Our verdict
For an active futures day trader, NinjaTrader on the lifetime licence is close to the cheapest legitimate route to the CME complex: USD 0.09 per side on a Micro E-mini is a fraction of what a general-purpose broker charges, and USD 50 intraday margin on the same contract makes small-account scalping structurally possible. The platform earns its reputation. Market Replay reconstructs a session tick by tick so you can rehearse execution against real order flow, the SuperDOM is a genuine professional ladder, and NinjaScript gives you a full C# environment plus thousands of third-party add-ons. It is a narrow product and you should treat it that way. NinjaTrader trades futures, options on futures, single stock futures and event contracts — no shares, no ETFs, no bonds, no spot crypto, no forex. Funds sit in CFTC-segregated accounts with no SIPC and no compensation scheme, which is standard for US futures but very different from a securities account. The pricing ladder is a commitment device: the free plan's USD 1.29 per side is unremarkable, so the economics only work if you pay USD 99 a month or USD 1,499 up front, and you should model that break-even honestly before you sign. Traders who want one account for a whole portfolio should look elsewhere; traders who live in the ladder should look here first.
Best for
- Futures day traders
- Order-flow and ladder traders
- Automated strategy developers
- Small-account micro futures traders
Less suitable for
- Long-term investors
- Stock and ETF buyers
- Diversified multi-asset portfolios
- Occasional traders
Pros & cons
Pros
7- USD 0.09 per side on micro futures and USD 0.59 on standard contracts under the USD 1,499 lifetime licence — among the lowest retail futures commissions available
- Intraday day-trading margins of USD 50 per Micro E-mini and USD 500 per E-mini contract make small-account futures trading viable
- Market Replay plays back a full session tick by tick, synchronised across charts and the ladder — the best execution-rehearsal tool in retail futures
- NinjaScript is a real C# development framework, not a scripting toy, with an ecosystem of thousands of third-party indicators, strategies and add-ons
- Free simulated trading with the full platform, strategy backtesting and no funding requirement
- Support runs 24/5 plus weekends with a dedicated 24-hour trade desk, and the site is localised into seven languages
- No deposit minimum to open a futures account; ACH and debit card funding from USD 5
Cons
7- Futures, options on futures, single stock futures and event contracts only — no shares, ETFs, bonds, funds, spot crypto or spot forex
- The headline commissions require paying for the platform: USD 1.29 per side on the free plan is ordinary, and the cheap rates cost USD 99 a month or USD 1,499 up front
- Customer funds are CFTC-segregated but carry no SIPC cover and no compensation scheme — segregation ring-fences money, it does not insure it
- Exchange, clearing and NFA fees are charged on top of every commission, and market depth or professional data feeds are billed separately
- The desktop platform is Windows-only and has a steep learning curve; the web and mobile builds are materially lighter
- A USD 35 Minimum Account Activity Fee hits free-plan accounts that log in but place no live trade within 30 days — USD 25 on plans held since before 20 June 2025
- NinjaTrader does not publish an eligible-country list on its public pages, so international applicants have to confirm their jurisdiction during onboarding

Futures leverage is a function of margin, not a fixed ratio. NinjaTrader advertises intraday day-trading margins of USD 50 per Micro E-mini contract and USD 500 per E-mini contract; overnight margin reverts to the exchange initial requirement, which is many multiples higher. Single stock futures are marketed at up to 6x leverage.

Full review: NinjaTrader
Fees and what they cost in practice
NinjaTrader's pricing is unusual: the commission you pay depends on which platform licence you buy. There are three tiers, and the gap between them is large.
| Plan | Licence cost | Standard futures | Micro futures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | USD 0 | USD 1.29 per side | USD 0.39 per side |
| Monthly | USD 99 per month | USD 0.99 per side | USD 0.29 per side |
| Lifetime | USD 1,499 one-off | USD 0.59 per side | USD 0.09 per side |
Every rate is per side, so a round turn is double the number shown, and exchange, clearing and NFA fees apply on top.
