1% trading fee, tradable 24/7
- Prediction markets through event contracts at USD 0.02 each
- IPO access for retail allocations, and a portfolio line of credit against your holdings
What is not there, and it is a real gap: no individual bonds, no GICs, no mutual funds, no forex or CFDs, and no warrants. A Canadian investor building a conventional balanced portfolio has to express the entire fixed-income allocation through bond ETFs, and cannot ladder GICs inside the same account. There is also no international equity access beyond Canada, the US and those ADRs — no London, no Frankfurt, no Tokyo.
Alongside the self-directed account sit managed portfolios (Classic, Income, Summit and a Private Market fund) charging 0.5% a year on Core, 0.4% on Premium and 0.2%–0.4% on Generation, plus an Automated Investing service at 0.25% capped at CAD 250 per account per year. These are a different product with a different fee model and should not be confused with the CAD 0 self-directed trades.
Account opening, funding and the tier system
Opening takes about three minutes, is entirely in-app, and requires no minimum balance — the Core tier is documented as starting at CAD 1. Registered accounts (RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP, LIRA, RRIF), cash accounts and margin accounts are all available, and transferring an existing account in is handled digitally with a 1% match on eligible transfers as a standing promotion.
Funding is fast by Canadian standards. Electronic deposits credit instantly up to CAD 50,000 on Core and up to CAD 250,000 on Premium and Generation — a limit applied across your managed, self-directed and crypto accounts, with the actual figure depending on your deposit history, net deposits and other factors Wealthsimple uses. Money moves between your own Wealthsimple accounts in seconds, and both EFT deposits and EFT withdrawals are free. A manual wire costs CAD 30 in either direction. If you want money out the same day rather than in one to three business days, the instant withdrawal fee is 2.5% — expensive enough that it should be a genuine emergency, not a habit.
The tier system is the single most important thing to model before you open an account. Everything meaningful scales with the assets you hold across the platform:
| Tier | Assets | Chequing interest | Margin rate | Crypto baseline | USD account |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Core | CAD 1+ | 1.25% | Prime + 0.5% | 2.0% | CAD 10/month |
| Premium | CAD 100,000+ | 1.75% | Prime + 0% | 1.0% | Free |
| Generation | CAD 500,000+ | 2.25% | Prime − 0.5% | 0.5% | Free |
At CAD 4.45% CAD prime and 7% USD prime (18 September 2026), that is 4.95% CAD margin on Core down to 3.95% on Generation, against a standard band of 6.00% to 6.50% at the five big-bank brokerages, each read from its own published rate sheet on 3 September 2026 (BMO 6.00%, Scotia 6.00–6.10%, CIBC 6.00–6.25%, RBC 6.50%, TD 6.50%). The commission-free trading is identical at every level, so a small account is not penalised on execution — but it does pay double the crypto spread and CAD 120 a year for a USD account that a Premium client gets free.
Research and education
This is the weakest part of the offer, and it is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight.
Research amounts to real-time streaming quotes (free to everyone, which is genuinely more than several competitors give), an in-app news feed with a disclosed sourcing policy, basic charting, and company pages with headline financial data. There is no third-party analyst research in the way Qtrade bundles Morningstar recommendations and target prices on every name. There is no fundamental screener capable of filtering thousands of securities on valuation, growth or quality metrics. There is no technical screener, no bond scanner, no options analytics suite with implied-volatility surfaces or probability cones. If your process starts with a screen, you will run it somewhere else and place the trade here.
Education, by contrast, is a real strength — because Wealthsimple treats it as content marketing and is good at it. The Learn library covers investing basics, tax, registered accounts and market mechanics in clear, non-patronising Canadian English. The TLDR newsletter is widely read. The Trade Show is a video series that has featured serious practitioners, including a long-form conversation with tastytrade co-founder Tom Sosnoff on options. The options pages themselves are unusually honest: every strategy is described with its obligation as well as its upside, and the futures page carries an explicit comparison table noting that futures losses can exceed the initial margin deposit.
The gap that education cannot close is practice. There is no paper-trading account, so a first-time options seller learns the mechanics of assignment with real capital. Given that Wealthsimple has made options free and therefore frictionless to start, the absence of a risk-free sandbox is the most defensible criticism of the whole product.
Customer support
Support has improved substantially from the Wealthsimple Trade of a few years ago, when chat was the only route and queues ran into days.
Today the channels are in-app live chat available around the clock, email, and phone on 1-855-255-9038, in English and French. The chat widget is the default entry point and handles most account, funding and tax-slip questions competently. Security incidents — a suspected compromised account — are routed through the same chat with priority handling.
