Our verdict
If you sell option premium, roll positions frequently or trade multi-leg spreads in size, tastytrade is close to the cheapest and by some distance the most purpose-fit retail broker in the US market. The USD 10-per-leg cap means a 50-lot iron condor costs the same to open as a 10-lot, and closing is free — a structural advantage no per-contract competitor matches. The desktop and mobile platforms surface exactly the numbers an options trader needs (IV rank, probability of profit, beta-weighted delta, curve analysis on a roll) without the clutter of a general-purpose brokerage. It is the wrong broker for almost everyone else. There are no mutual funds, no corporate bonds, no non-US exchanges and no multi-currency account, so European or Asian clients fund in USD and eat their own bank's conversion spread. Margin costs 11.00% on the first USD 25,000 of debit — well above the cheapest US brokers. Crypto at 1.00% per side is expensive versus a dedicated exchange. And FINRA censured and fined the firm USD 850,000 in 2026 over three years of inadequate best-execution reviews on payment-for-order-flow routing, which is exactly the kind of thing a cost-sensitive equity trader should weigh. Come for the options economics; do not expect a full-service investment account.
Best for
- Options premium sellers
- High-volume multi-leg traders
- Small-account futures traders
- Active US derivatives traders
Less suitable for
- Buy-and-hold fund investors
- Non-USD investors
- Bond and mutual fund buyers
- Traders needing non-US markets
Pros & cons
Pros
7- Equity options are USD 1 per contract to open, USD 0 to close and capped at USD 10 per leg — large multi-leg orders scale for free
- Futures at USD 1.00 per contract per side and micro futures at USD 0.75, with options on micro futures also USD 0.75
- No inactivity fee, no annual IRA maintenance fee and free ACH deposits and withdrawals
- Desktop, web and mobile all support full multi-leg order entry, rolling and curve analysis — the mobile app is not a stripped-down afterthought
- tastylive produces roughly eight hours of live options programming every trading day, plus a searchable research archive on strategy mechanics
- Stocks, ETFs and fractional shares trade commission-free, and Treasury bills carry no transaction fee
- Accepts clients from around 50 countries directly onto the US entity, including most of the EU, Switzerland, the UK and Singapore
Cons
6- FINRA censured and fined tastytrade USD 850,000 in 2026 for failing to run adequate best-execution reviews on equity orders routed to five payment-for-order-flow market makers between 2020 and 2023
- Margin interest starts at 11.00% on debits under USD 25,000 — materially more expensive than the cheapest US brokers
- USD-only accounts with no multi-currency balances, so non-US clients pay their own bank's FX spread on every deposit and withdrawal
- Product range stops at US-listed instruments: no foreign exchanges, no mutual funds, no corporate or municipal bonds, no spot forex
- Crypto costs 1.00% per side (0.75% for BTC and ETH) and is held at Zero Hash, outside SIPC protection
- Broad-based index options such as SPX are excluded from the USD 10 commission cap and carry an additional exchange proprietary index fee

Full review: tastytrade
Fees and what they cost in practice
tastytrade's pricing is asymmetric on purpose: you pay to open and nothing to close. Equity and ETF options are USD 1.00 per contract to open, USD 0.00 to close, capped at USD 10 per leg. Add USD 0.10 per contract in clearing and a USD 0.02 options regulatory fee and a ten-lot vertical spread costs roughly USD 22 to put on and about USD 2 to take off.
That cap is where the model bites. A 50-lot iron condor is four legs; each leg caps at USD 10, so the commission is USD 40 rather than the USD 200 a flat per-contract broker would charge. Closing is free. For anyone who rolls positions monthly this is a structural, repeatable saving.
Futures are USD 1.00 per contract per side, micro futures USD 0.75, options on futures USD 1.25 and options on micro futures USD 0.75, all plus USD 0.30 clearing and the relevant exchange and NFA fees.
Where it is not cheap:
- Margin interest runs 11.00% on debits below USD 25,000, sliding to 8.00% above USD 1m (base rate 10% as of 1 January 2025).
- Crypto costs 1.00% per side, 0.75% on BTC and ETH, with a USD 1.00 minimum commission.
- Broad-based index options are excluded from the USD 10 cap and carry an exchange proprietary index fee — USD 0.60 per contract on SPX, USD 0.25 on NDX.
Non-trading costs are genuinely light: no inactivity fee, no annual IRA fee, free ACH, USD 25 domestic wires, USD 45 international wires, USD 75 to transfer the account out, USD 5 per option exercise or assignment. All figures are from tastytrade's published commissions and fees schedule last updated 30 July 2026 and apply to tastytrade, Inc., the single US entity that serves domestic and international clients alike.
Safety and regulation
tastytrade, Inc. is a US broker-dealer registered with the SEC (SEC #8-69649), a member of FINRA (CRD #277027), the NFA and SIPC. There is no separate UK, EU or Australian entity — international clients are onboarded directly onto the US broker-dealer, which means US rules apply and EU protections such as PRIIPs KIDs or ESMA leverage caps do not.