The break-even arithmetic is the whole decision. Moving from the free plan to the lifetime licence saves USD 0.30 per side on a micro contract. At 10 round turns a day — 20 sides — that is USD 6 a day, roughly USD 125 a month, so the USD 1,499 licence pays for itself in about a year of consistent activity. Trade five micro round turns a week and the free plan is the rational choice. Model your own volume before buying.
What is not in the headline number:
- Exchange and clearing fees on every contract, which on CME index products are often larger than NinjaTrader's own commission on the lifetime plan
- The NFA assessment fee per contract
- Market data beyond the real-time top-of-book included once the account is funded; depth-of-market and professional-status feeds are billed separately
- The Minimum Account Activity Fee of USD 35 on free-plan accounts that log in but place no live trade within 30 days (USD 25 on plans held since before 20 June 2025), plus the trade management charges the pricing page references
Margin. Intraday day-trading margin is advertised at USD 50 per Micro E-mini contract and USD 500 per E-mini. That is a commercial rate set by the broker, not a safety cushion: overnight positions revert to full exchange initial margin, which is many multiples higher, and a gap through your stop can leave a debit balance. All figures are for NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC, the US futures commission merchant.
Safety and regulation
NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC is registered with the CFTC as a futures commission merchant and is a member of the NFA under ID 0309379. It trades under several brand names — NinjaTrader, Kraken Derivatives US and Tradovate — all of which are the same FCM. A separate entity, NinjaTrader, LLC, develops the software; keeping the two apart matters when you read disclosures.
How your money is held. Customer funds are held in CFTC-segregated accounts, and the firm publishes daily statements of segregated funds alongside monthly net capital summaries and Form 1-FR-FCM excerpts. That level of routine public financial disclosure is a genuine strength — you can check the FCM's net capital position month by month, which you cannot do with most private brokers.
What you do not get. There is no SIPC coverage — SIPC applies to securities accounts, and this is a futures account. There is no compensation scheme equivalent to SIPC, the FSCS or an EU investor compensation fund. Segregation is a legal ring-fence that keeps customer money separate from the firm's own, but it is not insurance, and history shows segregation can fail in a fraud. Non-US clients get no additional local protection because they are onboarded onto the US entity.
Ownership. NinjaTrader is part of the Payward group — the company behind Kraken — following its acquisition, and NinjaTrader Clearing now also operates as Kraken Derivatives US. Payward is privately held, so there is no listed-company reporting at group level, though the FCM's own regulatory filings remain public. NinjaTrader Clearing additionally clears event contracts as an FCM member of Kalshi Klear LLC.
The company was founded in 2003 and states more than two million platform users. We do not describe any broker as safe or guaranteed; these are the facts on record.
Trading platforms
The desktop platform is why people come here, and it is built for one job: trading futures well.
The tools that matter:
- SuperDOM — a depth-of-market ladder with drag-and-drop order management, automatic stop and target attachment and self-tightening trailing stops. This is where ladder traders spend the session.
- Order Flow+ — volumetric bars, cumulative delta, volume profile and market depth mapping, aimed at reading buying and selling pressure rather than lagging indicators.
- Market Replay — downloads recorded tick data and plays a full session back in real time, synchronised across every chart and the ladder. You can rehearse execution against genuine historical order flow, pause, rewind and repeat. Nothing else at retail pricing does this as well.
- Strategy Analyzer — backtesting and optimisation against historical data, free on every plan.
- NinjaScript — the C# development framework. Custom indicators, automated strategies and full add-on applications with their own windows and menus. The ecosystem around it runs to thousands of third-party tools, which is a real network effect: if a technique exists in futures trading, someone has probably already coded it for NinjaTrader.
The limitations are real. The desktop build is Windows-only — Mac users run the web platform or a virtual machine. The learning curve is steep; the workspace, chart trader and strategy properties model all assume you will invest time. The web platform covers charting, order entry and position management from any browser but does not carry the full add-on ecosystem, and the mobile apps are competent for monitoring and adjustment with advanced charting and a mobile SuperDOM, but nobody should run a strategy from them.