The differentiator is the active-trader service tier. Clients trading more than 50 times a month get priority routing with phone pickup in under a minute and email replies within four hours, plus free broker-assisted phone trades through the licensed trade desk that otherwise cost CAD 45. Premium and Generation clients get their own escalation paths and, at Generation, access to human advice as part of the package. This is a sensible structure: the people whose problems are urgent and expensive get the fastest lane.
The weakness is what happens below those tiers. A Core client with a complex problem — a transfer stuck at another institution, a corporate action processed oddly, a contribution-room dispute with the CRA — is working through chat with a generalist agent, and the resolution can take several rounds. Wealthsimple's very high App Store rating measures satisfaction with a product that mostly works; it is not a measure of how the firm handles the cases where it does not.
Compared with the field: Wealthsimple's chat availability beats Qtrade, which offers no live chat at all and closes at 20:00 ET. Qtrade's phone service, though, has repeatedly won independent Canadian service rankings for depth of knowledge on registered-account and tax questions, and that difference still shows when the question gets hard.
Frequently asked questions
For US-listed equity and ETF options, yes — USD 0 per contract on the Core, Premium and Generation tiers alike, with USD 0 assignment and USD 0 auto-exercise. That makes Wealthsimple the first genuinely free equity options desk in Canada. Index options are priced separately: SPX and SPXW at USD 1 per contract, VIX at USD 1, RUT and RUTW at USD 0.50, XSP at USD 0.25, NDX at USD 1 and DJX at USD 0.25. Early exercise and do-not-exercise instructions cost USD 45 each, so let contracts expire or close them in the market rather than calling the desk.
Three ways. Open a USD account, which removes the conversion fee on the US trades themselves — that costs CAD 10 a month on Core and is free on Premium (CAD 100,000+) and Generation (CAD 500,000+). It does not remove the cost of getting CAD into the account: only USD you already hold moves in free, and converting CAD cash into it, or back, is charged per transaction. Use Norbert's Gambit by journalling a dual-listed ETF, at CAD 9.95 per request. Or size your conversions: cash conversions between the CAD and USD accounts cost 1.5% under 10,000, 1.0% from 10,000 to 24,999.99, 0.5% from 25,000 to 99,999.99 and 0% from 100,000 per transaction, counted in the currency you convert from. A first CAD 8,000 converted into a USD account therefore costs the same 1.5% as a trade in a CAD account. The USD account earns its keep when you convert larger single amounts, move in USD you already hold, or buy and sell US securities repeatedly without converting back each time, because a CAD account charges 1.5% on the purchase and again on the sale.
Not entirely, and the distinction is worth getting right. Stocks, ETFs, options and futures sit with Wealthsimple Investments Inc., a CIRO dealer with CIPF coverage of CAD 1,000,000 per account category. Crypto is run by that same dealer since Wealthsimple Digital Assets Inc. amalgamated into Wealthsimple Investments Inc. on 1 January 2024, which is why the cash balance in a crypto account is now CIPF-covered as well. The crypto assets themselves are not: they are held in trust for you, and the further protection is commercial insurance — most coins in offline cold storage with regulated custodians carrying over USD 75 million of cover each, plus a Coincover arrangement on hot wallets. That is meaningful, but it is per custodian rather than per client.
Not in the self-directed account. There is no bond desk, no GIC shelf and no mutual funds — the entire fixed-income allocation has to be built from bond ETFs, which trade commission-free. If you want to ladder GICs or hold individual government and corporate paper to maturity, Qtrade prices fixed income at CAD 1 per CAD 1,000 face value with a CAD 24.99 minimum, and Questrade sells bonds and GICs with a CAD 5,000 minimum. On this one dimension both are clearly ahead.
Commission-free stock, ETF and equity-option trading is identical on every tier, so a small account is never penalised on execution. Everything else scales with assets. Core (from CAD 1) pays 2.0% baseline on crypto, CAD 10 a month for a USD account, prime + 0.5% margin and earns 1.25% on chequing balances. Premium (CAD 100,000+) halves the crypto baseline to 1.0%, makes the USD account free, drops margin to prime + 0% and pays 1.75%. Generation (CAD 500,000+) reaches 0.5% crypto, prime − 0.5% margin, 2.25% chequing interest and a 15% rather than 30% staking fee.
Both charge CAD 0 on stocks and ETFs, CAD 0 on US equity options and 1.5% on currency conversion, so the decision is not about headline price. Choose Wealthsimple if you want the best app in Canada, futures at USD 1 a contract, spot crypto, interest on idle cash, margin at prime or better, and free outgoing transfers. Choose Questrade if you need bonds, GICs, mutual funds or pre-IPO access, or if you want Questrade Pro's Level 2 depth, time and sales and chart trading. Wealthsimple is the better consumer product; Questrade is the better instrument.