The firm was formed in Delaware on 22 June 2015 and its SEC and FINRA registrations took effect on 10 March 2016; the retail brokerage went live in 2017.
Investor protection. Securities and cash are covered by SIPC up to USD 500,000, of which up to USD 250,000 may be cash. SIPC covers the failure of the broker, not losses on positions. Futures balances sit in CFTC-segregated accounts with no equivalent compensation scheme, and cryptocurrency held at Zero Hash is outside both.
Ownership. tastytrade was acquired by IG Group Holdings plc in 2021. tastytrade itself is not listed, but its parent is a FTSE-listed company (LSE: IGG) that publishes audited group accounts and is regulated by the FCA in the UK — a meaningful transparency signal, though not the same as the broker itself being publicly traded.
Disclosed regulatory action. In 2026 FINRA censured tastytrade and imposed an USD 850,000 fine for failing to conduct reasonable regular and rigorous best-execution reviews between January 2020 and January 2023. Over that period the firm routed all customer equity orders — more than 8.8 million orders covering over 1.7 billion shares — to five market makers that paid for order flow, without comparing execution quality against competing venues. tastytrade neither admitted nor denied the findings and has since revised its supervisory procedures. We record it because equity execution quality is exactly what a commission-free stock offering is selling.
We do not describe any broker as safe or guaranteed. These are the facts on record.
Trading platforms
The tastytrade desktop platform is the product the firm is actually known for, and it is built around a different question than most brokerages. Instead of asking where is the price going, the default views ask how much premium is on offer, and what is the probability this expires worthless. Implied volatility rank sits on the quote board next to the last price. The trade tab shows probability of profit and expected move before you send the order.
Standout tools:
- Curve analysis — plots the payoff of the position as it is and as it would be after a proposed roll, side by side, so adjustment decisions are visual rather than arithmetic.
- Beta-weighted portfolio delta — expresses the whole book as an equivalent SPY position, which is how most premium sellers actually think about risk.
- One-click rolling — select a position, choose the target expiry, and the platform builds the closing and opening legs as a single order.
- Follow Feed — mirrors trades placed by named tastylive personalities in real time. It is a transparency feature, not copy trading; nothing is executed automatically.
The web platform covers order entry, position management and rolling with near parity; charting is the part that is noticeably lighter. The mobile apps for iOS and Android are unusually complete — full multi-leg ticket, rolling, futures, biometric login — and are a credible primary platform rather than a monitoring tool.
What you do not get: no visual strategy builder for automated systems, no native backtester, and no equivalent of EasyLanguage or NinjaScript. tastytrade accounts can be traded from TradingView charts, and there is a documented REST and streaming API for anyone who wants to build their own tooling.
Markets and products
The menu is deliberately narrow and entirely US-listed:
- Stocks and ETFs — commission-free, including fractional shares at USD 0 commission and a USD 0.10 clearing fee per transaction. US exchanges only; there is no access to Frankfurt, London, Hong Kong or any other foreign market.
- Equity and index options — the core product, including weeklies and broad-based index options such as SPX, NDX, RUT, VIX and XSP.
- Futures — the full CME complex, including micro contracts, with USD 0.75 per side pricing that makes small-account futures trading viable.
- Options on futures, including options on micro futures at USD 0.75 per side.
- Cryptocurrency — spot BTC, ETH and a shortlist of majors, executed by Zero Hash Liquidity Services and custodied by Zero Hash LLC.
- Treasuries — bills at no transaction fee, notes and bonds at USD 25 to open or close.
- Event contracts — commission-free, with USD 0.02 in clearing and regulatory fees per contract.
What is missing matters. There are no mutual funds — a fund transferred in from another broker can only be liquidated, at USD 20 per fund. There are no corporate or municipal bonds, no spot forex and no CFDs. Every account is denominated in USD only, so an investor in Frankfurt or Zurich converts at their own bank and holds currency risk on the cash balance.
For a derivatives specialist this is a feature: the product list is exactly what an options book needs and nothing else. For anyone building a diversified long-term portfolio across currencies and asset classes, it is a hard constraint.
Account opening and funding
US applicants can generally complete the application and be approved the same day; identity is verified electronically and options approval levels are assigned during onboarding. International applicants — individual cash, individual margin and joint accounts only, no entities — typically take one to three business days because supporting identity and address documents are reviewed manually.
Eligibility is by country list, and the list moves. tastytrade currently onboards clients from roughly fifty jurisdictions including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the Nordics, Poland, Singapore and much of Latin America. Canada is not supported — Canadian residents can only join a waiting list — and neither are Japan or mainland China; tastytrade no longer opens accounts for Australian residents. Check the current eligible-countries list before you start.
Minimums. There is no minimum to open a cash account. A margin account needs USD 2,000 in equity under Regulation T before margin can be used, and portfolio margin requires USD 125,000 in net liquidating value.