Free simulated trading runs on the full platform, including Market Replay and Strategy Analyzer, before you fund anything.
Markets and products
This is a deliberately narrow product set, and the narrowness is the point.
Available:
- Futures — more than 100 contracts across CME Group (CME, CBOT, NYMEX, COMEX), Eurex, ICE and Coinbase Derivatives, covering equity indices, interest rates, currencies, energy, metals and agriculture, with the full micro contract range
- Options on futures — supported alongside the underlying contracts
- Single stock futures — cash-settled futures on individual large-cap US names from the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Russell 1000, including Apple, Amazon, Nvidia and Tesla, where one contract represents 100 shares and up to 6x leverage is marketed. Launched in 2026 and expanding.
- Event contracts — cleared through NinjaTrader Clearing as an FCM member of Kalshi Klear
- Crypto exposure — via CME and Coinbase Derivatives futures only
Not available:
- Cash shares and ETFs
- Equity and index options
- Bonds, mutual funds and any cash fixed income
- Spot cryptocurrency and spot forex
- Any non-USD account denomination
Trading runs nearly 23 hours a day, five days a week, which is a genuine advantage for anyone trading around European or Asian sessions. Single stock futures are the interesting recent addition: they give leveraged directional exposure to individual equities without options greeks, time decay or share ownership — but they are futures, with futures margin behaviour and no SIPC.
If you want one account for a whole portfolio, this is not it. If you want a specialist execution venue for the futures book and hold your investments elsewhere, the narrowness costs you nothing.
Account opening and funding
There is no deposit minimum to open a NinjaTrader futures account. The practical floor is set by margin, not by the broker: at USD 50 intraday margin per Micro E-mini contract, a few hundred dollars technically opens a position, though anyone funding that thin is one adverse move from a margin call.
Applications are online and most US applicants are approved same day to next business day. Because this is a futures account, expect the CFTC and NFA risk disclosures, an experience questionnaire and a suitability review rather than a two-minute signup. International applicants are onboarded onto the same US entity and take longer while documents are checked manually.
A caveat worth stating plainly: NinjaTrader does not publish an eligible-country list on its public site. It does accept international futures customers, and its site is localised into seven languages, but you should confirm your jurisdiction with the brokerage before you start rather than assume.
Funding. Accounts are USD only. Methods are ACH, wire and debit card, with a USD 5.00 minimum on ACH and debit transfers. Debit card deposits are near-instant, which is useful when a margin call arrives mid-session; ACH takes one to three business days and wires settle same day. Withdrawals typically take one to three business days.
The account fee schedule is public. ACH withdrawals are free; a domestic wire costs USD 30 and an international wire 30 units of the outgoing currency; currency conversion runs at 1% with a minimum of 10 units of the currency sold; a returned cheque costs USD 30. The item to plan around is the Minimum Account Activity Fee of USD 35, charged to free-plan accounts that log in but execute no live trade within 30 days — accounts on plans held since before 20 June 2025 pay USD 25. Confirm which market data subscriptions will be billed to the account before funding.
Research and education
NinjaTrader's education is platform-led rather than market-led, which suits the audience. There is no equity research, no analyst coverage, no fundamental screening and no economic research desk — because there are no equities to research. What you get instead is training on execution, order flow and system development.
Strong:
- Extensive platform documentation and help guides, covering everything from workspace setup to NinjaScript class references
- A large public library of tutorials, webinars and recorded sessions on the SuperDOM, Order Flow+ and strategy building
- The third-party ecosystem doubles as an education layer: thousands of published indicators and strategies, most with documentation and many open-source
- Market Replay is the best learning tool in the package. Practising execution against a recorded session with real order flow teaches more than any webinar, and it is free
- Free simulated trading with the full toolset and no funding requirement
Thin:
- Little content for genuine beginners on what futures are, how margin works or how contract expiry and rollover behave — the material assumes you already trade
- No market research or trade ideas of the kind a full-service broker publishes
- No portfolio, tax or asset-allocation education, which is consistent with the product but leaves gaps for anyone new to leverage
The blog covers contract specifications, rollover dates and platform releases usefully. For strategy development specifically, the NinjaScript documentation plus the community forums are the resource most users rely on, and they are better than the official material suggests.