Funding. ACH transfers are free in both directions and generally settle same day to next business day. Wires arrive same day; outgoing wires cost USD 25 domestic and USD 45 international. Cheques are accepted. tastytrade also accepts stablecoin deposits (USDC, USDT, PYUSD, RLUSD) provided crypto trading is enabled on the account. Withdrawals typically land in one to three business days.
The practical friction for a European client is currency, not paperwork: every balance is USD, so each deposit and withdrawal costs whatever your own bank charges to convert.
Research and education
tastytrade's educational output is unusual because it is not a marketing add-on — it is the origin of the business. tastylive, the affiliated media company that started in 2011, broadcasts roughly eight hours of live programming every trading day: market open commentary, strategy segments, live trade walk-throughs and quantitative research on things like the historical performance of selling 45-day 16-delta strangles. The archive is searchable and genuinely dense.
The editorial position is consistent and worth knowing before you sign up: trade small, trade often, sell premium in high implied-volatility environments, manage winners early. If you disagree with that thesis, a large share of the content will not be useful to you.
On the platform itself, research is derivatives-first:
- Implied volatility rank and percentile on every underlying
- Expected move and probability of profit on the order ticket
- Historical implied volatility charting
- Curated watchlists organised by liquidity and IV
- Earnings calendars tied to option chain views
What you will not find is conventional investment research. There are no analyst price targets, no third-party equity research PDFs, no discounted-cash-flow screeners, no fund ratings and only basic company fundamentals. A value investor researching a position will need to bring their own sources.
The paper-trading environment mirrors the live platform, which makes it a legitimate way to rehearse multi-leg mechanics before committing capital.
Customer support
Support is English-only, which is the single biggest service gap for the European and Latin American clients tastytrade now accepts. There is no German, French, Spanish or Italian desk, and account documents, tax forms and platform strings are all in English.
Channels are phone, email and live chat. General support runs on US business hours around the equity session rather than 24/7; a separate trade desk covers the futures session overnight, which matters because futures trade nearly around the clock and a stuck position at 03:00 Chicago time needs a human. Response quality is generally strong on derivatives mechanics — the staff are noticeably more fluent in assignment, exercise and margin questions than at a typical discount broker — and weaker on account administration, transfers and international documentation, where multi-day turnarounds are common.
Practical notes for non-US clients:
- Phone support is a US number, so calls from Europe run into cost and time-zone friction
- Live chat is the fastest route for platform and order questions
- International onboarding queries route to a dedicated accounts mailbox rather than the general queue
- There is no relationship manager tier, regardless of account size
Self-service is decent: the help centre is well-indexed, and most fee, margin and corporate-action questions can be answered without contacting anyone. For a broker that positions itself around trader education, the support experience is competent rather than exceptional.
Frequently asked questions
For multi-leg and larger-size orders, usually yes. The USD 1 per contract opening commission is mid-market on its own, but two features change the arithmetic: closing costs USD 0.00, and each leg is capped at USD 10. A 50-lot four-leg condor therefore costs USD 40 to open and nothing to close, where a straight USD 0.65-per-contract broker would charge about USD 130 each way. For a single one-lot trade a per-contract broker with lower headline pricing can be cheaper. Note that broad-based index options such as SPX are excluded from the cap.
Yes. tastytrade onboards clients from roughly fifty countries — including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the Nordics — directly onto its US broker-dealer entity. There is no EU or UK subsidiary, so you are a US brokerage client: SIPC applies instead of an EU investor compensation scheme, the account is USD-only, and EU-specific documents such as PRIIPs KIDs are not produced. Canada, Japan and Australia are not supported.
Securities and cash in the brokerage account are covered by SIPC up to USD 500,000, with a USD 250,000 sub-limit on cash. SIPC covers the failure of the broker, not losses on your positions. Futures balances are held in CFTC-segregated accounts but have no compensation scheme equivalent to SIPC. Cryptocurrency is custodied by Zero Hash LLC and is covered by neither. tastytrade's parent, IG Group Holdings plc, is listed in London and publishes audited group accounts.
No. There is no inactivity fee, no monthly platform fee and no annual IRA maintenance fee. Closing an IRA costs USD 60 and transferring the account out via ACAT costs USD 75. ACH deposits and withdrawals are free; wires cost USD 25 domestically and USD 45 internationally. Paper statements cost USD 5 each, so keep delivery electronic.
Margin interest starts at 11.00% per year on debit balances under USD 25,000 and steps down through 10.50%, 10.00%, 9.50%, 9.00% and 8.50% to 8.00% above USD 1m, based on a 10% base rate set on 1 January 2025. That is expensive relative to the cheapest US brokers, so tastytrade is a poor choice if your strategy depends on carrying a large margin loan rather than on defined-risk derivatives positions.
Only partially. Stocks, ETFs and fractional shares trade commission-free and Treasury bills carry no transaction fee, which covers a simple US-listed portfolio. But there are no mutual funds, no corporate or municipal bonds, no non-US exchanges and no multi-currency accounts, and the research tools are built for volatility rather than fundamentals. Investors outside the US also carry USD currency risk on the whole balance. It works as a satellite derivatives account, not as a core portfolio home.