Customer support
For a futures-only broker, support coverage is one of NinjaTrader's better features. Technical assistance runs 24/5 with weekend availability, and a separate 24-hour trade desk handles live orders and emergencies during the futures session — reachable on a direct Chicago number rather than through the general queue. That matters: futures trade nearly around the clock, and a platform failure with an open position at 02:00 needs a person, not a ticket.
Channels: phone (US toll-free plus the direct trade desk line), email and an online support portal. There is no live chat on the main brokerage pages.
Languages: the website and materials are published in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. Verify before relying on it that live phone support is available in your language and not just the documentation — the localisation is broader than the staffing on most desks.
In practice:
- Platform and NinjaScript questions are handled well, and the community forums resolve a large share of them without contacting anyone
- Trade desk staff are futures specialists — margin, rollover, expiry and liquidation questions get competent answers
- Account administration and international documentation are the slower path
- There is no relationship-manager tier for retail accounts
The main gap is transparency on eligibility rather than responsiveness: because the eligible-country list is not published, some routine questions that should be self-service require a call. Get fee and data-subscription answers in writing at onboarding.
Frequently asked questions
It depends entirely on volume. The lifetime licence saves USD 0.30 per side on micro contracts versus the free plan, so at 10 micro round turns a day — 20 sides — it saves about USD 125 a month and repays its USD 1,499 cost in roughly a year. The USD 99 monthly plan saves USD 0.10 per side versus free, so it needs about 990 sides a month — roughly 500 round turns — just to cover the subscription. Trade a handful of contracts a week and the free plan at USD 1.29 per side is the right answer. Run your own numbers before buying a licence.
No. NinjaTrader is a futures brokerage. You can trade futures, options on futures, single stock futures and event contracts. Single stock futures give leveraged directional exposure to individual US large caps — one contract represents 100 shares of names like Apple or Nvidia — but they are cash-settled futures, not share ownership, with futures margin behaviour and no dividends or voting rights. For cash equities, ETFs, bonds or funds you need a separate securities account.
Customer funds are held in CFTC-segregated accounts under NinjaTrader Clearing, LLC, an NFA member (ID 0309379) registered as a futures commission merchant. The firm publishes daily segregated funds statements and monthly net capital schedules. However, futures accounts carry no SIPC cover and there is no compensation scheme equivalent to SIPC, the FSCS or an EU investor compensation fund. Segregation is a legal ring-fence keeping your money separate from the firm's own — it is not insurance against loss.
NinjaTrader advertises intraday day-trading margins of USD 50 per Micro E-mini contract and USD 500 per E-mini contract. These are broker-set commercial rates that apply only during the session; positions held overnight revert to the full exchange initial margin requirement, which is many multiples higher. Trading at USD 50 margin on a contract with a much larger notional value means a small adverse move can wipe out the position and, in a gap, leave a debit balance. There is no negative balance protection.
Real-time top-of-book data is included once the account is funded. Market depth (Level 2), professional-status subscriptions and non-CME exchange feeds are billed separately, and NinjaTrader's pricing page notes that additional charges may apply based on market data selections and trade management. The account-level charge is published: a Minimum Account Activity Fee of USD 35 applies to free-plan accounts that log in but place no live trade within 30 days. Confirm which subscriptions will be billed to your account before funding.
The commission tier is tied to the platform licence, so in practice the platform and the brokerage are one decision. The desktop application is Windows-only; Mac users can use the web platform, which covers charting, order entry and position management but not the full add-on ecosystem. Free simulated trading runs on the full desktop toolset including Market Replay and the Strategy Analyzer, so you can test whether the platform suits you before funding anything.
